Who is new Penn State Recruit Adam McCann-Gibbs?

USA Today16-07-2025
Kicking is certainly not the sexiest position when it comes to recruiting. After all, it's not necessarily going to garner the most headlines, especially if you're a blue-blood program such as Penn State. Especially if you're struggling to make headway in a certain recruiting cycle to boot. However, a unique unicorn of a kicker has recently committed to the Nittany Lions..and brings along with him a unique story.
Adam McCann-Gibbs is not just unique because of his diverse origins. He is unique because he is already so well-rounded at a position that seems so simplistic. Not only is he the 22nd-ranked pure kicker in his class, but the 36th-ranked punter as well. It somehow makes you forget of the whole other side to his cult status completely.
You see, McCann-Gibbs isn't even in high school. At just 17 years old, no college scouts have even really seen him in game action. But that's not it. McCann-Gibbs does not even have the advantage of growing up in the US either. He was born in Northern Ireland, a country more well-known for rugby than anything else. Despite this minor setback, McCann-Gibbs has set himself apart from the pack through rigorous training and commitment to his craft.
Through Leader Kicking, a program set up through former rugby player Tadgh Leader, McCann-Gibbs has been able to showcase his skillset to a broader audience. For example, here is a clip of Gibbs booting over 70-yard punts at Leader's camp, proving his one-of-one talents.
Gibbs is certainly walking into a competitive environment in the Penn State kicking room. Ryan Barker, a sophomore with two more years of eligibility left, has the upper hand right now, having won the job last year. Freshman walk-on Matthew Parker is set to join the squad this fall. Gibbs may have more luck as a punter, as both Riley Thompson and Gabe Nwosu will be out of eligibility by the time he steps foot on campus.
Overall, the future is bright for young Gibbs. Don't be surprised that once he is a Nittany Lion, his intriguing skill set is put to good use.

Dylan Raiola likens relationship with Patrick Mahomes to Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan

Before he ever took a snap at the college level, the comparisons were unavoidable for Dylan Raiola. Between his position, No. 15 jersey number, his hair and, at times, his playing style, the Nebraska quarterback has been frequently linked to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. It's not a connection that Raiola shies away from. If anything, he embraces it — so much so that he has a historical comparison for it. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten college football power rankings start with Penn State, Ohio State In an interview with the Cover 3 Podcast on July 22 at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, Raiola likened the way he views and tries to emulate Mahomes to Kobe Bryant's relationship with Michael Jordan. 'I'm not comparing myself to Kobe or anything, but like Kobe did to Mike, that's kind of what it is for me to Patrick,' Raiola said. 'He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now, if not the best. Just for me to be able to have someone to look up to, talk, call, whatever…the comparisons are kind of everything outside. I can't control that god made me look like this, play the same sport. It's all love.' Nebraska's Dylan Raiola On his relationship with Patrick Mahomes:"What Kobe did to Mike, That's kind of what it is for me to Patrick" #BigTenMediaDays #Nebraska #dylanraiola Over the course of his legendary NBA career, Bryant became perhaps the closest thing the sport had seen to Jordan since his retirement, emulating his game, mannerisms, trademark intensity and even hairstyle, trading in his baby afro for a shaved head. One year into his college career, Raiola has taken the same kind of approach with Mahomes, opting for a similar haircut and wearing a headband during games. Before a win last season against Colorado, Raiola generated widespread attention on social media for mimicking Mahomes' pregame routine. Raiola trains with quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen and trainer Bobby Stroupe, both of whom worked with Mahomes on his rise to NFL stardom. The comparison, of course, has its limits. Beyond their follicle choices, the two don't look all that much alike (Mahomes is mixed, with a white mother and Black father, while Raiola is of Polynesian descent). More glaringly, one of the quarterbacks is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL MVP while the other is a 20 year old who threw 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions for a team that went 3-6 in the Big Ten last season. The tie between the two is more than superficial, though. Mahomes and Raiola have struck up a relationship, with Raiola noting the two call and text one another. Last year, Mahomes shouted out Raiola on social media, referring to him as 'Lil cuzzo.' In about a month, there will be one more data point between the two — Raiola and Nebraska will open their 2025 season at Arrowhead Stadium against Cincinnati on August 28.

Where does James Franklin rank in 2025 Big Ten coach rankings?

The pressure is on like never before for Penn State head coach James Franklin heading into the 2025 season. With raised expectations for the Penn State program and strong preseason power rankings placed upon them, the Nittany Lions are roaring into the new college football season believed to be a strong Big Ten and national title contender. But where does Franklin rank among his peers in the conference? CBS Sports released its annual Big Ten coach power rankings this week as the Big Ten football media days got underway this week. Not surprisingly, Franklin was among the top-ranked coaches in the Big Ten but did not land the top spot in this year's rankings. Franklin ranked third on the list from CBS Sports behind Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and Oregon head coach Dan Lanning. That would seem to be a fair assessment given Day is coming off his first national championship with the Buckeyes and Lanning guided Oregon to a Big Ten championship, at the expense of Franklin and Penn State, and a no. 1 seed going into the College Football Playoff last season. Penn State's head coach moved up one spot in the Big Ten coach rankings from CBS Sports this year. Franklin swapped places on the ranking with USC head coach Lincoln Riley. The biggest move in the Big Ten coach rankings came from Indiana's Curt Cignetti, who jumped up to no. 6 from no. 14 following a brilliant debut season in Bloomington with the Hoosiers. Luke Fickell of Wisconsin tumbled from no. 5 in the Big Ten to no. 11 after a rough 2024 season. Michigan State's Jonathan Smith took a similar fall from no. 7 down to no. 13. The spotlight is on Franklin this season, more so than ever before. The expectations are higher than ever. Will this be a year where Franklin breaks from the narrative of coming up short in the biggest of moments when the lights are the brightest? That remains to be seen, and soon enough we will begin witnessing the results for better or worse. You can check out the Big Ten coach rankings from CBS Sports to see how everyone compares.
