David Wright Sends Clear Message With Mets Facing Francisco Lindor Decision

Yahoo14-05-2025

Francisco Lindor is off to a hot start for the New York Mets, slashing .310/.374/.512 with nine homers and 26 RBI. The Mets (27-15) acquired the star shortstop from the Cleveland Guardians along with Carlos Carrasco for Andrés Giménez, Josh Wolf, Isaiah Greene, and Amed Rosario in January 2021, and the organization has been in a better place ever since.
New York hadn't made the playoffs since 2016 before that trade, but since made the Wild Card in 2022 and the NLCS in 2024. It also won two games in the latter series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who went on to win the championship.

"I think that they feed off of Francisco," the seven-time All-Star said. "Everything from the way he carries himself to the energy to, to the electricity, to his smile. I think that's contagious, and I think fans have kind of fed off of that."
"He's always rooting on his teammates...I think that's infectious, and the fans see that," he continued. "It's a team that they can really get behind."
The Mets haven't had a captain since Wright in 2018, but the retired star's comments can only help Lindor's chances of becoming the next one. However, he must compete with other stars like Pete Alonso and Juan Soto, as well as long-tenured team members like Brandon Nimmo.

Lindor was the captain of Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and will reprise the role in 2026.

Guardians' Austin Hedges activated from 7-day injured list

SEATTLE (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians activated catcher Austin Hedges from the 7-day injured list prior to Friday night's game against the Seattle Mariners. Hedges, 32, was placed on the list retroactive to last Thursday after he was struck on the helmet on a backswing by the New York Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. during a game on Wednesday. It marked the fifth time Hedges — who is hitting .113 with three home runs and three RBIs this year— has been placed on the injured list because of a concussion across 11 MLB seasons. 'They're all very similar, at least my version of them," Hedges said. "Apparently there's a handful of different types of brain injuries, and mine have been pretty consistent just at least with the symptoms. So, it was nothing new for me. Luckily this one wasn't very bad and didn't take that long to get over it.' Hedges said his symptoms started to clear up roughly three days removed from the incident. He visited a specialist in Pittsburgh prior to joining the Guardians in Seattle, one which he had worked with during his first stint in Cleveland from 2020 to 2022. Hedges said he was appreciative of the Guardians not rushing him back to play too quickly. 'We have such an amazing staff, and they're always looking out for all of us," Hedges said. "But, I felt like we handled everything perfectly and just happy that it was the minimum amount of time.'

The Mets' second MVP might be the fellow who brought back Alonso, owner Steve Cohen, who's paying Alonso $30 million (never mind the $33M in luxury tax). But the third MVP just might be a more anonymous fellow, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, who's the leader of baseball's best and most surprising pitching staff. The Mets' starting rotation was supposed to be the question mark of an otherwise strong team, especially after their two highest-paid starters — Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas — went out with injuries in spring. Just to be clear: That's only my MVP thought. It's definitely not from Hefner, who emphatically batted back the idea of him as team MVP candidate.

David Stearns, Mets still trying to solve third base ‘carousel and puzzle'

Try it free When it comes to third base for the Mets, there are many pieces to the 'puzzle.' Gone are the days when David Wright manned the hot corner night in and night out. As team president of baseball operations, David Stearns, put it, it's a 'carousel' in 2025. 'It's a constant discussion — the playing time carousel and puzzle is one that you're always talking about,' Stearns said before Friday's series opener against the Rays at Citi Field. 'We've got a bunch of good players on the infield, a bunch of good, young players on the infield.' 3 New York Mets shortstop Ronny Mauricio (10) makes a throw during the fourth inning on June 11. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Twenty-five-year-old Mark Vientos appeared to be the man for the job last season, primarily playing at third as he appeared in 111 games and posted a 3.1 WAR, which ranked second on the team. But with a hamstring injury sidelining him, it's been the Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio show for the most part. Luisangel Acuña often has been the odd man out. Manager Carlos Mendoza thinks there's more to his decisions than just a direct player-to-player debate. Check out more newsletters 'With the 13 position players that I got, it's not so much of the Mauricio-Baty conversation. I think it's just more looking at what's coming up next,' Mendoza said Friday. 'It's not so much the Mauricio-Baty; with the way our roster is constructed right now, there's so much versatility and there's a lot of different ways I can go.' Mendoza added that it doesn't simply come down to opposing pitchers and matchups when choosing his infielders. With the sheer number of options available, it can be a challenge to get all of their young pieces experience, which Stearns addressed. 'I'm actually pretty pleased with how they've all gotten a fairly substantial amount of playing time over these first couple of months in the season,' he said. 3 Brett Baty reacts after he strikes out looking in the fourth inning against the Colorado Rockies on June 1, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Allocation of playing time will soon become even more difficult when Vientos makes his return. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Vientos, who took swings during batting practice Friday, said his hamstring is 'feeling a lot better.' 'I'm pushing for the next couple weeks, I'm thinking,' Vientos said. 'We're heading in the right direction, for sure.' 3 Mark Vientos reacts after he hits a double during the fourth inning when the New York Mets played against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Citi Field. Robert Sabo for NY Post With his return drawing nearer, a tough conversation arises — one that likely puts somebody back in Triple-A. 'When Mark comes back, we're gonna have to make another decision about how to allocate that playing time,' Stearns said. 'But we'll make that decision when we need to.'
