
Google to invest $6 billion in southern India data centre, sources say
Due to be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, the data centre investment includes $2 billion in renewable energy capacity that will be used to power the facility, two Andhra Pradesh government sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
The search giant's data centre will be the largest in capacity and investment size in Asia and is part a multi-billion-dollar expansion of its data centre portfolio across the region in countries including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
In April, Alphabet said it was still committed to spending some $75 billion this year to build data centre capacity despite the economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff offensive.
Alphabet did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Andhra Pradesh's information technology minister Nara Lokesh, who is in Singapore to discuss investments with thegovernment and business leaders there, did not comment on the Google investment.
"We've made certain announcements like Sify, which are public," he said, referring to a 550-MW data centre Sify Technologies (SIFY.O), opens new tab plans to build in the state. "There are certain announcements which are not yet public. In October, we will make those announcements."
Andhra Pradesh, a state run by a leading ally of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was split into two in 2014, losing its former capital Hyderabad and a major revenue source to the newly created Telangana state.
Andhra Pradesh has since been looking to attract investments to ease the financial strains of high debt and social spending.
Lokesh said Andhra Pradesh has already been able to finalise investments in data centres with total capacity of 1.6 GW, adding that it aims to build 6 GW of data centres over the next five years from nearly zero currently.
He expects the initial 1.6 GW of already agreed data centres to be operational in the next 24 months. That would be more than the 1.4 GW currently in operation in the entire country, according to real estate consultancy Anarock.
"We're also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough of cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today," Lokesh said.
Cable landing stations - typically located close to data centres requiring fast and reliable connections to global networks - are used to store equipment which receives and relays data from undersea cables.
Lokesh also said the state was looking to build up energy infrastructure to meet sustainability requirements of data centres. He said he anticipated power generation capacity requirements of as much as 10 GW from the electricity-intensive industry over the next five years.
"Majority will end up being actually green energy, and that's the unique value proposition that we bring to the table," he said.
Some of the additional capacity will be coal-fired, however, as data centres require reliable, high volume power throughout the day, he added.

Big Tech's acquihire deals face regulatory scrutiny, outgoing EU antitrust official says
BRUSSELS, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Big Tech deals to acquire skills rather than major companies may soon come under the regulatory scrutiny they previously avoided, the outgoing head of the European Commission's antitrust unit said. Acquihires, in which Big Tech hires start-ups' founders and senior managers rather than acquire the companies, have been viewed by antitrust regulators as an attempt to evade merger rules. "It is important to preserve effective competition," Olivier Guersent, the director general at the competition unit, told Reuters in an interview earlier this week and ahead of his retirement on Thursday after a 33-year career tackling antitrust, cartels and financial services. He said the Commission was pushing national agencies with call-in powers to act. Such powers, enjoyed by Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Slovenia, Lithuania and Latvia, allow them to refer below-EU threshold mergers to the EU enforcer. "So we need to be patient and have enough member states that have call-in provisions and use them. But we are working on it. Within the ECN, we are actively encouraging it to do so," Guersent said. The European Competition Network is a forum for cooperation between the Commission and national regulators. Guersent said acquihires can be considered a merger as staff are part of a company's assets. Instances include Microsoft's (MSFT.O), opens new tab $650 million deal to hire most of AI start-up Inflection's staff, including its co-founders and Google's (GOOGL.O), opens new tab poaching of employees from chatbot startup both last year. Last month Google hired staff members from AI code generation startup Windsurf. Amazon hired AI firm Adept's co-founders and some of its team in June last year, while Meta poached data-labelling startup Scale AI's CEO in June after taking a multi-billion dollar stake. Guersent, who spearheaded the EU's landmark Digital Markets Act that aims to curb Big Tech's power, said the results were encouraging. "It made a difference in fields in which decades of antitrust enforcement have not managed to make a difference," he said. "Did it change everything as much as we would have liked? Probably not. So that's why success is always relative," he said, contrasting Apple's changes to its closed ecosystem with Meta's pushback.

AustralianSuper divests more than $26m of shares in poker machine giant Aristocrat from socially aware option
Australia's largest superannuation fund has divested more than $26m of shares in poker machine giant Aristocrat from its 'socially aware' option, after sustained criticism of its support for the gambling industry. The decision was made after a review of investments to ensure the fund was meeting the expectations of its ethically minded members. On Wednesday AustralianSuper confirmed its socially aware option had a higher percentage of overall investments in Aristocrat than its default balanced fund. The socially aware fund held $26.8m of Aristocrat shares, with a portfolio weighting of 0.61%. In June 2023, the weighting was 0.61%. But on Friday, AustralianSuper confirmed the socially aware fund no longer held any shares in the poker machine giant. AustralianSuper has confirmed the shares have been sold, rather than allocated to other funds. AustralianSuper said the decision was made to 'better meet member expectations'. Previously, the socially aware fund only excluded the tobacco industry. It has now banned investments in companies linked to gambling, nuclear weapons, animal welfare concerns and palm oil. As part of new screening rules, the socially aware fund will not invest in companies that generate more than 5% of revenue from the gambling industry. This includes companies that 'license their brand name to gambling products'. In June 2022, this option held $920m in Aristocrat shares. These shares account for 0.73% of the default fund's overall listed investments, up from 0.54% in June 2023. An AustralianSuper spokesperson said the fund was continuing to review Aristocrat's 'initiatives in responsible gambling'. In recent months, AustralianSuper had been increasing its holdings in Aristocrat. The company's latest disclosures showed the fund held more than 7% of the company's shares. In June 2022, the fund held 5.05% of Aristocrat's shares. It was not yet clear how the divestment announced on Friday would change that percentage. Before the announcement, an Aristocrat spokesperson said the company offered legal products in a highly regulated industry with risk management processes. 'We're striving to continuously improve our sustainability performance, in line with our focus on long-term business performance, the expectations of our stakeholders and our company values,' the spokesperson said. AustralianSuper is not the only fund to have increased investments in Aristocrat, despite sustained warnings of rising gambling harm across the country. Australian Retirement Trust had confirmed it now had about $226m in Aristocrat shares in its default balanced fund, which was described as 'a modest increase over time'. UniSuper's holdings in Aristocrat had increased from $139m in June 2022 to $283m. The super fund described the increase as a combination of the share price rising and 'an increase in funds under management in UniSuper's balanced option'. The Morningstar Sustainalytics executive director, Michelle Cameron, said Aristocrat was 'a high-performing business averaging 7.8% net income margin over recent years, outperforming the industry average'. 'From an investor perspective it has a strong balance sheet with a history of positive returns, yet its core business in gambling is ethically highly debated and contentious from a social harm perspective,' Cameron said. 'This is the dilemma for super funds as they balance strong financial returns.' The Alliance for Gambling Reform's chief executive, Martin Thomas, said AustralianSuper's divestment from its socially aware fund was 'highly significant'. 'While the numbers are slight in comparison to its overall investment, the recognition from our largest superannuation fund that gambling stocks are not an appropriate investment in an ethically minded fund is highly significant,' Thomas said. 'We believe that any ethical investor should divest themselves of gambling stocks. It appears bizarre and shortsighted that investors divest themselves from oil and gas stocks but go all in on gambling stocks.' Gamblers in New South Wales lost $2.17bn to poker machines in the first 90 days of this year. This equates to an average of $1m an hour to poker machines across the state, or more than $24m every day. Last month, a report commissioned by the Victorian government found the social cost of gambling in the state had doubled – from $7bn in 2014-15 to $14bn in 2022-23 – despite fewer people gambling.
