Security forces recover eleven firearms, war-like stores in Manipur

Security forces recovered at least 11 firearms and war-like stores in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts of Manipur, police said on Friday.
The arms included one country-made AK rifle with magazine, one lathode gun, four country-made pistols with magazine, three country-made single-barrel rifles, one country-made Sten carbine and four 'Pumpis'.
The Pumpi is an umbrella term used for various improvised light weapons.
Besides, "military gears including BP jacket, helmet, Baofeng Walkie Talkie Set without antenna, and a pair of jungle boots were recovered from the forest of Maovom village" in Churachandpur district on Thursday, the police said in a statement.
In another operation, a .32 pistol with two empty magazines and two live rounds of .32 mm ammunition were recovered from Wangoo Naodakhong area in Bishnupur district on Thursday.
One person was also arrested for possessing an illegal handgun in Imphal East district.
"Security forces continue to conduct search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable areas across districts," the statement said.
Manipur, which witnessed the killing of at least 260 people in ethnic violence since May 2023, is currently under President's rule. The strife between the Meitei and Kuki communities also rendered thousands of people homeless, forcing them to stay in relief camps.

Huge weaponry discovered, 58 detained in Afghanistan
Kabul: Police have discovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Afghanistan's Helmand province over the past three months, with 58 people arrested, Provincial director for counter-criminal activities Mawlawi Abdul Satar Amin said on Sunday. The weaponry, which included 45 pieces of pistols, seven pieces of Kalashnikovs, nine pieces of other types of assault rifles, hundreds of projectiles and other military equipment, was discovered during operations in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and several districts over the past three months, the official said. All the collected arms and ammunition were handed over to the concerned authorities recently, the official asserted. Police have also taken into custody 58 individuals on charges of involvement in criminal activities such as theft, armed robbery, and murder, the official said, adding police won't allow anyone to create law and order problems in the province, Xinhua news agency reported. In similar operations, police also reported the discovery of arms and ammunition, including 13 pieces of AK-47 and six rocket launchers, in Helmand's neighbouring Kandahar province on Saturday. On July 5, the counter-terrorism police discovered a similar case, including more than 100 pieces of firearms, during a series of operations in the same province over the past two months, said a statement of the Ministry for Interior Affairs. The 105 pieces of variety of assault rifles including 14 stocks of Kalashnikovs, 63 pieces of pistols, a rocket propelled grenade, some machineguns and more than 3,000 of bullets of light and heavy weapons have been recovered during operations in different parts of the province, the statement posted on the Ministry's X account added. Police have also taken into custody a number of people for carrying arms illegally and handed them over to the judiciary for further investigation, the statement noted, without revealing the exact number of individuals detained back then. In similar operations, police also discovered and seized six AK-47 assault rifles in the northern Sari Pul province the week before.

Manipur Insurgent Groups Modifying Looted Weapons Into Snipers Rifles
New Delhi: Manipur's ethnic insurgent groups from both the Meitei and Kuki communities are modifying weapons, many of them looted from police armouries in 2023, and converting them into makeshift sniper rifles to increase their range and lethality, officials said on Sunday. They said the weapons have been converted into makeshift sniper rifles to target opposing communities. Among over 6,000 weapons looted from police armouries were .303 rifles, AK assault rifles and INSAS rifles and carbines. The standard .303 rifle has an effective kill range of about 500 metres, the officials said, adding that after modifying the butt of the gun and placing a specialised telescope with other specifications, the round from the same rifle can travel much further, with more accuracy and lethality. The AK-47 is most effective within 300-400 metres only. These modifications suggest that the groups wanted to engage in long-distance combat, but before they could pose a new challenge to security forces, the police along with the Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces confiscated these weapons from various districts of the Imphal valley and hills. In June, Manipur Police and other security forces recovered 328 weapons during simultaneous operations across five districts of the Imphal Valley on the intervening night of June 13 and 14 from Meitei dominated insurgent groups and 203 arms in first week of July from four districts in the hill areas where Kuki insurgent groups have an upper hand. The weapons recovered from these two raids included INSAS rifles, AK series rifles, Self Loading Rifle, modified sniper rifles, grenade launchers, pistols and country-made 0.22 rifle. Immediately after clashes broke out in 2023 between the two communities that have claimed 260 lives so far, security agencies had seized guns fabricated from parts of uprooted electric poles or galvanised iron (GI) pipes. After the clashes turned bloodier in June 2023, the people of the hill district, who are traditionally hunters and have the ability to improvise and make deadly weapons, uprooted some electric poles and water pipes. This community traditionally used swords, spears, bows and arrows. Later, they started using muzzle guns and bullets also known as 'Thihnang'. The uprooted electric poles were used to manufacture indigenous cannon, also known as 'pumpi' or 'bampi', filled with scrap iron and other metallic items which act as bullets or pellets. These are manufactured by village blacksmiths, also known as 'Thih-Kheng Pa' who often render free service to defend their community, the officials said. The hill community is also known for its techniques in guerrilla warfare and often defends itself by carrying out sudden attacks on approaching people or ambushing them by rolling down huge stones in steep areas. The electric pole converted 'bampi' is given an electric charge and is operated from a distance as the possibility of the pipe or the electric pole bursting in the middle cannot be ruled out, the officials said.
