New details shed light on mystery over why NRL star Brandon Smith was questioned by police as soon as he flew to Queensland
Smith, 29, was interviewed by police at Coolangatta shortly after arriving on his flight from Sydney.
Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly said Smith was with teammates on Saturday evening at a Broadbeach hotel, but gave no details about what happened during the side's airport arrival.
Queensland Police released the following statement on the matter: 'Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport.
'The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide.'
Now News Corp and NRL 360 journalist Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield has shed some light on the incident.
'There's no suggestion of any wrongdoing or that Smith played up on the plane which, when police pull someone aside at an airport, that's normally the case,' Rothfield said on the Big Sports Breakfast radio show on Monday.
'Souths were filing off the plane heading to luggage and Queensland police took Smith aside and spoke to him for a considerable amount of time.
'Souths aren't telling us the reason why, his manager isn't telling us. What I'm told is that there was an issue that has happened in the last 12 months while Brandon Smith was in Queensland and police are looking into it.
'They have been trying to track Brandon for some time. When they couldn't get hold of him, they said they saw he was coming to the Gold Coast and they wanted to chat to him.
There's no suggestion of any wrongdoing by the popular star, who played against the Titans on Sunday afternoon.
In Australia, offences on aircraft fall under federal jurisdiction because air travel is regulated by Commonwealth laws.

Moment Ryanair flight chaos erupts ‘after brawl sparked by crying baby' – as ‘cops called & passengers stuck on tarmac'
THIS is the moment a Ryanair flight was plunged into chaos as a brawl broke out, understood to have been triggered by a crying baby. Police were called to the flight, travelling from London Stansted to Lisbon, shortly before 7pm yesterday evening. 4 4 Terrified children can be heard screaming and crying in the background while passengers stand in the aircraft's aisle. One mum is heard saying: "It's okay, we're going now," as she tries to comfort her child. Tempers are understood to have flared once the plane touched down in Lisbon. Local reports claim a fight broke out between two passengers, sparked by a crying baby. Police were then called to deal with the disturbance, keeping everyone onboard until officers arrived. It is understood that the baby had been crying earlier on in the flight, but tensions only erupted into chaos after the aircraft landed. A Ryanair spokesperson told The Sun: "The crew of this flight from London Stansted to Lisbon (12 Aug) called for police assistance after two passengers became disruptive onboard. "The aircraft was met by local police and these passengers were removed. "Ryanair has a strict zero tolerance policy towards passenger misconduct and will continue to take decisive action to combat unruly passenger behaviour, ensuring that all passengers and crew travel in a safe and respectful environment, without unnecessary disruption. "This is a matter for local police." Shocking moment Ryanair passenger sobs & hits door after being stopped from boarding as her 'hand luggage was too big' Last month, a female Ryanair passenger was left sobbing on her knees after being banned from boarding her flight. The tearful woman was left hitting a door in an emotional outburst as airport staff reportedly told her that her hand luggage was too big. Chaos unfolded at Sofia Airport in Bulgaria when the woman was left screaming, sobbing and venting her frustration over Ryanair 's strict baggage policy. A packed flight was due to board a bus to their plane when the female passenger was stopped in the queue. Nikolay Stefanov, a witness to the shocking ordeal, said the woman was told she had to pay for extra baggage because her luggage didn't fit in the holdall. The woman refused to pay as she explained her bag could in fact fit. A Ryanair spokesperson told The Sun: "This passenger booked a Basic Fare ticket for this flight from Sofia to Vienna which allowed them to carry a small personal bag onboard. "As this passenger's bag exceeded the permitted size, they were correctly required to pay a standard gate baggage fee however refused to do so and became aggressive towards gate staff. "As a result of their aggressive behaviour, the gate agent denied this passenger boarding for this flight from Sofia to Vienna." 4

George's stepfather Pete McGarry, who he starred alongside on Gogglebox, died at the age of 71 four years ago following a battle with bowel cancer.
