Metta Sandiford-Artest on giving up money to play for the Lakers
In 2009, after a seven-year drought, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship by defeating the Orlando Magic in five games in the final round of the playoffs. Immediately, their quest for back-to-back titles began, especially since they hadn't gotten revenge on the Boston Celtics after the Celtics embarrassed them in the 2008 NBA Finals.
Their first task was to retain forwards Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza, both of whom were integral parts of their team. Even though the Miami Heat made a big push to sign Odom, he eventually agreed to a new deal to stay put. But Ariza was a different story. He opted to leave and join the Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles replaced him with Metta Sandiford-Artest, then known as Ron Artest.
At the time, Sandiford-Artest had a reputation for being a hoodlum, especially after his role in the infamous "Malice at the Palace" in 2004. But he was on his best behavior as a Laker during the 2009-10 season, and he embraced a greatly reduced offensive role while helping Kobe Bryant and crew win it all over Boston.
He agreed to a contract that paid him $5.85 million that season after he had made at least $7.4 million in each of the previous three seasons. In fact, his salary for the 2009-10 campaign was lower than his salary in each of his prior five seasons.
During an interview with entrepreneur and podcaster Patrick Bet-David, he said he gave up plenty of money to win a ring in L.A., and he was even reluctant to come on board.
"I did not expect that call at 12:01 (the start of NBA free agency). ... I get a call, we pull over, and then my agent, David Bauman, says, 'The Lakers want to speak to you.' Pardon my French, but my first reaction was, 'For [expletive] what?' 'Cause I'm like, 'They just beat us.'
"... I meet with Dr. [Jerry] Buss the next morning and he was like, 'I'm sorry, I'm not going to be able to pay you what your worth, but we really want you on this team.'
"... And I said, 'Damn! Dr. Buss, Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant.' I love Kobe.
"... I left a lot of money on the table."
Sandiford-Artest saw a big drop in his offensive production. He went from averaging 17.1 points a game during the 2008-09 season to putting up 11.0 points a game the following year, and his 3-point accuracy even fell from 39.9% to 35.5%. To that point in his basketball life, he had always been one of the top offensive options on every team he had ever played on, but with L.A., he was merely a role player.
But he said it was all worth it, partly because he learned a lot about himself, and he learned that he could overcome adversity. In the process of winning the 2010 NBA title, he reversed his public image and suddenly became likable, and he ended up doing plenty of community-oriented work, especially in the area of mental health.

The Athletic NBA Daily's 2025 NBA Draft preview

The 2025 NBA Draft kicks off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on June 25. The Dallas Mavericks hold the No. 1 overall pick after winning the lottery and are set to draft Cooper Flagg. Dylan Harper, the six-foot-five guard from Rutgers, is projected to go No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs. But after that, the draft becomes much harder to predict. Advertisement On the latest episode of 'The Athletic NBA Daily', Andrew Schlecht and Alex Speers were joined by The Athletic's Sam Vecenie to preview how the event might unfold. Watch the full episode below. They discussed how the top prospects from last year's class would rank among this year's current crop; the impact that name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights have had on the draft and particularly the depth into the second round; and how NIL has incentivized more international players to pursue the college route. Andrew, Alex and Sam also explored whether teams might look to trade away second-round picks due to the shallower pool of talent, which teams could be the most aggressive in trading up for V.J. Edgecombe or Ace Bailey, whether Edgecombe, Bailey, Kon Knueppel, or Tre Johnson have star potential, and also looked at the chances of the Spurs moving the No. 2 overall pick. Later in the show, the trio broke down how Sam's draft philosophy has evolved over the years, analyzed Jeremiah Fears' game and looked at the most polarizing players in this year's draft, compared Khaman Maluach to other recent seven-foot lottery picks with offensive question marks and looked at how Carter Bryant's game might translate to the NBA level. Former NBA Player Urges Grizzlies to Trade Ja Morant

Former NBA Player Urges Grizzlies to Trade Ja Morant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday pulled off a trade that surprised the NBA. As the NBA Finals continued, the young Orlando Magic cracked open its championship window by acquiring guard Desmond Bane from the Grizzlies, in exchange for Cole Anthony, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, four unprotected first-round picks and one pick swap. Advertisement The Bane trade signals that the Grizzlies are going in a different direction for the 2025-26 seasons. Following the in-season dismissal of longtime head coach Taylor Jenkins, Memphis reached the playoffs with a 48-34 record -- only to suffer a four-game sweep at the hands of the eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder appear poised for long-term success in the West, while the Houston Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs could soon enter title windows themselves. Against this backdrop, ESPN's Jay Williams believes the time is now for Memphis to deal Ja Morant, its controversial franchise point guard. "I saw Desmond Bane get traded for five first-round picks," the former NBA point guard Williams said Monday on "Get Up." "I wonder what the value for Ja Morant could be." Advertisement After a shoulder injury and a 25-game suspension limited him to nine games during the 2023-24 season, Morant guided the Grizzlies back to the playoffs this season while averaging 23.2 points and 7.3 assists per game. However, Morant played just 50 regular-season games; over the past three seasons, he has missed 126 of a possible 246 games. "The best way to build a culture is not based upon unpredictability," Williams said of Morant's frequent absences. Williams further cited Morant's lack of maturity -- including his incidents with firearms -- as a reason why the Grizzlies could opt to move Morant as he enters the final two years of his contract. And using the Bane return as a barometer, the Grizzlies could effectively reset their franchise by moving the two-time All-Star Morant. "I think his value is still high," Williams said. "He is box office. I think there are franchises out there that would give up a boatload of assets for Ja Morant." Knicks Guard Makes Big Personal Announcement During Offseason

Knicks Guard Makes Big Personal Announcement During Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks are going to be under a microscope all offseason long after firing Tom Thibodeau, who was the head coach of the team for five seasons. Advertisement Most recently, Thibodeau led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years. With Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns leading the way on the hardwood, Thibodeau had New York just two wins away from the NBA Finals. Still, the Knicks believe they need another head coach to help them achieve their first NBA title since 1973. While the club goes through an extensive head coaching search, the rest of the team will wait to see how the squad shakes out. One player whose role seems safe, though, is Miles McBride. The backup guard provided valuable playoff minutes for the Knicks this season. While there was plenty to be impressed with as it pertains to his on-court play, he recently made a major off-court announcement. Advertisement McBride and Ana Zortea shared on Instagram late on Sunday night that they welcomed their baby girl into the world. "God is great," McBride shared on Instagram. "I love you babygirl" This past season, McBride emerged as a real rotational piece for the Knicks, averaging 9.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game while playing 24.9 minutes per contest. Not only was the West Virginia product a strong contributor as a shooter this past season, but he was also the Knicks' strongest point of attack defender. With a new head coach set to come in and lead the franchise, the bench is about to get much more valuable -- as Thibodeau didn't use his bench too, too much. A new head coach will value rotations much more, especially during the regular season. Advertisement McBride and his girlfriend Ana will navigate next season and the next chapter of their life with a newborn baby, too.
