Thyssenkrupp and trade union IG Metall on Saturday said they had agreed on reduced working hours, lower bonus payments and site closures as part of a push to revamp Germany's largest steelmaker. The accord with steel workers marks a major step in Thyssenkrupp's restructuring, under which the former German industrial icon is planning to turn into a holding company, and comes after renewed tension between management and labour representatives.Implementation of the new collective bargaining agreement , which runs until September 30, 2030, must be approved by IG Metall members at Thyssenkrupp's steel unit TKSE and is pending an agreement on the division's future financing, they said. The agreement follows Thyssenkrupp's announcement that up to 11,000 jobs at the steel unit, TKSE, had to be cut or outsourced and that annual production capacity would be lowered to 8.7-9.0 million tons from 11.5 million tons."We went to the pain threshold and only made concessions where it was really necessary in order to secure jobs and locations," said Tekin Nasikkol, head of Thyssenkrupp's works council and member of the group's supervisory board."We have now created the conditions for the company to emerge from the difficult situation out of its own strength," Nasikkol said in a statement.Thyssenkrupp had wanted to reach a deal regarding the restructuring by summer and both sides aim to finalise the current agreement by the end of September.Reaching a wage deal has been seen as a key hurdle to be cleared before Thyssenkrupp can sell an additional 30 per cent stake in TKSE to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky , as planned. The investor already owns a 20 per cent stake via a holding company.

EU Readies €100 Billion No-Deal Plan to Match US 30% Tariff

The European Union plans to quickly hit the US with 30% tariffs on some €100 billion worth of goods in the event of no deal and if US President Donald Trump carries through with his threat to impose that rate on most of the bloc's exports after Aug. 1. As a part of a first wave of countermeasures, the EU would combine an already approved list of tariffs on €21 billion of US goods and a previously proposed list on an additional €72 billion of American products into one package, an European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday. The US exports, which include industrial goods such as Boeing Co. aircraft, US-made cars and bourbon whiskey, would face a levy that matches Trump's 30% threat, according to people familiar with the matter. The tariffs would be prepared to come into force next month but only if there is no deal and the US implements its levies after the August deadline, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. The plans come as EU member states, including Germany, have hardened their positions in response to the US stiffening its negotiating stance. Berlin would be willing to even support the activation of the EU's anti-coercion instrument, or ACI, in a no-deal scenario, a government official said on condition of anonymity. This tool would come into play only if a deal fails to materialize. Explainer: All About the EU's Trade Weapon of Last Resort The ACI is the bloc's most potent trade tool and a growing number of member states is pushing for its use if a deal isn't reached. The instrument is primarily designed as a deterrent and is currently not on the table, with its activation requiring a qualified majority of member states to support the move. The ACI would enable the EU to launch a broad range of retaliatory actions, including new taxes on US tech giants, targeted curbs on US investments, and limiting access to the EU market. 'We are now approaching the decisive phase in the tariff dispute with the USA. We need a fair, reliable agreement with low tariffs,' German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday after a meeting with his Czech counterpart Petr Fiala. 'Without such an agreement, we risk economic uncertainty at a time when we actually need exactly the opposite.' Still, the overwhelming preference is to keep negotiations with Washington on track in a bid for an outcome to the impasse ahead of next month's deadline. Tesla Finally Lands in India: Is It Too Late?

Back in 2016, Tesla began taking preorders from Indian customers with no timeline for delivery. Now, nine years later, it's officially arrived — but much has changed. The Indian EV space is more competitive, homegrown players like Tata and global brands like BYD have made inroads and import duties remain steep. And in the premium segment that Tesla is targeting, it's not the first mover. German brands like Mercedes, BMW and Audi have been here for years. What took Tesla so long? Why did early adopters like Vishal Gondal cancel their bookings? And is India ready — in terms of infrastructure, pricing and policy — for what Tesla offers? Guest: Vishal Gondal, tech entrepreneur and early Tesla hopeful Host: Anupama Chandrasekaran Produced and edited by Sharmada Venkatasubramanian Listen to more In Focus podcasts:

How Rs 1 Crore Becomes Rs 10 Crore: The Compound Interest Hack Most People Ignore

Last Updated: Compound interest accelerates as your investment grows, turning small sums into serious wealth. The bigger the corpus, the faster the financial growth The true magic of compound interest lies in its reliance on time. The longer your money remains invested, the more powerful the compounding effect becomes. In the early years, returns might appear modest, causing impatience or doubt among new investors. However, as the corpus grows, the returns start to snowball, yielding dramatic growth with each passing year. Why Early Investment Matters Most The key to unlocking the full potential of compound interest is starting early and staying invested. A delay of just a few years in beginning your investment journey can significantly affect your long-term gains. For example, someone who starts investing at 25 will likely have a far larger corpus by age 60 than someone who begins at 35, even if the latter invests a larger amount. This is because compounding rewards time in the market, not timing the market. The earlier you invest, the more time your money has to multiply exponentially. The Snowball Effect In Action Even though the rate of return remains the same (12%), the growth accelerates because the base amount is much larger. This is the essence of compounding; your money works harder as it grows. The Biggest Mistake: Withdrawing Too Soon One of the most common mistakes investors make is withdrawing their money too early. Frustrated by slow initial growth, they miss out on the high-speed gains that come later. Compounding is not a short-term strategy, it's a long-term wealth-building tool. Discipline and patience are crucial to harness its full potential. Interest On Interest: The True Multiplier German physicist Albert Einstein admired compounding because it's one of the few financial principles where you earn interest not just on your capital, but also on the interest already earned. It's a cycle that builds momentum year after year. For instance: Rs 1 lakh grows to Rs 1.12 lakh in the first year, then Rs 1.254 lakh in the second, and around Rs 1.404 lakh in the third year, steadily increasing as you earn interest on both the principal and the accumulated interest, all without changing the annual return. Make Compounding Work For You Compounding rewards consistency, time, and patience. It turns modest investments into substantial wealth, but only for those who stay the course. Whether through mutual funds, SIPs, or other long-term financial instruments, allowing your money to compound uninterrupted can be the smartest financial decision you ever make. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
