‘Poetica' celebrates over 125 Konkani poems at the scenic Bajpe

Mangaluru: A celebration of Konkani literature and culture unfolded at St. Anthony's Church in Bajpe on Sunday as the 39th edition of Poetica brought together more than 125 original poems and a vibrant display of coastal creativity.
Organised by the cultural association Ami Ani Amchim, the poetry gathering witnessed enthusiastic participation from renowned Konkani poets across coastal Karnataka and Goa. Over a hundred literary enthusiasts gathered to listen to recitations and performances that showcased the depth and diversity of Konkani verse.
Presiding over the event, parish priest Rev Fr Francis Rodrigues lauded the efforts of Poetica and Ami Ani Amchim in promoting literature and fostering social dialogue. He said that such grassroots initiatives had taken up the mantle of nurturing regional languages and cultural heritage. Santosh D'Souza, central president of the Catholic Sabha and chief guest of the event, was felicitated for his contributions to the community. He praised the literary community's proactive role, observing that many of the responsibilities that ideally rest with the government are being fulfilled by cultural organisations and independent writers. The event was led by Poetica president Naveen Pereira (Surathkal), along with Ami Ani Amchim president Denis D'Silva and Secretary Santosh D'Costa. Noted Konkani poets George Ligouri D'Souza (Surathkal) and Lloyd Rego (Taccode) chaired the poetry sessions.
Among the poets who presented their work were Jossey Pinto (Kinnigoli), Guadalupe Dias (Goa), Roshan Castelino (Paladka), Fr. Francis Rodrigues (Antonikatte), E.D. Cardoza (Taccode), Maccha Millar, Maria Pinto (Kulasekhar), Maxin Rodrigues (Bondel), Saraswati Naik (Goa), Godwin Pinto (Bejai), Raymond D'Cunha (Taccode), Richy Pereira (Derebail), Stanislaus D'Souza (Kirem), Edward Lobo (Thokkottu), Pedro Prabhu (Taccode), Lavy (Ganjimath), Henry Mascarenhas (Ganjimath), Lancy Sequeira (Surathkal), Remy (Katipalla), and Lawrence D'Souza (Surathkal), among others.
The evening also featured cultural performances by the Rang Tarang Madanthyar troupe, who performed traditional Konkani songs that received an enthusiastic response from the audience.

Panaji: A film facilitation portal, which serves as a single-window clearance system for online film shooting applications, was launched by the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) on Sunday. All those who wish to get permits and NOCs for film shootings can visit the website, which will be live from Sep 1. 'The ESG is willing to guide the filmmakers through the process,' said chief minister Pramod Sawant. 'We will also revise the Film Financing Scheme and re-release it wherein financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 30 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh will be granted based on the category of films. In addition, film restoration of Konkani and Marathi films made in Goa in the past 75 years needs to be executed by the ESG so that we can screen them during the centenary celebrations of the Konkani film industry,' he said. Speaking at the event, chief guest Varsha Usgaonkar urged the govt to give incentives to Konkani producers of Rs 40-50 lakh. Panaji: The Goa State Film Festival 2025 was inaugurated on Thursday by chief minister Pramod Sawant , marking a milestone as the Goan film industry celebrates 75 years of cinematic heritage. The festival, running from Aug 14 to 17, features a line-up of 19 films along with workshops and events designed to nurture aspiring filmmakers. In his opening remarks, Sawant emphasised the festival's role as a platform for budding talent in the Konkani film industry. 'This festival is a great opportunity for those who aspire to join the Konkani film fraternity,' he said. Highlighting the vast potential of Goan artistes, Sawant expressed optimism about their ability to break into larger film industries. 'Goans have the talent to go to Bollywood and Hollywood. We only need to give them finishing lessons,' he said. 'Plans are afoot at honing skills, with drama schools opening at Bal Bhavan and Kala Academy, and acting lessons being introduced in schools across Goa,' he added. He also urged filmmakers to explore and showcase Goa's lesser-known natural locations in Konkani films. Delilah Lobo, vice-chairperson of the Entertainment Society of Goa, voiced the organisation's ambition to position Goa as a capital of art and culture through hosting premier festivals. 'From 1950 till date, many Goan artistes and filmmakers have made us proud. We want to attract quality tourists by making Goa a hub for cultural events,' she said. The festival's chief guest, South Indian comedian Mohammad Ali, who boasts a prolific career spanning 47 years and 1,265 films across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, and Nepali cinema, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with Konkani cinema. 'I would love to do a film in Konkani. Only Indian actors can do films in multiple languages and even in Hollywood,' he said. The Sahitya Akademi is organising a birth centenary seminar on the life and works of V.J.P. Saldanha (Khaddap), eminent Konkani novelist and journalist, in collaboration with the Konkani Institute, St. Aloysius (deemed to be university) and Vision Konkani, Mangaluru, on August 13 and 14 here. The seminar will be held at the Robert Sequeira Hall, St. Aloysius (deemed to be university), said a release. As part of the seminar, the Akademi is organising a book exhibition cum discount sale till August 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sahodaya Hall on the St. Aloysius campus. Books in Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, English and Hindi will be exhibited.
