First Time Ever! Italy Qualify For ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026
The Italy men's cricket team will play in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The Italian side qualified for their first-ever Cricket World Cup on Friday (July 11). Italy, despite losing their last ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 match against the Netherlands by 9 wickets at The Hague on Friday, managed to finish in the top two, and as a result, they will travel to India next year to take part in the 2026 edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
The 2026 edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup will be played across multiple venues in India and Sri Lanka in February and March next year.
In the 2024 edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, which was played in the West Indies and USA, three teams—Uganda, Canada, and the United States of America—made their maiden appearance, and the Americans even managed to qualify for the Super 8s.
The Italian team, after a memorable show in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025, where they stunned Scotland by 12 runs on July 9, would like to do well in the shortest format mega-event next year.
Italy and the Netherlands' qualification for the T20 World Cup 2026 on Friday also resulted in a heartbreak for Jersey. The Jersey men's cricket team also finished the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 with 5 points from four matches, but they finished third behind Italy due to a poor Net Run Rate (NRR).
ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025
Had Italy managed to get the better of the Netherlands in the last match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague on Friday, Jersey would have finished second in the points table and qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026.
15 teams done!
A total of 15 teams—India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, West Indies, USA, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Netherlands, and Italy—have qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026, and five more teams—two from the Africa Qualifier, which will be played from September 19 to October 4 in Zimbabwe, and three from the Asia–EAP Regional Final—will book their berth.

The Polish-Norwegian pair responded in the second, rallying from 4-5 down to take three straight games and force a match tiebreak. But the Italians were relentless, racing to a 4-0 lead in the decider and holding on for victory under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium . The final, however, reverted to traditional sets, capped by a deciding 10-point tiebreak. Swiatek praised her opponents afterward, joking that 'mixed doubles players are smarter tactically than singles players', while Errani dedicated the win to doubles specialists who were excluded from the event. Vavassori said the pair had been on a 'mission' to prove the value of doubles, both relishing the electric atmosphere of the packed stadium as they lifted the trophy once again.

Womens Golf: Pranavi, Tvesa lead bunch of seven Indians in Sweden
Agency: Gothenburg (Sweden), Aug 21 (PTI) The trio of Pranavi Urs, Tvesa Malik and Vani Kapoor headline a large contingent of Indians at the Euro 300,000 Hills Open golf tournament here. A total of seven Indians will tee up this week with the others being rookie Avani Prashanth, Amandeep Drall, Sneha Singh and Hitaashee Bakshi. India's top star, Diksha Dagar, has decided to skip the week and take rest ahead of the busy second half which includes the Hero women's Indian Open. While Diksha was racking up a number of top-10 finishes, the other Indian players have been trying to find the momentum in the middle part of this season. As Pranavi makes a comeback from a wrist injury, Avani is consolidating her position in the first season and Vani Kapoor and Amandeep are trying to find a regular place on the LET (Ladies European Tour). Sneha and Hitaashee have been big forces on their home tour, the Women's Pro Golf Tour, but have yet to find their feet on the LET. England's Mimi Rhodes continues to impress in her rookie season as she still leads the Order of Merit (OOM) standings on 1,821.74 points having played 14 tournaments in the 2025 season schedule. The 23-year-old will be in action again this week at the Hills Open, with Czech Republic's Sara Kouskova also in the field. The three-time LET winner has enjoyed a strong month, making her debut at the AIG Women's Open with a T19 finish, while also securing T4 in the individual event and T23 in the team competition at the PIF London Championship. US Open: Errani-Vavassori Defend Mixed Title With Win Over Swiatek-Ruud
The Italian duo of Sara Errani, Andrea Vavassori posted a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 win over the Polish-Norwegian pairing of Iga Swiatek, Casper Ruud in the final of the event on Thursday. Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained their US Open mixed doubles with their win over Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud on Thursday to clinch the top prize in the revamped edition of the event. The Italian duo of Errani and Vavassori posted a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 victory over the Polish-Norwegian Swiatek and Ruud to claim the $1m prize money on offer. 'I think this one is also for all the doubles players that couldn't play this tournament," Errani said following the title-win alongside compatriot Vavassori. 'I think this one is also for them," she added. 'It's the court where I feel goosebumps every time here," Errani said. 'I have to say that we showed today that doubles is a great product," Vavassori added. 'I think it was amazing to play on this court with so many people and I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere," he stated. 'Congratulations. You proved that, I guess, mixed doubles players are smarter tactically than singles players," the Pole said. 'But we pushed until the end. We tried to make it competitive," she added. Poland's Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion ranked second in the world, endured a two-hour struggle against Jasmine Paolini to clinch the Cincinnati Open on Monday. She then swiftly traveled to New York to join forces with Norway's Ruud in the newly formatted competition. Carlos Alcaraz, the men's champion in Cincinnati, also participated, but he and his British partner Emma Raducanu were eliminated on Tuesday, along with superstar Novak Djokovic and his Serbian partner Olga Danilovic. The star names attracted large crowds, but the synergy between Italians Errani and Vavassori, honed over a two-year on-court partnership that included winning the French Open title this year, proved decisive. Errani hoped it demonstrated that dedicated doubles teams, many of whom were excluded from the field, have significant value. Errani and Vavassori surged to a 4-1 lead in the opening set of the championship match. Although Swiatek and Ruud managed to break back once, Vavassori confidently held serve to close the set. Down a break at 4-5 in the second set, Swiatek and Ruud won three consecutive games to force a 10-point match tiebreaker. The Italians secured a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and maintained their advantage. The initial three rounds, including the semi-finals on Wednesday night, featured short sets with no-ad scoring and a 10-point match tiebreak instead of a third set. The final reverted to traditional sets with a 10-point match tiebreak. Swiatek and Ruud clawed their way past top seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper with a 3-5, 5-3, 10-8 semi-final victory, winning the last six points to advance. Errani and Vavassori breezed past the American duo Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison 4-2, 4-2 to reach the final. Vavassori admitted that he and Errani were on a 'mission" to prove themselves against the singles stars, but both enjoyed the electric atmosphere under the lights at the packed Arthur Ashe Stadium Court.
