UK air traffic control operator says 'technical issue' briefly caused flight delays

Yahoo4 days ago
LONDON (AP) — A technical issue briefly caused flight delays in Britain on Wednesday before engineers were able to restore the system, the air traffic control operator said.
The National Air Traffic Service, or NATS, said the glitch happened at its control center at Swanwick, southwest of London, and required the service to limit the number of aircraft flying to ensure safety.
Gatwick Airport said the issue affected outbound flights across the U.K. Some inbound flights were put into holding patterns or diverted.
About 20 minutes after issuing an initial alert, the agency said engineers had fixed the problem and that it was 'in the process of restoring normal operations.'
The NATS system has suffered several software-related failures since it opened in 2002.
In August 2023, a glitch meant flight plans had to be processed manually, rather than automatically. Hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled at the height of the summer holidays and some 700,000 passengers affected.

Birmingham Airport addresses 'kiss-and-fly' price hike as thousands sign UK petition

Birmingham Airport has defended hiking prices for drivers dropping off passengers outside the terminal in its so-called "kiss and fly" zone. Amid a huge public reaction to increases at airports across the country, the flight hub said it benchmarked fees at other sites and a free alternative was available. It issued a statement after new figures from the RAC revealed drivers dropping off loved ones at the terminal door faced the highest charges on record this summer with more than half of UK airports putting up their fees since last year. Charges at airport drop off areas increased at 11 UK airports, including Birmingham, Liverpool, London Heathrow, Edinburgh and Newcastle. READ MORE: How to watch Ozzy Osbourne's cortege procession from home ahead of funeral READ MORE: Birmingham Airport 'following Ozzy Osbourne petition closely' as fans say change would be 'huge' Birmingham Airport has one of the most expensive drop-off rates, with motorists charged £6 to drop loved ones at the terminal door in a 15-minute time period, a hike of £1 since last summer. A petition against "outrageous" drop-off charges has amassed more than 40,000 signatures, in what organiser Ripindeep Sandhu called a "frustrating but exploitative" system. Mr Sandhu said all UK airports should either eliminate drop-off fees or give passengers at least 15 minutes free to drop friends and family at the door. "More than half the UK's busiest airports have increased these 'kiss-and-fly' charges in the past year alone," said Mr Sandhu. "Gatwick, Bristol, Leeds Bradford, Southampton, and Stansted now demand up to £7 just to stop briefly near the terminal. Even Heathrow, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Liverpool have hiked their prices to £6 for ten to 20 minutes, while Cardiff introduced drop-off charges for the first time. "According to the RAC, Manchester and Luton are the worst offenders on a per-minute basis — charging £5 for just five minutes." He went on: "Yes, many airports offer free park-and-ride schemes, but these are often far from convenient — especially for elderly passengers, people with disabilities, or those with heavy luggage. "We're calling on UK airports and policymakers to reconsider this system. Options include eliminating drop-off fees altogether or offering at least 15 minutes of free access, following more customer-friendly models used abroad." Birmingham Airport told BirminghamLive its rates were managed in partnership with parking firm NCP. A spokesperson said BHX "regularly reviewed" prices and its free drop-off zone was around a ten-minute walk from the terminal. A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: 'In partnership with NCP, who manage our car parks, we regularly review and benchmark prices with alternative providers. In line with other UK airports, we increased fees at our drop off car parks back in 2024. "Individuals dropping passengers off can do so, free of charge, in our Drop Off car park so long as a stay does not exceed 10 minutes. This option is used by many of our passengers as it is only a 10 minute walk away to the terminal.'

Easy English Countryside Escapes to Pair With London

Hello, Sarah Rappaport here, your luxury reporter in London. In six weeks I'm getting married in my favorite place, the Athens Riviera, in a cliffside ceremony overlooking the Aegean Sea at golden hour. I can't wait! Of all the things I've learned planning a destination wedding, the biggest is that no matter how organized and on top of things you are, it's still going to cost (a lot) more than you think. Which is to say, this summer I've been staying put in London and exploring my own adopted hometown.
