Data breach at NIT-K, accounts files missing from computer server

The Director of the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, has complained that some data related to the finances of the institute were missing from the computer server, and demanded action against those responsible. In the complaint to Surathkal police on July 9, B. Ravi said that, at 3.30 p.m. on June 9, staff of the accounts department noticed that some crucial files were missing from the institute's accounts server at the Office Computer Centre on the first floor of the main building. The missing data affected over 7,500 teaching staff, non-teaching staff and students. This happened at the end of 2024-25 financial year and in the beginning of the financial year 2025-26. The staff of the institute's MIS (Management Information System) section, which is the custodian of login and passwords of the server, assessed the data breach. An internal committee comprising teaching staff from the institute's Computer Science/Information Technology departments, and an external committee of cyber security experts were formed to retrieve the lost data, and also to carry out a preliminary investigation into the data breach. After identifying the computers and logins used to erase the data, the two committees securely locked the main server and also the suspicious computers. The external committee submitted a report on June 20 while the internal committee submitted its report on June 30, wherein user ID of the suspicious computers used to breach into the accounts server of the institute was mentioned. The complaint was registered under Sections 43 (penalty and compensation for damage to computer, computer systems), 66 (c) (identity theft) and 66 (d) (cheating by personation using computer systems) of Information Technology Act and under Section 318(2) (cheating) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Regarding reasons for the delay in reporting the data breach, the First Information Report (FIR) stated: 'It was due to data recovery, re-starting of financial operations and preliminary investigations, which took nearly three months.' The police said they were going through CCTV footage of the institute and collecting other evidences to trace the culprits.

Action committee warns intense protest over bad condition of NH stretch

Mangaluru: The Action Committee Against Toll Gate, Surathkal, has warned of intense protests if the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) does not fill potholes on the Surathkal–Nanthoor highway stretch. "Every monsoon, potholes appear in rows on the Surathkal-Nanthoor National Highway stretch, posing a threat to two-wheeler riders. This time, dangerous potholes appeared on the highway with the first rain. The first casualty has already occurred, and it is uncertain how many more precious lives will be lost here. No one seems to care about this," stated Muneer Katipalla, coordinator of the action committee. A resident of Janatha Colony in Surathkal, who was travelling on his two-wheeler near Panambur, fell into a pothole and was run over by a tanker coming from behind and died last night, he said. "We have been raising our voices from the action committee to repair this highway fully before the monsoon and prevent such tragic deaths. After putting forward this demand and urging the people's representatives, we held a peaceful protest in Kuloor, for which an FIR was filed against us. Despite this, we continued our fight within our limits. Now, a prelude to the series of deaths caused by highway potholes this monsoon has been written," said Muneer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tragically, instead of inspecting the dire condition of the national highway and taking steps to fill the potholes, people's representatives are busy with vote bank politics. People's representatives should wake up and take immediate steps to fill the numerous potholes on the highway. Otherwise, a procession of deaths on the highway will occur this monsoon, he said. "Do not compel us to engage in intense protests. Also, ensure that the highway authority provides compensation to the bereaved family of the deceased," Muneer urged.
