India to outpace global peers as growth slows worldwide: Kotak Report

Time of India08-05-2025

Global economic growth is set to slow in the coming months, with major economies such as the United States and China projected to experience notable deceleration. However, India is expected to outpace global peers amid this global downturn, according to a recent report by Kotak Alternate Asset Managers.
The report forecasts a 90 basis point slowdown in the US economy and a 60 basis point decline for China, while highlighting that India is expected to maintain its position as the fastest-growing major economy.
A key factor supporting India's economic resilience is its strong manufacturing performance, with the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) figures continuing to indicate positive momentum—setting India apart from many global counterparts.

Despite mixed signals from high-frequency indicators, India's overall macroeconomic outlook remains robust. Although credit growth and government expenditure have shown some moderation, the report points to other encouraging trends that continue to support economic activity.
Among them is a favourable monsoon forecast, which is expected to lift rural demand and improve the inflation outlook, providing a timely boost to the agricultural sector.

Indian equity markets have also displayed significant resilience, despite softer-than-expected Q4 FY25 earnings and rising geopolitical tensions with Pakistan. The report notes that markets have rebounded sharply from recent lows.
Investor sentiment remains buoyant, with Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) continuing as net buyers and Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) returning to net buying positions for the second consecutive month.
A declining risk premium on Indian assets has contributed to expanding equity valuations.
Still, the report cautions that volatility may persist in the near term due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
The Indian rupee (INR) has also gained strength against the US dollar, backed by a combination of factors such as a weaker dollar, renewed FPI inflows, and falling oil prices—all of which have improved India's trade balance.
However, the upside in the rupee has been partly capped by the Reserve Bank of India, which used the currency's strength as an opportunity to build foreign exchange reserves. These reserves have surged by USD 50 billion, reaching USD 688 billion in just two months.
Looking ahead, the narrowing yield gap between Indian and US 10-year bonds, along with sustained dollar weakness, is expected to keep the rupees relatively strong in the short term

Diversification, policy reforms aid Odisha's industrial progress: CM

1 2 3 4 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the BJP govt's one-year anniversary, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday said that Odisha is becoming a "diversified industrial powerhouse" and a top investment destination in the country by not just approving investments worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore but also successfully grounding projects worth Rs 1.78 lakh crore. "Odisha is no longer just a minerals and metals hub. We are becoming a diversified industrial powerhouse, where opportunity flows from port to plant, and from cities to every aspirational district," the CM said during a meeting with leading industrialists and entrepreneurs in the city. "We are not merely sanctioning projects; we are grounding them. We are not making promises; we are delivering results — at scale, with speed, and with purpose," Majhi said. Mapping the industrial growth story, he said, "In just one year, we approved over 200 large and mega projects. Odisha now stands for credibility, competitiveness and commitment to progress." The CM said industries are diversifying from minerals and metals to green energy, agro-processing, technical textiles and shipbuilding, with investments flowing into 20 sectors. He attributed the success to proactive policy push like outcome-based governance and a "whole-of-govt model" that emphasises seamless coordination between departments and agencies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Roadshows in Delhi, Mumbai and Singapore have pitched Odisha as a hub for chemical, electronics, capital goods and advanced manufacturing, while two major events, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Utkarsh Odisha — Make in Odisha Conclave-2025, attracted global attention and industrial giants expanding the state's economic footprint, Majhi said. Majhi also spoke about the ambitious vision for 'Samruddha Odisha' by 2036, aligning with the centenary celebration of formation of the state. He outlined four key priorities in the upcoming year, including the launch of new policies targeting emerging and sunrise sectors, expansion of land banks, logistics corridors and critical infrastructure. He emphasised revamping the single-window system with digital-first project tracking and simplification of regulatory compliances to speed up approvals and encourage entrepreneurship. To support industrial labour, the state is developing 13 workers' hostels and modernising seven industrial estates with plug-and-play infrastructure. Furthermore, 30 MSME parks and 8 new industrial areas have been initiated to empower small enterprises and entrepreneurs. Industries minister Sampad Chandra Swain, MSME minister Gokulananda Mallik, development commissioner Anu Garg, and senior officers, among others, attended the event.

HP agri varsity staff to CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu: Withdraw state govt's plea against HC stay on land transfer

Kullu: The teachers' association of Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, has urged chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to withdraw a special leave petition (SLP) which the state govt recently filed in the Supreme Court. The petition challenges a stay order by the Himachal Pradesh high court on the transfer of 112 hectares of university land to the tourism department. In a letter to the CM, the Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University Teachers' Association (HPAUTA), which has been opposing the land transfer for a proposed tourism village, said this state govt project would jeopardise agricultural education and research in a premium agricultural university. According to the association, govt should withdraw the SLP so that the university's academic, research, and extension work was not affected adversely. Prof Janardan Singh, the secretary of HPAUTA, told TOI that the university land was meant solely for academic and research purposes, not commercial. "The land transfer would not only halt major ongoing research projects, including those funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), but also hinder the university's future expansion as no land would be left for new colleges, departments, or student facilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Address of Pride – Signature Global SPR Signature Global Book Now Undo The proposed village would weaken the academic mission of the university," said Prof Singh. He said state govt's move to approach the SC also raised several questions about its intent. "Why is the govt in such a hurry to establish a tourism village on the university campus when several hectares of land under various departments of the Himachal Pradesh govt lie unused? The state govt is unnecessarily putting the future of a premium institute of learning at risk," added Prof Singh. Despite protests and stiff opposition from teachers and students, the state govt last year transferred 112 hectares of university land to the tourism department for developing a tourism village. Challenging the state govt's land transfer, HPAUTA approached the Himachal Pradesh high court, which put a stay on the land transfer in August last year. Challenging the stay, state govt filed an SLP in the SC in March this year. Established in 1978, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, in Kangra district was renamed Chaudhary Sarvan Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University in 2001. The university was awarded 14th rank among the Indian agriculture universities by ICAR in 2019. So far, the university has released 179 improved varieties of different crops for different regions of the state and is the first in the country to establish an advanced centre on nature farming. There are four constituent colleges of the university which impart education to over 2000 students from eight countries and 15 Indian states. If the transfer of the 112 hectares goes through, the university will be left with 277 hectares of land in its Palampur campus. According to teachers, the university will require more land for expansion in near future. "The university land has been squeezed whereas it needs to be expanded and new programmes are required to be started as per the new education policy. There is an urgent need to establish new colleges including the college of agricultural engineering, fisheries, agricultural business management, environmental sciences and more. Instead of providing more land to the university, the state govt is taking away whatever little it has got," said a university teacher, who didn't want to be named. The state govt announced in Nov 2023 to set up a tourism village in Kangra district to promote "local art and culture and to create employment opportunities for the youth".
