92 Bangladeshi nationals held for illegal stay in southwest Delhi; 142 detained since December
has apprehended 92 Bangladeshi nationals for illegally staying in the country in two different operations during a special drive in southwest Delhi, an official said on Tuesday. With this, the total number of Bangladeshi nationals detained in the district since December 26, 2024, has reached 142, he said.
According to police, a 10-day-long special operation was launched recently in areas under the jurisdiction of the Southwest district to identify and detain foreign nationals living illegally.
Acting on intelligence inputs and with the help of local informers, teams carried out door-to-door verification in several vulnerable localities.

"In the course of the drive, 88 Bangladeshi nationals were detained from areas such as Sarojini Nagar, Kishangarh, Safdarjung Enclave, Vasant Kunj (North and South), Kapashera, Palam village, Delhi Cantonment and Sagarpur," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Choudhary in a statement said.
The officer said that during interrogation, they failed to produce any valid documents to justify their stay in India.

Many were found in possession of Bangladeshi identity documents. Their claims were verified, and on establishing their illegal status, they were detained for further legal proceedings.
He said that the detainees admitted to entering India through illegal routes -- some crossed rivers on the India-Bangladesh border, while others infiltrated through gaps in border fencing.
Most of them had been residing in Delhi for several years and were employed as daily wagers and in domestic work.
In a separate operation, teams apprehended a Bangladeshi couple and their two minor children from the Delhi Cantonment area.
"They were identified as Mohd Asad Ali (44), his wife Nasima Begum (40), son Mohd Naim Khan (18) and daughter Asha Moni (13). Police said the family had been residing illegally in the Delhi Cantonment area for the past 12 years," said the DCP.
None of them could furnish any valid Indian citizenship documents. During questioning, they confessed to being natives of Farooq Bazar Ajwatari, Phulbari Kurigram in Bangladesh.
The police said the family's statements have been recorded and procedures for deportation are being initiated through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
So far, the southwest district police have apprehended 142 Bangladeshi nationals from December last year.

Once this window is closed, he said, Aadhaar cards will only be issued to people aged over 18 years in 'rarest of rare cases', and will only be issued by Deputy Commissioners after seeking reports from the district police and Foreigners' Tribunals. 'If someone is left behind for whatever reason even after one year, they will have to apply to the relevant DC, and the DC will consult all stakeholders, like the Superintendent of Police, Foreigners Tribunal and will be able to give it in the rarest of rare cases,' he said. Last month, following another cabinet meeting, Sarma had said that the cabinet was discussing a policy for new Aadhaar cards for adults in the state to be issued only by Deputy Commissioners. This, he said, was to prevent 'infiltrators' from availing the document. The existing process is that applications are made at Aadhaar centres, and a verification is done at the district level by ADCs or Circle Officers to check whether the applicant resides in the particular district.

VARANASI: To curb illegal land plotting in the city, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) is preparing a list of individuals and organisations involved in such activities, with special focus on listed colonisers. Authorities said that in various areas under the Varanasi development region, multiple landowners, developers, and colonisers are illegally dividing land into small plots and selling them to the public without layout map approval from the VDA, violating Section 14 of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act. The VDA stated that these colonisers carry out irregular planning and development without following the master plan's land use rules and minimum plot sizes. They often fail to provide basic infrastructure facilities such as sewers, drinking water, roads, electricity, parks, and green spaces. Illegal plotting also damages agricultural land and natural habitats. Buyers of these unauthorised plots risk financial losses due to legal actions such as demolitions. Stranger befriends woman at New Delhi railway station, abducts her baby — 48-hour rescue op follows
Earlier this week, a woman boarded a train from Chennai with her three-month-old baby. She was heading to Delhi to visit a relative in Anand Parbat. When she arrived at New Delhi Railway Station, she met a man who struck up a conversation — he spoke with her for over two hours to gain her trust. Claiming to be a helpful acquaintance, he offered to accompany her to her relative's house. Panicking, the woman immediately approached the police and reported her child missing. Two days later, the baby was traced to Rajasthan and safely reunited with the mother, police said. According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday. An FIR was registered under BNS section 137(2) (kidnapping) at Anand Parbat police station, and a special team was set up under the supervision of senior officers. 'The team analysed CCTV footage from about 100 cameras… The suspect was seen getting away with the baby. To identify the accused person, his pictures were also run through the Artificial Intelligence FRS software used by the Central District. The accused was identified and traced to his village in Rajasthan's Khetri. Immediately, a police team was dispatched, and the accused was arrested. The kidnapped baby was safely recovered from the accused,' said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan. The accused, 32-year-old Jitender Kumar, allegedly told police during questioning that a relative had persuaded him to find a baby boy, promising financial support in return, as the family had no male child. So he travelled to Delhi intending to abduct a child. Police said he lay in wait at the railway station when he spotted the woman and approached her. Police marked the child's reunion with his mother by cutting a cake alongside the investigating team and the DCP. Videos of the celebration show the baby being handed over to a visibly relieved mother. Speaking to the police team, the mother said, 'I lost my child in Delhi, but with the help of all the police uncles here, I was reunited with him. I'm very grateful for their help.'
