Ireland 'have to put right' scoring woes
'The France game, really we needed to win that one'
"I mean, it's definitely the closest we've got to beating Germany in competition over the last number of times that we've played them," said Ireland's Katie Mullan."Really, really proud of the fight we put up. To come back from a really disappointing performance against France and go out there and fight as hard as we did. We had some really, really good chances."You know, the reality is that the France game, really, we needed to win that one."That would have made life a lot easier but that being said, we had our opportunities and we fought really hard against a good German side."There are usually small margins at this level between success and failure. In the opening quarter against France, Mullan was one of three Irish players to hit a post. Had one or more of those crept a few inches to the right or left then perhaps Ireland go on to win.Against Germany there was a penalty stroke saved early in the game that was a pivotal moment."We just had to wipe that slate clean from the French game and go out there and chase two goals, and that's what we did," added Mullan."I mean, yeah, there's a stroke, but there's also a number of penalty corners again."We didn't get the rebounds on off the keeper and there's a number of ways we could have scored those two goals today."We just have to go back to the drawing board on looking to get that ball in the back of the net because to have scored no goals this far into the tournament, you know, it's something we have to put right."
'It's a test of character'
Ireland also mis-fired on 22 short corners in the three games, a horrible statistic and one that means you simply won't win games at this level."We put a huge emphasis on penalty corner attack. We put the time in, we put the effort in, we put the analysis in. It's all there."Sometimes you need a couple to click, and then you just build confidence after confidence and they all start going in."It's not an ability thing, for sure. We have the ability. It's not a technical thing, we have the technical side and we have the corner calls there."So yeah, we just need to find the back of the net on a couple and I believe then they'll start, they'll start on a roll."The tournament isn't over for Ireland and their remaining games in the 5th-8th bracket are an opportunity to put those scoring issues to bed, especially as they look forward to making their debut in the FIH Pro League later this year. There, Ireland will take on the best in the world and goals will surely be at a premium."We've got to step up to that level," added Mullan. "We have to split the tournament in two - part one's done, start part two now and if we have two solid performances and two good results, we'll get on the plane happy."It's a test of character for this group."

Richardson and Bjergfelt set world records in Turkey but Tanfield misses out
British duo Matt Richardson and Will Bjergfelt both set world records in Turkey on Thursday. Richardson became the first man to go under nine seconds in the 200m flying start, recording a time of 8.941sec at the Konya Velodrome. The 26-year-old, who switched allegiance from Australia to Britain in December, surpassed the previous record set by Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands. Richardson said: 'I did it. I came here to do that, and that's what I did, so it's a pretty cool feeling to accomplish the one thing that I came out here to do. A bit of relief there. It was a lot faster [than I've previously ridden], I was basically just a passenger. I gave the bike a bit of direction and it was just steering itself almost.' Bjergfelt, meanwhile, broke the men's C5 hour record, covering 51.471km in 60 minutes. Bjergfelt comfortably surpassed the previous mark of 47.569km, becoming the first para-cyclist to break the 50km barrier. 'I don't think it's quite hit home yet that I've smashed the world record on the track and that's a dream come true,' said the 46-year-old. Former Man United star has contract TERMINATED by Ligue 1 side - months after being linked with shock Premier League return
A former Manchester United star has seen his contract terminated by Ligue 1 heavyweights on the eve of the season. The Ligue 1 campaign kicks off on Friday night with PSG once again the heavy title favourites after winning the last four editions and adding the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup to their trophy cabinet. But one star will not be taking part after seeing his deal cut short just months before it was due to end. And while he is 37 years old, it opens a world of possibilities for his next move after he was linked with a return to the Premier League last season - albeit with now-relegated Ipswich Town. Florian Plettenberg reported that Ipswich were battling Napoli, Florentina and Como for his signature. Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic finds himself a free agent after Lyon pulled the plug on Thursday. Lyon posted a curt statement, writing: 'Nemanja Matic and OL end their collaboration. Thank you for all the great moments, Nemanja. Best of luck for the future.' Matic joined Lyon in January last year from Rennes and he made 55 appearances for them. No reason has been given for why Lyon have ended their time together. In June, Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 because of their financial plight, having announced debts of £422million last October. However, Les Gones appealed against their demotion and won, meaning they will play a 37th consecutive season in the top tier. That decision also led to Crystal Palace ultimately losing their place in the Europa League as the two clubs had both shared John Textor as an owner. Matic also found himself in hot water last season after being banned for two games for taping over a LGBTQ + logo during a match. He covered the rainbow-coloured Ligue 1 logo on his shirt against Angers on the final day of the season - part of the league's annual anti-homophobia campaign. Matic also hit the headlines for a high-profile spat with United goalkeeper Andre Onana, calling him 'one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history' ahead of their Europa League clash, after the custodian claimed the Red Devils were 'better than' the Ligue 1 outfit. The Serbian spent five seasons at Old Trafford, accumulating 189 appearances, although he was unable to build on the two Premier League titles, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup that he won with Chelsea. Midfielder Matic was an instrumental part of the Chelsea side which won the title under Jose Mourinho in 2014-15, then again under Antonio Conte in 2016-17.
