The Hunting Wives is one of the sexiest shows of the year, and it's premiering on Netflix! It's a twisted, seductive, and hedonistic romp on the dark side that supports the old saying about good girls going to heaven and bad girls going everywhere.
The story centers around a group of gun-toting socialites in a small Texas town, and one thing is certain: These wives aren't at home baking pies. They're out preying on anyone who gets in their way, even if it's someone in their frenemy group known as The Hunting Wives . These ladies who lunch have a lot of sex, get into a lot of trouble, and even get entangled in murder.
The highly anticipated, seductive drama from Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment was originally set to air on Starz. Luckily, for Netflix subscribers in the U.S., all eight episodes will premiere exclusively on Monday, July 21.
The story, based on May Cobb's bestselling novel of the same name, is set in the small town of Maple Brook in East Texas. Showrunner, writer, and executive producer Rebecca Cutter ( Hightown ) took Cobb's book and adapted it for television.
'When I first read the novel, I was in awe of its flagrant horniness and glorification of bad behavior,' said Cutter in a letter to the press of her initial reaction to the world Cobb created. 'There was something so free about it!'
The result is a very fun binge-watch, but this is not one of those shows the whole family can watch together. This is a binge best enjoyed solo or with a significant other.
Malin Akerman ( Billions ) and Brittany Snow (she's in the upcoming Netflix series The Beast in Me ) are phenomenal as two affluent wives who live life on the edge in a world where the rules don't seem to apply to the rich and powerful.
In a Zoom interview, Akerman and Snow both told me that they read Cobb's sex-fueled novel after reading a few of Cutter's gripping scripts. They also disclosed that the televised version is even more salacious than the book.
'We took some liberties that will surprise the fans. No one who has read the book will feel like they already know the ending,' teased Akerman, who also described the importance of working with an intimacy coordinator for the raunchy sex scenes and what it took to get into her character's skin.
'She's fabulous, and I think some of the fun that we get to have as actresses is living vicariously through our characters. As much as audience members get to live vicariously through them while watching, we get that added element of reading the scripts and going, 'Oh, my God, this is such a page-turner!' This is such a binge-worthy show, and I get to play one of these characters who are so dynamic.'
Akerman's Margo Banks escaped an unsavory past and will do anything to avoid going back where she came from. She has a real penchant for getting into trouble, which might be her downfall alone, but she seems to take those around her down too. Snow's Sophie O'Neil, an East Coast liberal who recently moved to the red state of Texas with her husband and son, also has some dark secrets of her own.
With a wide grin, Akerman spoke with admiration about Margo's zest for life and cunning ways. 'I love the fact that she's a free bird; she does what she wants. I'm more of a people pleaser in real life. I wish I could be a little bit more like Margot, not totally,' she added, laughing.
At first, Sophie is equal parts shocked and horrified by the wealthy MAGA MILFs she's suddenly surrounded by, but she cannot resist the group's Queen Bee, Margo, with whom she's quickly enamored and seduced. Margo's hedonistic lifestyle and carefree attitude appeal to her because, in many ways, she's a prisoner of her own making, living a routine, morally acceptable, and dull existence.
Snow discussed portraying the repressed Sophie and how much fun it was to play this woman who cannot resist the temptations of Margo's provocative ways. Their friendship sparks something within her that she cannot escape, and soon her safe, structured life devolves into chaos as the two become obsessed with each other, sparking jealousy within the group.
'To feel like a good wife and mother, she feels that she needs to live within this box. Meeting Margo, who devours life, challenges those beliefs. I think she's enticed not only by that feeling of freedom, but also by a calling back to who she once was. That was the thing that enticed me the most about the character. I definitely relate to that exploration of getting into your thirties and becoming this woman, owning your power, and taking up space in a room,' said Snow, adding, 'I loved the transition that Sophie goes through to get there.'

Akerman and Snow are dynamic in their roles, as is the entire cast, including Chrissy Metz, Katie Lowes, and Dermot Mulroney. These deliciously written characters are drawn like moths to a flame to anything and everything naughty and dangerous. I don't think there's been a book-to-screen adaptation this salacious since E.L. James' 'Fifty Shades of Grey.'
Akerman's bodacious performance includes several salacious sex scenes, which she explained required a lot of trust on set. 'It was a real team effort from the top down, from the show creator to the intimacy coordinator, to the cast and crew,' she explained, referencing the comfort, respect, and trust she felt while shooting these scenes.
'When there's that base, then I'm ready to play and make this character authentic, but if you don't feel comfortable with the people around you, then that becomes a bit trickier. Luckily, that was not the case for this. It was just magnificent. Brittany and I could really trust one another and play.'
Akerman described Margo as fun and wild. She also says that she's dangerous and manipulative. 'I think she's a survivor. It's hard to say if she's good or bad. It all exists within.'
'Sophie is also a survivor,' added Snow. 'She's gone through hardships as well, which molded her into a much different person. Like Margo, she's making decisions to survive. I think that's what attracts Sophie to Margo. She's living in a much different way, and taking it inward, whereas Margo is living very outward.'
As for Sophie's undoing, Snow attributes it to Margo's influence while acknowledging that these characteristics were already inside of her. 'I feel like this happens to a lot of women when they start shedding the confines they're in and come into their own.'
Cutter's message detailed her intentions in adapting Cobb's novel; she wanted to keep the show juicy, but grounded in a recognizable portrayal of Texas today, without shying away from the topic of divisive politics in this country.
' The Hunting Wives is a show that is not afraid to get its hands dirty…unflinching in its exploration of sexuality, social dynamics, marriage, and political realities. But while it portrays characters on opposite sides of the culture war, there is no good guy or bad guy because I love each of these flawed characters equally.'

Popular Netflix series "The Hunting Wives" filmed in Charlotte

Netflix's "The Hunting Wives" was filmed in and around Charlotte and fans are starting to notice. Why it matters: North Carolina's film industry is quietly boosting tourism as visitors flock to recognizable backdrops. Plus, the star-studded show is heading into its second straight week as a top 10 series on Netflix. Catch up quick: "The Hunting Wives" is based on May Cobb's 2021 novel by the same name. It follows Sophie (played by Brittany Snow from "Pitch Perfect" and "John Tucker Must Die") as she and her family move from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the fictional town of Maple Brook, Texas. There she meets Margo (played by Malin Åkerman from "27 Dresses") and her husband Jed (played by Dermot Mulroney from "My Best Friend's Wedding"). Other familiar faces in the show include Chrissy Metz from "This Is Us" as Starr and Katie Lowes from "Scandal" as Jill. You can stream all eight episodes of the first season now. Be prepared for a Rated-R murder-mystery with a lot of nudity. Below are nine filming locations and local businesses we spotted while watching the show. Don't worry, we won't spoil anything for you. Coyote Joe's The popular Country bar and live music venue appears in multiple episodes. Show creators kept the name, so you'll recognize it immediately. The Park Church This Charlotte church, which has served its congregation for more than 100 years, was a main setting on the show, where it's called "Holy Horizon Church." Lake Norman Margo and Jed's lake house is actually an Airbnb on Lake Norman called the Azalea Retreat. The 6-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom, 6,500-square-foot log cabin sleeps 22 people and includes lake views, plus a private dock. Main Street in Mooresville If you're looking for the town of Maple Brook, you'll find it in downtown Mooresville. The fictional town came to life about an hour north of Charlotte. In episode two, Sophie goes shopping in the quaint downtown, which was decorated with "Maple Brook" signs for the show. Dilworth Tasting Room Dilworth Tasting Room's original location off Tremont Avenue appears in episode four. Margo and Callie have met up for mimosas here. Stop by: 300 E Tremont Ave. The Social Cow Ice Cream Truck Maebel, an old mail truck turned ice cream truck, can be spotted in the backdrop of a scene in episode four, where Salazar and Starr are having a conversation at a waterfront park. Stop by: You can find the Social Cow at The Market at 7th Street (224 E 7th St.). Open Tuesday through Friday from 12—8pm. Rodeway Inn University Area This former budget motel is first shown in episode five and serves as a key location in the latter half of the season. The now-closed site is one of several Sugar Creek budget motels being developed into affordable housing. Falcon Trail Trailhead Falcon Trail Trailhead in Richfield, NC, served as the backdrop for several outdoor scenes, according to the Observer. The five-mile portion of the Carolina Thread Trail connects Misenheimer at Pfeiffer University to Richfield. Stop by: Richfield Park Road and HWY 49, Richfield, NC 28137 Chapter 6 This popular Mediterranean restaurant, which we rated as one of the best in the city this year, is where Margo and Callie go to have drinks in episode eight. Stop by: 2151 Hawkins St., in South End

Katie Lowes Talks About The Once-In-A-Career Role In ‘The Hunting Wives'

Katie Lowes talks about the incredible experience she had starring in 'The Hunting Wives.' Viewers cannot stop talking about The Hunting Wives. Love it, or not, it's a twisted thriller with a lot of steamy sex scenes and a fun binge-watch. But it's not just the sheer amount of nudity that has gotten viewers hot and bothered; as high ratings for this show and a slew of like-minded reality series prove, watching beautiful, wealthy people misbehaving makes for good TV. Perhaps, it's voyeurism intertwined with a dose of Schadenfreude when karma comes knocking, that serves as a sort of justice. Katie Lowes, well known for her roles in soapy dramas, said she's never experienced anything quite like her character Jill, a preacher's wife and obsessively doting mother with a dark side that's hidden beneath meticulously coiffed hair and a plastered-on smile. 'Jill is the type of juicy character that every actor dreams of playing. This was a once-in-a-career opportunity. ' The sex-driven drama, originally set to premiere on Starz, is now streaming its first season exclusively on Netflix in the U.S. for one year. Fans are hopefully optimistic that there will be a second season, but there has been no official word yet. However, the show reached No. 3 on Netflix's global English TV Top 10 list with 5.2 million views and No. 3 on the U.S. only English TV Top 10 list. Making the cut suggests that we might hear good news soon. Despite Jill's obvious issues, Lowes defends her character, who, like many in the show, faces an unfortunate demise. When asked if Jill got what she deserved, Lowes immediately replied with, 'Absolutely not! She did nothing wrong!' Well, as fans of the show know all too well, none of these characters are exactly innocent, but as Lowes points out, Jill killing Chrissy Metz's Starr was self-defense and justified. 'I stand by my character.' Though the viewer does see Starr approach Jill's house, shotgun in hand and ready to rumble, we do not see exactly what happened when Jill opened the door. We just know it wasn't good. The viewer, like Malin Akerman's Margo and Jaime Ray Newman's Callie, see the result of whatever that exchange was, which was Starr's bloody corpse splayed out on Jill's pristine kitchen floor. This fan is hoping Lowes and Metz can return in flashbacks in a second season to fill in the blanks on this. Of course, we also need to know what happens between Margo and Brittany Snow's character, Sophie. Lowes acknowledges her character's imperfections and has empathy for her lonely existence. 'She has a weird Oedipal obsession with her son. She's a helicopter parent, but this is a heightened version of that. She needs a lot of therapy. And her marriage is horrible; I think she's had sex with her husband a handful of times, if that. She has nothing other than her son and the church, but he comes first. I don't think she's been loved by anyone or anything in her life. She got married very young and had a baby, and didn't have many intimate experiences in her life. And so I think a lot of her wiring has gotten crossed.' As for her character's dramatic death at the end of what could be a first season, Lowes knew this was the deal when she first signed on to the Rebecca Cutter-helmed drama. Cutter, who served as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, adapted May Cobb's bestselling novel of the same name for television, and if you're a fan of The Hunting Wives, her drama Hightown is also streaming on Netflix. 'To say, 'You c**ts' and then die is something that will only happen once in my career, and I'm so grateful to Rebecca. Jill deserved the best death scene because I had the best time portraying her. I've never received this many texts and calls about a show! I'm just gobsmacked,' she exclaimed, referencing the number of messages she's received about the numerous steamy sex scenes and frontal nudity woven throughout the eight episodes. 'I'm getting texts from people of all ages, but there's a difference in what they're saying. My older friends are commenting on the amount of nudity, including full frontal, and the numerous sex scenes. Younger friends are obsessed with the show's twists and turns and the plotlines, and they're not even mentioning the sex at all.' Currently, Lowes can be seen in three series on Netflix: Shonda Rhimes' Scandal and Inventing Anna, and now The Hunting Wives. Though she's well known for sudsy dramas, Lowes is also fantastic in lighter fare, including the adorably charming Merry Kiss Cam, directed by Lisa France. The rom-com, currently streaming on Hulu, has had a surge in viewing following the Coldplay incident. Katie Lowes in 'The Hunting Wives' on Netflix. As Jill, who might just be the only person in the East Texas town of Maple Brook who isn't fornicating with friends and neighbors behind her husband's back, Lowes missed out on the steamy sex scenes. 'My clothes stayed on,' she laughed, somewhat relieved about one thing. 'I have yet to make that phone call to my dad to prepare him.' As for whether she'd be open to filming sex scenes like several of her co-stars, Lowes replied, 'I'm totally game if the storyline calls for it.' She also explained that she feels differently now about these types of scenes than she did when she was a younger actress, and she praised the show for its brave take on female empowerment around sexuality, admitting it's had her thinking. 'Once I turned 40, I had this new feeling about sex scenes. I'm just sort of like, 'F**k it.' I used to be really careful about things like that. I used to be conscious about being naked. I've been naked on stage before, but that was before the invention of the iPhone,' she said, referring to her time at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where such on-stage nudity was considered artsy. 'Nudity was part of a lot of the plays I did, but I haven't done anything like that since. I've always been conscientious, and I don't know, I've sort of been like, 'Oh, my gosh, I had two kids. I'm in my mid-40s. I'm coming up on menopause.' I don't know what that would be like now, but I feel like I could stand to spice it up a little bit.' She reflected on the behind-the-scenes fun the cast and crew had during the five months of filming in Charlotte, North Carolina. 'This was the first time many of us had ever left our children for a job,' adding that they each traveled back and forth, and their families also came to visit. 'I had always taken my kids on every job. And now we're at that crossroads where they're in school, and I couldn't pull them out. I had a lot of anxiety about leaving them.' Katie Lowes and Jaime Ray Newman in 'The Hunting Wives' on Netflix. The experience wasn't short on fun, she added, saying they had almost as much fun as their respective characters. 'We all lived in the same apartment building, like Melrose Place with a pool in the middle. After filming, we'd go honky-tonkin' at Coyote Joe's.' Lowes is filled with gratitude for the entire experience. 'I'm a New Yorker, a Long Island girl. What a dream to play a Southern belle…a clutch-your-pearls, the higher-the-hair, closer-to-God, larger-than-life woman. I had so much fun and am so grateful to Rebecca for trusting me with her.' She hypothesized about a few additional questions, including whether she believes that Jill knew that Margo and Brad were having an affair, and that Margo got pregnant and had an abortion. 'I don't think so because she might have killed her at that point!' Back to the question about Jill's death with the possibility of a season two hanging in the air, Lowes said, 'I'd follow Rebecca to the ends of the earth and do whatever she wanted. Hopefully, Jill's ghost will get some revenge.'
