Where Miami Hurricanes stand in preseason polls, watch lists and All-America teams

Miami Herald2 days ago
The Miami Hurricanes enter the 2025 college football season with high expectations. They fell short of their ultimate goal last year despite reaching 10 wins for the first time since 2017.
As a result, the Hurricanes have received their share of hype and accolades heading into the season, which for UM begins on Aug. 31 with a marquee matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Hard Rock Stadium.
Here's a quick look at the preseason rankings and honors given to UM and its players heading into the season.
The Associated Press' preseason top 25 poll will be released at noon Monday, but other national outlets have the Hurricanes ranked in their preseason polls. Among them:
USA Today coaches poll: 10
This marks the first time since 2018 that UM opens the season as a top-10 team in the coaches poll.
Athlon: 10
What they're saying: 'The Hurricanes won the offseason thanks to the arrival of another standout recruiting class, along with a transfer portal haul that addressed several weaknesses. The biggest acquisition was Georgia's Carson Beck to replace No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Cam Ward at quarterback. Beck suffered a significant elbow injury in the SEC Championship Game but is on track to return for the opener. With a young receiving corps, Miami may need to lean on its offensive line and ground game to carry the team early on. Improving the defense was head coach Mario Cristobal's biggest offseason priority. New defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman directed one of the Big Ten's top defenses at Minnesota, and transfer reinforcements are coming to bolster a leaky secondary.'
Lindy's Sports: 10
What they're saying: 'Can Mario Cristobal enter college football's coaching elites? Stubbing his toe against Georgia Tech and Syracuse last November were colossal mishaps that kept the Hurricanes out of the playoffs — even with the eventual No. 1 overall pick at quarterback. Georgia transfer quarterback Carson Beck is an ideal replacement for Cam Ward and the offense will score a ton of points with Shannon Dawson again calling the shots.'
The outlet continues to say that UM's games against Notre Dame, Florida and SMU 'will show where Miami fits into the national picture' but that the Hurricanes also will 'have to avoid the toe stubbers.'
Phil Steele: 14
What they're saying: 'Don't sleep on a Mario Cristobal squad as they have talent and will fight you. Last year a late loss cost them a berth in the ACC title game and a shot at the playoffs. They learned from that lesson and this time last year Carson Beck was a higher rated prospect than Cam Ward.'
Nine Hurricanes players have been named to watch lists for national awards.
Quarterback Carson Beck leads the way with preseason recognition for three awards: Walter Camp Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award (national player of the year) and Davey O'Brien Award (top quarterback).
Offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa is the only other UM player named to multiple watch lists, landing on both the watch lists for the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman) and Wuerffel Trophy (the player who 'best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement').
The other seven to be named to watch lists: Defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr. (Bronko Nagurski Trophy, best defensive player), offensive lineman Anez Cooper (Outland Trophy), linebacker Wesley Bissainthe (Butkus Award, best linebacker), wide receiver/kick returner Keelan Marion (Paul Hornung Award, most versatile player), center James Brockermeyer (Rimington Trophy, best center), tight end Elija Lofton (Mackey Award, best tight end) and long snapper Adam Booker (Patrick Mannelly Award, best long snapper).
Mauigoa and Marion are the only UM players who received preseason first-team All-America recognition.
Mauigoa landed on first team by Sporting News, Walter Camp and Athlon, while also getting second-team recognition by Lindy's Sports and third team honors from Phil Steele.
Marion earned preseason first-team honors as a kick returner by Sporting News, Phil Steele, Walter Camp and Athlon.
Bain was a preseason second-team All-American by Sporting News, Lindy's Sports and Athlon while also being named to third team by Phil Steele. Cooper, meanwhile, was named a fourth team preseason All-American by Phil Steele.

Notre Dame football offers 2027 4-star Georgia running back Caden Wayne on Monday night

There are only a few teams that have the luxury that Notre Dame football has with recruiting at the moment, as its 2026 class is virtually complete and they have been able to really put their focus on the 2027 cycle. Multiple offers have been sent out already, and with three commitments, the Irish are off to a great start. On Monday evening, they offered yet another potential star in 2027 Georgia running back Caden Wayne. The 5-foot, 11-inch and 185-pounder is ranked as the No. 140 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite. Notre Dame has joined schools like Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and USC in their pursuit of Wayne. It is a bit interesting that the states top school, Georgia, has yet to pull the trigger with an offer, but maybe they now that he doesn't want to stay home to play at the next level. During his sophomore year, Wayne was a monster on both sides of the ball, accounting for 1,397 all-purpose yards with 18 touchdowns and 51 tackles with 4 interceptions. Notre Dame loves these kind of athletes, one that show that they'll do whatever it takes to help their team win. Wayne has yet to make a visit to South Bend, as he took trips to see the Bulldogs, Buckeyes, Ducks and South Carolina during the spring. If the Irish are able to get him on campus this fall, theres a good chance that Notre Dame can win out in his recruitment. Miami's Carson Beck and Oklahoma's John Mateer head list of prominent players switching schools

After an injury kept him from competing in the College Football Playoff last year, Carson Beck wants to get back to that stage with a different school. Beck made one of the biggest transfer portal moves of the offseason when he left Georgia for Miami. Beck's decision came after he hurt his elbow in Georgia's Southeastern Conference championship game victory over Texas, ending his 2024 season prematurely. Beck was regarded as a likely first-round pick in the 2025 draft when he began the 2024 season. Beck announced in late December that he would enter the draft, then he changed his mind and opted to return to school at a different campus. 'I think that this decision is one of the better decisions I've made,' Beck told reporters at the Atlantic Coast Conference media days event. 'Since I've been here in January developing the relationships and building the chemistry between me and the wide receivers, the running backs, the tight ends, the o-line and just trying to develop those relationships and that camaraderie, it just reinforced my decision in a positive way.' Beck's first game with No. 10 Miami will come Aug. 31 in a Sunday night matchup with No. 6 Notre Dame, a team he would have faced in last year's playoff — a 23-10 Georgia loss — if he hadn't hurt his elbow. Beck follows Cam Ward, who also transferred to Miami and played well enough for the Hurricanes to go to the Tennessee Titans with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. Beck noted that he's accustomed to having big shoes to fill, as he became Georgia's starting quarterback after Stetson Bennett led the Bulldogs to consecutive national championships. At Georgia last year, Beck completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. That followed a 2023 season in which he completed 72.4% of his throws for 3,941 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. He didn't throw the ball at all during spring practice for Miami but says he is now at full strength. Other notable players at new schools (former schools in parentheses): Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey (Stanford) Pro Football Focus has Bailey as the highest-rated returning edge rusher in college football. Bailey collected seven sacks and forced five fumbles for Stanford last season. He had 15 sacks, 11 quarterback hits and 65 hurries over the last three seasons. His seven career forced fumbles put him in a tie for second place among all active Football Bowl Subdivision players. Notre Dame WR Malachi Fields (Virginia) Notre Dame reached the College Football Playoff championship game last season without anyone having more than 592 yards receiving. Fields should help. He had 55 catches for 808 yards – more than twice as many as any of his teammates – and five touchdowns in 2024. Fields caught 58 passes for 811 yards and five scores in 2023. UCLA QB Nico Iamaleava (Tennessee) Iamaleava helped Tennessee get to the playoff last season, then left the Volunteers to join a UCLA program that's coming off a 5-7 season. His transfer was one of the major stories of the offseason amid reports he wanted a bigger payday. Iamaleava said he simply wanted to be closer to Long Beach, California, where he grew up. He completed 63.8% of his passes for 2,616 yards with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 358 yards and three more scores last year. Oklahoma QB John Mateer (Washington State) Mateer backed up Ward for his first two seasons at Washington State before passing for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns with only seven interceptions last year. His move to Oklahoma allows him to continue working with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who was hired away from Washington State. Oklahoma is looking for Mateer to revitalize an offense that ranked last in the Southeastern Conference in yards passing per game and second-to-last in points per game last season. Duke QB Darian Mensah (Tulane) Mensah comes to Duke with three seasons of eligibility remaining after leading American Athletic Conference starting quarterbacks last season in yards per pass attempt (9.49) and completion percentage (.659). He threw for 2,723 yards with 22 touchdown passes and six interceptions last season while helping Tulane reach its conference championship game. Oregon S Dillon Thieneman (Purdue) Thieneman had a spectacular freshman season in 2023 that earned him Associated Press All-America third-team honors. He picked off six passes to tie for third among all Bowl Subdivision players and collected 106 tackles that year. He had 104 tackles last season to lead all Big Ten defensive backs. ___

Third Georgia defensive back shuts down his recruitment

Another Georgia Bulldogs recruit has announced he's staying with Georgia. Class of 2026 four-star safety commit Zech Fort shut down his recruitment. This news is hardly shocking. Fort has been beating the drum for other recruits, such as Breck Kojolay, Preston Carey, and Zykie Helton, to come to the Georgia Bulldogs. Fort is teammates with Preston Carey at IMG Academy and Georgia has had a long list of IMG Academy alumni that played for the Bulldogs such as Nolan Smith Jr. and Ellis Robinson IV. Fort was one of the first recruits to commit to Georgia, committing in January, and now he's taken a step to cement his spot on Georgia's roster in 2026. Fort is the No. 11 safety prospect and No. 133 recruit in the nation. He was on the Polynesian Bowl roster and Under Armour All-American Game roster. While there, he was probably persuading many recruits to commit to Georgia. Georgia has the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation and the biggest part of their 2026 recruiting class is their secondary. Georgia has seven commits in the secondary, with five four-stars and two three-stars. Defensive backs Justice Fitzpatrick and Jordan Smith have already shut down their recruitment too.
