‘Do what's right, don't be greedy,' Lunar New Year prophecy tells Hongkongers

Published: 11:25am, 30 Jan 2025
Hong Kong is going to be fine as long as everyone does the right thing and is not greedy, a rural chief has said after drawing a fortune stick at an annual Lunar New Year ritual.
Heung Yee Kuk chairman Kenneth Lau Ip-keung drew the stick on the second day of the Year of the Snake on Thursday and gave his interpretation of the fortune.
He also called on authorities to spend within their means given the higher-than-expected deficit of the current financial year and urged them not to raise taxes.
The No 24 'neutral' stick read: 'Do not do anything wrong during your life or cause trouble because of your greed, you will not waste your efforts if you have a noble person helping you.'
Interpreting the fortune, Lau said: 'This fortune means that everyone should do good things and everyone should do what is right.
'As long as you are not greedy, it will be OK. Things that are done should also be practical.' Rural chief Kenneth Lau has urged Hongkongers to do what is right and not to be greedy. Photo: Dickson Lee

Mainland firms see SAR as springboard to global market

Photo: RTHK Angus Yip speaks to Janice Lo Two mainland firms are seeking to go global through Hong Kong, capitalising on the city's strengths. Shenzhen-based Insta360 -- the maker of action cameras -- said it's setting up its first flagship store in Hong Kong, according to the company's exclusive distributor in the SAR, Vast World Limited. It will also be Insta360's first global multi-storey flagship store, where one of the floors will be used as working studios and to hold regular exhibitions. Senior marketing manager Angus Yip of Vast World Limited said the ability to establish a presence in the SAR showcases Insta360's strengths. He said the flagship Hong Kong store will carry the latest gadgets as soon as they're released on the mainland. "And also, we will have the priority in buying the newest product. So in Hong Kong, I think it's quite attractive to the international travellers or the visitors," Yip said. "Even the shipping to the US may take months or at least a week. But in Hong Kong, you can also get the newest and also you can try the newest [gadgets]." While Insta360 also has flagship stores elsewhere such as in the Philippines, Yip said the culture of Hongkongers' of always seeking the latest items can help promote its product to the global market. Another mainland firm, Eyebright Medical Technology -- an ophthalmic medical device manufacturer -- set up its office in the SAR in 2023 with the help of InvestHK, before moving into Science Park last year. Public relations manager Charles Hui from the Hong Kong office said it is hoping to make their products available in the SAR as well. Four of its products were recently listed as medical devices under the Department of Health, paving the way for them to be sold locally. "So after 2023, we actually received our listing approval from MDD [Medical Device Division] in July this year. So we are asking different distributors and trying to work with different companies to sell our products," he said. Hui added that the firm wants to the SAR as a springboard to Malaysia and South Korea this year, before expanding to more places in Asia. He also said Eyebright Medical Technology (Hong Kong) is working with local universities on research and development projects, and they are now at the final stage in ironing out the details and contracts. InvestHK's head of innovation and technology Andy Wong said many of the companies it helped to set up shop in the SAR are from the mainland. He expects a double-digit growth in the number of mainland firms expanding their business to Hong Kong this year.

War victory key to revival of Chinese civilisation: CE

War victory key to revival of Chinese civilisation: CE John Lee says Hong Kong played a significant role in the war against Japan. Photo courtesy of Information Services Department A forum is held at the Science Museum marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Photo: RTHK Chief Executive John Lee said China's victory in the Second World War was key to the revival of the Chinese civilisation. Lee on Monday delivered a speech at a forum organised by the DAB and state-owned logistics firm China Merchants Port marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. In a recorded message, the CE said the victory marked a "historical turning point" for the country to transition into rejuvenation, adding that Hong Kong had "never been absent" in the battles back then. "Hong Kong people are closely connected with our fellow countrymen, and we have always fought together side by side. From sending supplies to rescuing those who were trapped, from joining the frontline of the war to defending the sea lanes, Hong Kong has never been absent. "Many Hongkongers joined the guerrilla forces such as the Hong Kong-Kowloon Brigade and the Dongjiang Column, as well as other resistance groups. Many patriotic figures in Hong Kong were willing to sacrifice their lives to protect their compatriots and support the resistance movement." The Hong Kong-Kowloon Brigade took shape after the fall of Hong Kong to Japanese forces in December 1941. It was later renamed Hong Kong-Kowloon Independent Brigade and came under the Dongjiang, or East River, Column. Lee also said the SAR government will hold various activities, including special exhibitions and film screenings, to commemorate the anniversary. "The SAR government will combine patriotic education, national security education and Chinese culture education so the younger generation can have the correct understanding of history and further develop their love for the country." Lee made it clear the government opposes any behaviour or speech that distorts history. Also speaking at the event at the Science Museum was DAB lawmaker and chairman Gary Chan, who said China's victory in the Sino-Japanese War contributed to the global triumph of the anti-fascist war.
