Asia Cup 2025: Who from the 'Class of 2023' still remain in the mix as India's squad announcement nears

Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma NEW DELHI: With the Indian selectors expected to unveil the squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19, speculation is mounting over who will make the cut for the continental T20I event. India, placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, will feature in the tournament scheduled in the UAE from September 9–28. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! This edition will be played in the T20I format, aligning with the T20 World Cup cycle next year. The last edition in 2023, however, was an ODI competition jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. That squad, led by Rohit Sharma, lifted the trophy, but much has changed in the two years since. Poll Which player from the Class of 2023 do you think will be missed the most in the 2025 squad? Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Ravindra Jadeja From the Class of 2023, three stalwarts — Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja — have retired from T20Is, drawing curtains on their illustrious careers in the shortest format. Their absence has created both a leadership vacuum and opportunities for the next generation. Several others who featured two years ago have drifted away from India's T20 set-up. Ishan Kishan, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Shami, and Shardul Thakur have not been part of the scheme in recent times, either due to form, fitness, or selection dynamics. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. Suryakumar Yadav , now India's T20I captain, heads the list, with Hardik Pandya , Jasprit Bumrah, and Shubman Gill expected to play central roles. Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Tilak Varma, and Kuldeep Yadav also remain in the selectors' consideration. The key talking point, however, is how many of these 2023 squad members will survive the transition. The rise of youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, and Jitesh Sharma has made competition stiffer, while experienced hands such as Pandya and Bumrah provide balance. As the BCCI gears up for the announcement, the focus will be on continuity versus fresh blood. " Hum Mar Gaye...": Ex-India Star Reveals Shocking Consequences Of 2007 World Cup Group Stage Exit

While India have achieved two 50-over World Cup wins and three World Cup finals in their cricket history, one of the dark moments came during the 2007 Cricket World Cup. India lost to both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the group stage of that edition, leading to an early exit from the tournament. The disappointing performance led to outrage amongst fans in the country. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was part of that squad, has now provided an insight into the mindset within the team, which included star names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni. "We were in the hotel for two days. Aisa laga ke hum mar gaye (It felt as if we had died). Everybody had that feeling, and we were all very sad. Everyone was in shock," Irfan revealed in an interview with The Lallantop, as quoted by Sportskeeda. India were drawn alongside Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda in Group B of the 2007 World Cup, held in the West Indies. India suffered a shock defeat to Bangladesh in their opening game, but hopes of qualification to the Super 8 stage returned after a thumping win over Bermuda. However, India failed to chase down a target of 255 against Sri Lanka in their final group game, leading to an unprecedented and unceremonious exit from the 2007 World Cup. The 2007 Cricket World Cup is often regarded as a turning point in Indian cricket, which also saw a transition take place in leadership. India would go on to win multiple ICC titles in the next decade under the leadership of MS Dhoni, including the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 50-over World Cup.

Irfan Pathan Reveals Mood In Dressing Room After Early World Cup Exit: 'Aisa Laga Ke Hum Mar Gaye'

Irfan Pathan revealed the mindset within the Indian cricket team after India's 2007 Cricket World Cup campaign. India are one of the most successful teams in cricket, having won two 50-over World Cups, apart from finishing runners-up in World Cup finals. One of the darkest moments of India's cricketing history, though, remains the 2007 Cricket World Cup. India's 2007 World Cup campaign in the West Indies was a roller-coaster of emotions. It began with a shocking defeat to Bangladesh. India were bowled out for just 191 in 49.3 overs, and the spirited Bangladesh side chased down the target with five wickets to spare in 48.3 overs. Under pressure, India bounced back strongly against Bermuda, posting a mammoth 413/5 in their 50 overs — their highest World Cup total at the time — and then skittling out the opposition for 156 to register a record 257-run victory. However, hopes of progressing to the next round were dashed when India, chasing Sri Lanka's competitive 254/6, faltered yet again with the bat, collapsing to 185 in 43.3 overs and losing by 69 runs, a result that confirmed their early exit from the tournament. What Did Irfan Pathan Say? Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who was part of that squad, has provided insight into the mindset within the team, which included star names like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, and MS Dhoni. 'We were in the hotel for two days. Aisa laga ke hum mar gaye (It felt as if we had died). Everybody had that feeling, and we were all very sad. Everyone was in shock," Irfan was quoted as saying in an interview with The Lallantop. The 2007 Cricket World Cup is regarded as a turning point in Indian cricket, which also saw a transition in leadership. India would go on to win multiple ICC titles in the next decade under the leadership of MS Dhoni, including the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 50-over World Cup. Irfan, on the other hand, represented India in 120 ODIs, 29 Tests, and 24 T20Is over the course of his career. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
