Crime prevention is top priority, says Kurnool SP
Speaking at an awareness campaign at Pullareddy Engineering College auditorium here on Friday, Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil said that crime prevention was the top priority of the police department. Three attempt self-immolation alleging ‘job fraud'
Trichy: Tension prevailed outside the district collectorate on Monday after three members of a family attempted self-immolation, alleging fraud by a woman who promised a job abroad for their son. K Selvaraj, 52, his wife S Selvi, 42, and her brother Saravanakumar V, 31, poured kerosene on themselves but were stopped by police before they could set fire. The family later submitted a petition to district collector V Saravanan. According to the petition, Selvaraj's son S Gopinath, 22, a BBA graduate from Namakkal, had been job-hunting since 2023. He claimed that a neighbour, Puneetha Rosy Malar, introduced herself as an agent who had helped over 1,000 people secure jobs abroad and offered to arrange a legal work visa for Poland. Gopinath said he paid her ₹3.3 lakh in instalments over two years. "She kept delaying, giving various excuses, and once even claimed the visa was ready, asking for an additional payment," he said. The family approached Thottiyam police after submitting a petition at the SP office. A police-mediated meeting led to the recovery of ₹25,000 on May 30. However, Gopinath alleged that police had not followed up since. After Monday's incident, the family was referred to the Court Police Station, where officials assured them the case would be investigated.

Maoist with bounty of Rs 2 lakh surrenders in Munger
Patna: A notorious Maoist, Hakka Sai, with a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on his head, surrendered to the Special Task Force (STF) and the SP in Munger on July 27. The surrender is a result of the relentless operations and pressure exerted by the Bihar STF against Naxal activities, as well as the state govt's Maoist surrender and rehabilitation policy. Sai, who was evading arrest for the past six years, was involved in numerous Maoist cases across Bihar and Jharkhand. His surrender follows a series of successful operations by the STF, including a recent encounter in Rajgir on July 5, where Maoist Suresh Koda was arrested, said a press statement issued by the police headquarters on Monday. Hakka was a key member of the Maoist group operating in Nalanda and had several cases registered against him, including attacks on police forces and involvement in ambushes. Notably, he was part of an attack on security forces in Kurwa valley in 2022 and a police-Maoist encounter in Muzaffarpur in April 2025, which resulted in the deaths of several Maoists.

Inter-state vehicle theft racket busted in Itanagar; 57 luxury cars worth ₹30 crore recovered
Itanagar, The Itanagar Capital Police have dismantled a major inter-state vehicle theft and smuggling racket, recovering 57 high-end stolen cars valued at over ₹30.5 crore, an officer said on Monday. Inter-state vehicle theft racket busted in Itanagar; 57 luxury cars worth ₹ 30 crore recovered This is the largest single recovery of stolen vehicles by a police station in India till date, he said. The police also arrested five people associated with the gang. Capital SP Jummar Basar told reporters here that the police registered a suo-motu FIR after receiving intelligence inputs about a sophisticated vehicle smuggling network operating across multiple states. The police also formed a Special Investigation Team to probe into the case. 'The operation commenced on July 2 and led to the recovery of 57 stolen vehicles from various parts of the Itanagar Capital Region. All the vehicles, mostly luxury and high-end models, were found to be linked to theft cases registered in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states,' Basar said. About the modus operandi of the gang, the SP said that its members primarily targeted expensive cars in Delhi-National Capital Region and adjoining states. After stealing the vehicles, the criminals partnered with brokers who tampered with engine and chassis numbers, created forged registration papers, and facilitated the vehicles' transport to Arunachal Pradesh. Once in the state, the cars were sold to unsuspecting buyers at prices well below market value. Preliminary investigations have revealed the possibility of international connections to the racket, the SP said. Basar added that certain digital financial trails and patterns in cross-border movement suggest the involvement of foreign handlers or transactions. 'This angle is currently under detailed investigation, and the police are working to trace the money flow and potential overseas links,' he said. Efforts are continuing to locate and apprehend the remaining members of the network, some of whom are believed to be operating from outside the state. The SP emphasised that more recoveries are expected as the investigation progresses. Basar also urged citizens to verify ownership history of vehicles via the VAHAN portal or through respective RTOs before purchasing any second-hand vehicle. He warned against buying vehicles without proper and genuine documentation and appealed to the public to immediately report any suspicious sellers or vehicles to the nearest police station.
