Yoga Celebration Bridges Cultural Ties Between Malaysia And India
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Yoga continues to serve as a powerful bridge for Malaysia-India cultural ties and youth engagement, as more than 1,200 participants joined the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025 celebration at the iconic Batu Caves here yesterday.
Jointly organised by the High Commission of India here and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (NSCBICC), in collaboration with several Malaysian partner organisations, the event was held under the global theme 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health.'
Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, B.N. Reddy, said the message of unity and inner balance through yoga is increasingly resonating with Malaysians of all ages.
'There is growing popularity of yoga in Malaysia across the age groups and its wider integration into wellness, physical as well as mental health programmes,' he said in a statement issued by the Indian High Commission here.
The event was also attended by the Ministry of Youth and Sports secretary-general, Datuk Ts Dr K. Nagulendran, who joined as the chief guest.
A 40-minute yoga session, based on the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP), was led by trained instructors, with the demonstration of yoga asanas (postures) being well received by the participants.
IDY is celebrated annually on June 21 following its declaration by the United Nations in 2014, recognising yoga's universal appeal and benefits for physical and mental well-being.
This year marks the 11th edition of the celebration, rooted in the ancient Indian practice that continues to gain worldwide popularity.
Meanwhile on a separate event, the Sakthi School of Yoga entered the Malaysia Book of Records after gathering 5,368 participants during its IDY event held at MAEPS, Serdang yesterday.

Shape up or ship out: No promotion for overweight MACC officers from 2026, says Azam
KOTA BARU, July 4 — Starting January 2026, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers or personnel who are obese or do not meet the required body mass index (BMI) will not be eligible for promotion will not be eligible for promotion, said MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He said the move was aimed at emphasising the importance of health among MACC personnel, while also ensuring their fitness remained at an optimal level. Azam said a circular on the matter would be issued next week, and all officers would be given six months to manage their health. 'This especially applies to those with weight issues; they need to lose weight unless they have underlying medical conditions. It's important because departments like the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have already set a BMI requirement for promotions. 'I will implement this at the MACC, as we are also an enforcement agency. I want to make sure our officers are always fit and able to do their job well,' he said. Azam said the MACC has set a maximum BMI limit of 27, with internal administrative directives to be issued soon. 'I had earlier announced that (personnel) at each state would be required to undergo health check-ups at government hospitals every three months. Just four doctors in clinic to see 300 patients a day? Health Ministry says aware of high load at Sg Buloh Hospital
SUNGAI BULOH, July 4 — The Health Ministry said it is aware of the high patient load at referral hospitals such as Sungai Buloh Hospital, following concerns that its doctors are overworked. After it was highlighted that the hospital's Orthopaedic Specialist Clinic had to see 300 patients on June 30, 2025, the ministry said the number had also included family members or caregivers. 'We understand the difficulties faced by patients and their families, especially concerning waiting times,' it posted on X yesterday. 'The Ministry of Health is aware of the high patient load at referral hospitals such as Sungai Buloh Hospital and continuous efforts are being made to improve patient flow.'
