Galesburg Fire Department ranks #2 in state for Fill the Boot fundraiser
The department ranked second in Illinois for dollars collected in the 2024 Fill the Boot Campaign. Generous donors helped raise $31,157.11 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Galesburg placed second in the state of Illinois for the amount they raised.
'I am incredibly proud of the Fire Department for their selfless dedication to helping others, and deeply thankful for the community's continued support,' said Fire Chief Randy Hovind.
The annual Fill the Boot Campaign supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which works to fight muscular dystrophy, ALS and related neuromuscular diseases. Funds raised through Fill the Boot directly support MDA's work, including research, comprehensive care and advocacy. MDA is the largest non-governmental source of funding for neuromuscular disease research, which has led to approved, life-changing therapies. MDA supports care centers at top health care institutions and gives thousands of kids and young adults the chance to attend MDA Summer Camp and other recreational programs at no cost to families.
The rankings for the most funds raised through the Fill the Boot Campaign are Chicago first, Galesburg second, and Orland Park, third. Galesburg was also in the top five earners within the IAFF 8th District, encompassing Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. The top five earners in the five-state region in order are Chicago; Cleveland; Kokomo, IN; Lafayette, IN; and Galesburg.
'This truly demonstrates what our community can achieve,' said Eric Hanson, City Manager. 'Thanks to the leadership of our Fire Department and the generosity of our residents, Galesburg was highly competitive both statewide and across the multi-state region.'
The Galesburg Fire Department participates in the Fill the Boot Campaign every year to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They're already planning the 2025 campaign and residents can watch for opportunities to give in person on the Friday before, during and after Labor Day weekend or donate here.

Charitable Impact Pays Tribute to NHL's Mark Kirton Following His Passing
Honouring a legacy of transformative action, resilience, and generosity through the ALS Super Fund Pictures of Mark Kirton, his family and Kevin Moorhead. VANCOUVER, BC, Aug. 19, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Charitable Impact today pays tribute to former NHL player and ALS champion Mark Kirton, who passed away on August 17, 2025. Diagnosed with ALS in 2018, Kirton transformed his personal battle into a movement of action uniting patients, donors, and the hockey community in pursuit of a cure for the disease. His enduring legacy is the work he did with ALS Action Canada, the country's only patient-led ALS charity, to launch the ALS Super Fund in 2023 in partnership with Charitable Impact. The Super Fund provides a collaborative way for donors to support research, improve equitable access to clinical trials, and amplify patient voices. Since its inception, it has raised more than $1.6 million, carrying forward the vision Kirton set in motion. 'Mark was awesome,' said John Bromley, CEO of Charitable Impact. 'He took action towards something he wanted to change, gave it his time and talent, and invited his network to participate. We can all do that. His legacy is not just about ALS or his family; it's about showing that to create change, you must act.' Determined to unite efforts across multiple charities, Kirton ignited a movement with the cause fund model that not only advanced his vision but also set a standard for collaborative philanthropy. 'The beauty of the ALS Super Fund is that it's not just all about donations and fundraising,' he once said. 'It's about patients coming together to have their voices heard to make a difference in the ALS world. And for donors, you don't have to be an expert to give where the need is greatest because a panel of experts will do that for you and report back on the progress.' As a Cause Leader, Kirton rallied a powerful network. With his wife and family as his foundation, he drew support from the hockey world and beyond. The Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment group (owners of the Toronto Maple Leafs) helped seed the Super Fund, and Jeff Jackson rallied NHL teams to the cause. Borje Salming, the legendary Leafs defenceman who also battled ALS, lent his support before his passing from ALS in 2022. Long-time friends like Ron MacLean and Daryl Sittler also stood by his side, moved by his action and commitment to making a difference. Though ALS gradually diminished his ability to move and speak, Kirton never lost his resolve. Rather than retreat, he became a relentless advocate for research and a cure. 'As I got to know him, I discovered he was one of the kindest, most driven, and most visionary people I've ever met,' said Kevin Moorhead, Senior Director of Cause Funds at Charitable Impact, in an online tribute to Kirton. 'Even as ALS took so much from him, he kept giving his time, his energy, and his voice to fight for others and to push for a future without this disease.' To honour Mark Kirton is to carry forward his spirit of giving by taking action, whether by giving to ALS or to any cause close to your heart. What matters most is that we keep giving, and together, we can keep his legacy alive and make a meaningful difference, just as he did. Struggle to get up for 9am classes? Here's the $50 sleep gadget I wish I'd known about
Thinking back to my time at college, one of the toughest challenges was waking up in time for 9am classes. Now, after reviewing sleep tech for a year, there's one stand-out gadget I'd recommend to make those early starts ten times easier. Enter: a sunrise alarm clock. The best sunrise alarm clocks I've tested this year are multi-functional devices complete with sleep audio tracks, authentic sunrise and sunset simulations and calming alarm sounds. From a student-friendly mattress to comfortable bedding, there are many things to invest in for better sleep at college (you can find our list of 35+ back to school sleep products here). But if you're looking for a gadget to elevate your nighttime and morning routine with a budget of $50, here's why I recommend shopping the Odokee sunrise alarm clock in Labor Day sleep sales... Odokee Sunrise Alarm Clock: was $59.99 now $49.99 at AmazonWith a student budget in mind, the Odokee sunrise alarm clock is a great option to shop now. With 17% off at Amazon, you can grab it for just $49.99 (down from $59.99). Compared with other quality sunrise alarms, it's affordable (the trending Hatch Restore 3 is $169.99 now ad requires a monthly subscription) and offers great value for a device that can function as an alarm clock, night light and bedside sound machine. There are 25 sleep sounds built in or you can pair it via Bluetooth to play your own snooze tracks. Amazon customers give it 4.5 out of five stars and say it delivers a "healthier, more pleasant wake-up experience" and is "worth every penny". It ships for free and Amazon Prime members can even get it delivered on the same day. User score: ★★★★½ (690+ reviews) A sunrise alarm clock not only makes waking up easier, but it is also scientifically proven to improve your mood and energy levels. A study by researchers at the University College of London found light exposure during the last 30 min of sleep can increase alertness and improve both cognitive and physical performance after waking - great news if you're heading off to class. The light gradually increasing over 30 minutes gently pulls you from sleep allowing you to complete your 90-minute sleep cycle before fully waking you with an alarm sound. Reaching the end of a sleep cycle rather than being jolted awake in the middle of one helps you feel less groggy upon waking. What's more, exposing yourself to sunlight (be it simulated or natural) first thing in the morning helps to align your circadian rhythm. In turn, your body will get used to producing alertness-enhancing hormones like cortisol earlier in the day and sleep-inducing hormones like melatonin come evening, so you feel switched on for classes and sleepy when it's time to wind down for bed at a reasonable hour. That could mean better grades and less time tossing and turning at night as you'll be able to fall asleep fast, even if your dorm room bed doesn't come equipped with one of the best mattresses. Hatch Restore 3: $169.99 at HatchIf you have the budget to splash, the aforementioned Hatch Restore 3 is the crème de la crème of sunrise alarm clocks, favored by our testers and TikTokkers alike. It boasts chic looks and connects to a mobile app where you can find an extensive library of sleep audio tracks from historical narrations to sleep meditations. Plus the sunrise and sunset simulations are sheer bliss. Do note, though, that you'll have to pay a subscription fee of $4.99/month to access all the features it has to offer. User score: ★★★★½ (3,300+ reviews)
