MCMC conducts 1,257 wireless broadband quality tests nationwide
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that of the total, 196 testing sessions were conducted in Sabah.
He said that based on monitoring and regulatory activities, this year, 135 notices under Subsection 51(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 have been issued to telecommunications companies.
'Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 46 penalties amounting to RM6.55 million in compounds were imposed for non-compliance with MSQoS,' he told reporters after attending a coverage testing session at the Tourism Centre in Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) here today.
Fahmi stressed that MCMC would continue its monitoring and regulatory efforts and would not hesitate to enforce the legal provisions in place to ensure that service providers comply with the current MSQoS coverage standards.
The Minister also noted that MCMC is working closely with mobile network operators to ensure continuous efforts by telecommunications companies to improve network quality and coverage.
'All service providers are urged to take public complaints seriously and act swiftly to resolve them,' he added.

Penang plans RM300mil tuna port in Bagan Ajam
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang government plans to build a new tuna and deep-sea fishing port in the state, which meets international standards, to increase tuna landings. State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said the government has identified an area in Bagan Ajam for the new tuna port and discussions are already underway. "The state has earmarked land in Bagan Ajam for the development of the new port, with an estimated development budget of RM150 million to RM300 million. "We are currently in talks with several investors for funding," he said. He added that, based on the timeline, the port could be completed within one-and-a-half to two years, pending technical approval from the District Land Office and other relevant agencies, as well as private sector allocation. "We hope the new port can revive the glory days of Penang's tuna industry, much like the 1990s," he told Bernama today. Fahmi highlighted several benefits of the new port, including its exclusive focus on tuna fishing, meaning tuna vessels will not have to compete for docking space with commercial ships. The port will also offer lower charges, as it will not operate on a commercial basis. Regarding competition, he said that tuna ships would not need to compete for docking space because the new port would be dedicated solely to tuna landings. It is expected to attract foreign tuna ships due to its user-friendly facilities. The new port will meet European Union (EU) standards and will include special facilities tailored specifically for tuna fishing, unlike existing ports, which offer general facilities and lack focus on tuna landings. "According to preliminary data from the Malaysian Fisheries Department, the total tuna landings in Penang last year were 431,000kg, valued at RM7.758 million. "The main landing point is currently the Butterworth deep-water wharf," Fahmi said. He also noted that Malaysian vessels had landed tuna in Mauritius last year, with a total of 4,295,758kg of tuna, including 3,749,478kg from local vessels. So far this year, the total tuna landings in Penang, including foreign vessels, have reached 1,445,120 kg, with an estimated value of RM26 million. Fahmi believes that with the dedicated tuna port in Bagan Ajam, tuna landings could increase by 30 to 50 per cent within five years of its operation. He also envisions Penang becoming a tuna processing hub, where foreign vessels can land their catch for processing before exporting it to Taiwan or Japan.– BERNAMA

RM90mil Madani grant helps nearly 39,000 SMEs go digital
JOHOR BARU: Some 38,804 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) nationwide embraced digitalisation last year under the Geran Digital PMKS Madani (GDPM) scheme, with approved funding worth RM89.6 million. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said 2,838 recipients were private clinics and pharmacies, marking about 19 per cent of the sector operating in premises across the country, based on Malaysian Medical Association data. "This shows the effectiveness of the GDPM in helping SMEs digitise services. This year, we are focusing on the health sector, targeting at least 50 per cent of private clinics and pharmacies," she said after launching the Johor leg of GDPM Fest 2025 in Permas Jaya today. The government has approved an additional RM50 million for the programme this year, with RM30 million channelled to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) via telecommunications companies to strengthen SME digital adoption, particularly in healthcare. The Geran Digital PMKS Madani, or the Madani Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Digital Grant, is a government initiative to help SMEs digitise their businesses. The grant offers matching funds of up to 50 per cent, or a maximum of RM5,000, for eligible businesses to subscribe to digital services. Its aim is to enhance SME efficiency and competitiveness through the use of digital technology. The effort reflects the government's continued commitment to implementing digitalisation initiatives, a core pillar of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Teo said digital health records would allow patients to access services across clinics without repeating paperwork, complementing but not replacing MySejahtera.
