Bessent, who oversees the tariff talks between Japan and the United States, arrived in Japan on Thursday and is set to lead the delegation participating in the United States' 'national day' at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo on Saturday.
Economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa, who is the chief tariff negotiator for Japan, will host the U.S. delegation in Osaka on Saturday.

Tokyo, Aug. 1 (Jiji Press)--Seven Japanese opposition parties jointly submitted a bill to the House of Representatives on Friday to scrap the provisional gasoline tax surcharge in November. On Wednesday, the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's LDP and Komeito agreed with four opposition parties, namely the CDP, Nippon Ishin, the DPFP and the JCP, to realize the abolition "as early as possible within this year." Ishiba Vows Thorough Explanation on Japan-U.S. Tariff Agreement
News from Japan Economy Aug 1, 2025 10:57 (JST) Tokyo, Aug. 1 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has vowed to provide Japanese industry circles with a "thorough explanation" on his administration's latest tariff deal with the U.S. government. Ishiba, at a meeting in Tokyo on Thursday, exchanged opinions with automobile industry officials about the agreement over U.S. tariffs on imports from Japan announced last month. Thanking the auto industry for its help over the additional U.S. tariffs on Japanese vehicles being halved under the agreement, Ishiba said, "Starting with the auto industry, our ministers will directly visit business operators to give a thorough explanation about the agreement." At the meeting, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Chairman Masanori Katayama, also chairman of Isuzu Motors Ltd., said that the tariff deal "has managed to ease the devastating impact (of the tariffs) that the Japanese automobile industry, including the entire supply chains, would otherwise have suffered." In order to cope with growing uncertainty due to protectionism and other factors, Katayama called for tax measures to stimulate domestic demand and support to maintain supply chains. SkyDrive demonstrates flying car at Osaka Expo
Japanese startup SkyDrive performed its first demonstration flight of a flying car for visitors at the World Exposition in the city of Osaka on Thursday. The Toyota, Aichi Prefecture-based company had originally scheduled the flight for the opening day of the Expo in April, but canceled it due to bad weather. It will hold demonstration flights on a daily basis until Aug. 24. During Thursday's demonstration, the flying car completed an approximately three-minute unmanned flight, ascending about 4 meters and then moving forward some 50 meters. "I am glad that we were able to confirm that it flies safely and that visitors were also able to see it," SkyDrive CEO Tomohiro Fukuzawa said. In addition to SkyDrive, Marubeni, a major Japanese trader, has also conducted demonstration flights of a flying car at the Expo.
