Nation's First Bilingual Student Recruitment AI Assistant Delivers Over £5.9M in Financial Benefits for Coleg y Cymoedd
- Welsh College partners with ICS.AI to develop 'ARNY', the nation's first 24/7 bilingual AI assistant in student recruitment
- Successful innovation leads to further Government funding for first Gen AI-based student course recommendation service, alongside other learning innovations
CARDIFF & LONDON, March 11, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Coleg y Cymoedd, one of Wales' largest further education providers, has achieved significant success in student recruitment through the deployment of artificial intelligence, partnering with ICS.AI, the leading provider for public sector AI transformation.
The partnership has delivered over £5.9 million in financial benefits with additional tuition revenue and operational cost savings*, and a record 18% increase in enrolments, in just one year. ARNY, ICS AI's AI-powered assistant has transformed the college's approach to student engagement and operational efficiency, leading to staff time savings and enabling the approval of a voluntary redundancy request, saving an estimated £50,800 annually.
Serving over 10,000 students across four campuses, Coleg y Cymoedd faced challenges in managing an extensive range of full-time and part-time courses while ensuring bilingual service delivery (in both English and Welsh) in compliance with the Welsh Language Act. Recognising the need for transformation, the college sought a solution to handle high enquiry volumes, particularly outside of traditional working hours when prospective students and their families often conducted research.
To address these challenges, the college collaborated with ICS.AI to develop ARNY, the first bilingual AI assistant in Welsh further education. Named after the college's four campuses (Aberdare, Rhondda, Nantgarw, and Ystrad Mynach), ARNY was designed with input from staff and students to address specific recruitment and engagement challenges. ICS.AI's SMART: AI Student Recruitment Copilot, built on Microsoft technology, deploys a pre-trained language model covering over 400 further education topics, and integrates seamlessly with the college's systems.
ARNY automated the handling of thousands of enquiries, 46% of which occurred outside traditional office hours. This ensures continuous support for prospective students during crucial decision-making periods while alleviating administrative pressures on staff. By streamlining routine enquiries, the AI assistant enables the admissions team to focus on personalised applicant interactions. Since its launch ARNY has handled over 5,000 queries, engaging over 3,000 conversations, reinforcing the success of its uptake.
The implementation of ARNY. led to a net enrolment has led to an increase of 523 students, representing an 18% rise compared to the previous year. Conversion rates have also improved, jumping from 72.68% to 80.21%, resulting in 443 additional successful applications. Furthermore, retention rates have strengthened, with 66 fewer early withdrawals and non-starters. The AI assistant also complies with WGAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards, ensuring inclusivity in student recruitment.
Rory Meredith, Director of Digital Strategy and Innovation at Coleg y Cymoedd, commented: "Working with ICS AI, we've totally overhauled and improved the student recruitment journey, offering 24/7 bilingual support that ensures no student enquiry goes unanswered. This innovation has transformed the way we engage with prospective students while significantly reducing administrative pressures on our team. It's led to the type of engagement we've never seen before."
Martin Neale, CEO of ICS.AI, added: "Our partnership with Coleg y Cymoedd is a significant step forward in demonstrating the power of AI within education, an area that we at ICS.AI take incredibly seriously. By integrating advanced AI solutions into recruitment and student engagement, we are setting a new standard for efficiency and user experience in the education sector. The financial benefits this partnership has delivered are a tangible example of how this crucial sector can improve service but also cut costs."
The success of ARNY has also secured Welsh Government funding through the D2030 FE Capital Fund, supporting the college's broader AI adoption strategy. The first part of this is the Course Recommendation Skill, using GPT-4 technology, the college's first implementation of Gen AI, which has recently gone live. It provides personalised course suggestions based on students' interests, current academic level, and preferred campus. Additional AI copilots are being piloted to enhance teaching and learning methodologies and reduce administrative workloads for educators.

My father and I work at AT&T together. On our hourlong commutes, he teaches me valuable lessons about life and my career.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nicole Wen, 25, who works at AT&T. It has been edited for length and clarity. My dad got a job at AT&T more than 26 years ago. After college, he told me about the company's amazing internship programs. I ended up doing three summer internships there throughout college, so that's how I got my foot in the door with the company. Today, we're both at AT&T. He is in a leadership position within sales, and I am a principal project program manager. When I first started my full-time job about two years ago, I was living in a townhouse super close to my dad's house, so we would carpool together every day for an hour each way. The most time I've ever spent with him was in those car rides, and it was very special because we learned so much about each other. My dad moved to America from Taiwan when he was 14 years old. He had to learn English, went to high school in California, and then to college in New York, where he met my mom. He then started working with a company that eventually became part of the AT&T family. During those car rides, he also shared a lot of life advice with me. The importance of having a good circle The more I got to know my dad, the more I realized he's a pretty cool guy. I learned he has more friends than I do. He's part of several social groups, like a Porsche club and a coffee club. He even writes a newsletter for a car club. You would think I would know everything about him since he is my father, but no, I never knew any of this about my dad. He's just got so much going on outside work. He inspired me to join an employee resource group. We do a lot of charity work and fundraising events. Our main mission is to support high school students and offer college scholarships. My dad started joining the events too, and that's another thing that we do together now. Our favorite event is the Lunar New Year event, and it's very special coming from a mixed-race household. It teaches me a lot more about my culture. We try all the food together, and it's a really nice bonding experience. Never say 'no' to an opportunity My dad always says, "Never say no to an opportunity, big or small." He often explains to me that opportunities don't come around all the time. It's always a chance to learn something new, and being uncomfortable is OK. This advice has helped me a lot in my networking. I never say no, just like he told me. So if I randomly get invited to a happy hour, that's not even on my own team, I still go — even if I'm tired. I've met a lot of people that way. Have multiple areas of expertise My dad also always says you have to have multiple areas of expertise to elevate your career. If you are an expert in one thing, you're going to be known as an expert for that one thing, and you're going to stay there. He says that's something that he wishes he did differently — expand his expertise versus just siloing in one spot. That definitely stuck with me. I now remind myself that it's good to move around. When I now start to feel comfortable, I seek out discomfort. Three months ago, for example, I accepted a new role coming from one in finance. Now, I'm doing chief of staff work, which is all about planning internal events and thinking about our operations. It's under a whole new set of leaders and seeing a side of the business that I haven't even touched on yet. I've gotten very uncomfortable, and it's been so great — thanks to my dad.

I pay $2,800 every month toward my student loans. Although I only have $200 left each week to spend, I'll be debt-free this year.
The minimum payments on my student loans didn't make a dent in my balance. I decided to live with my parents and pay $2,800 to my student loans each month. Although I sometimes struggled with only $200 a week, I'm proud I'll be debt-free this year. As a college graduate walking the stage in 2023, I crossed the invisible threshold into what everyone calls "the real world." I said goodbye to the friends I had spent every moment of the last four years with and welcomed my new best friend, student loan debt. Living in the beautiful coastal town of Newport, Rhode Island, during college was the best experience of my life thus far, yet the worst thing for my bank account. I didn't bat an eye, dropping $20 every weekend to see a cover band, $15 to Uber downtown, and $16 for a salted caramel espresso martini. With a one-year grace period after graduating, I thought I had time to build my bank account backup to start paying off the weight of debt on my shoulders. Yet, little did I know that the interest still grew while I was adjusting to adulting. I knew I had to make drastic decisions — and fast. Minimum payments didn't cut it Fortunately, my parents were willing to let me live at home after graduating to get my feet on the ground. Moving back home under the same roof as my parents after years of freedom was far from my definition of fun, but it was ultimately the right move financially. For the first few months, I made minimum payments toward my $53,000 loan debt and smiled as the number in my bank account grew with my new full-time post-graduate salary. What I didn't realize was that, due to the interest rate, my student loan payments were making zero progress on my loans. One day, I logged into my account and saw that I owed $3,000 more than my original balance. It sent me into a complete spiral. I cried thinking I'd be in debt forever and would never be able to go on vacations or buy a new car. As an English major, I was unfamiliar with economics and how interest rates worked. With help from my boyfriend, I realized that minimum payments were not the answer to escaping rising interest rates and quickly becoming debt-free. I decided to devote about 80% of my monthly income, totaling $2,800, toward student loans, sometimes leaving me with only $200 to spend in a week. Working with little money With only $200 a week, I had to stop and think about the purchases I was making. Was an $8 grande iced vanilla latte with sweet cream foam from Starbucks really worth it, or could I just make a coffee at home? Was take-out necessary, or will a bowl of cereal suffice for dinner? Thankfully, living at home, I didn't have to pay rent or utilities, so I could focus my spending on essential purchases, including gas, while still having enough for the nonessentials like a manicure. Sometimes I thought I'd have plenty of money until my next paycheck, but then a gym membership or Netflix payment would go through. There were many days when I stressed about whether I could do normal things a postgraduate would, like spending money on takeout or buying a concert ticket. At times, I regretted my decision and wanted to lower my payments, but I never did. Trusting my gut, I stuck through the payments and carefully considered all my purchases. Debt-free in September If my calculations prove to be correct, I will officially be debt-free in September. There will be no more worrying about spending money on cocktails and coffee. I won't have to worry about my $1,400 bi-weekly payment clearing my account. If I had to make this decision again, I wouldn't change a thing. Despite logging into my loan and bank accounts almost daily for two years, I managed to make it work and always had some money in my account, even if the amount was small. What I originally thought would take 30 years to pay off is only taking two, which I am extremely proud of. Pushing through the stress and many tears was worth it, as I will now cross the threshold into financial freedom.
