KARACHI:
Gold prices in Pakistan declined on Tuesday, reflecting a drop in global market rates. In the local market, the price of gold per tola fell by Rs2,700, bringing it down to Rs286,400, according to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA). On Monday, gold prices had also decreased, with the per tola rate falling by Rs300 to close at Rs289,100.
Globally, gold prices also experienced a decline early on Tuesday. According to APGJSA, the international gold rate was $2,741 per ounce, reflecting a drop of $26 during the day. However, gold prices rebounded from a dip triggered by a tech-led wider market sell-off, as increasing uncertainties over US President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs kept investor interest in the safe-haven asset.
Spot gold rose 0.4% to $2,751.66 per ounce by 1507 GMT. Gold had dropped over 1% in the previous session, marking its steepest decline since December 18, spurred by DeepSeek's low-cost, low-power AI model.
Adnan Agar, the Director of Interactive Commodities, noted that gold prices initially touched a low of $2,734, aligning with their earlier predictions. However, the market rebounded and is currently trading around $2,750 after reaching a high of $2,756. Agar highlighted that for the gold market to trend downward, closing below $2,730 is critical. "Without this, the market is likely to maintain an upward trajectory," he added.
He reiterated that while the market could potentially stabilise tomorrow, the US monetary policy announcement, expected late at night, will play a significant role in driving further gold price movements. If the market closes below $2,730, there's a chance it may revisit the $2,700 range. However, consistent rebounds from near $2,730 suggest continued strength in the gold market for now.
Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee experienced a slight depreciation against the US dollar, dropping by 0.04% in the inter-bank market on Tuesday. By the end of the trading session, the currency stood at 278.93, marking a loss of 10 paisa compared to the dollar.
As reported by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the rupee had closed at 278.83 on Monday. Internationally, the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc gained while the US dollar fell against major currencies on Monday amid a selloff in technology stocks as markets weighed the implications of a Chinese startup launching a free open-source artificial intelligence model.
China's DeepSeek rolled out a free AI assistant that it says uses lower-cost chips and less data, seemingly challenging a widespread AI bet that in the past has lifted shares of US technology stocks, especially chipmaker Nvidia.

India test-fires nuclear-capable Agni-5 missile amid US tariff tensions

India on Wednesday test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, a government statement said, in an apparent show of strength ahead of a threatened US tariff increase. The Agni-5 missile was successfully launched in India's eastern Odisha state, with authorities saying it "validated all operational and technical parameters." The test-fire came a week before US tariffs are set to double from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, unless India meets President Donald Trump's demand that it stop buying Russian oil. India last tested the Agni-5 missile in March 2024. New Delhi has deepened defence cooperation with Western countries in recent years, including in the Quad alliance with the United States, Japan and Australia as an apparent counter to rival China. But India's relations with China have warmed recently with several bilateral visits, and Modi is scheduled to visit Tianjin later this month in his first visit to the country since 2018. Agni, meaning "fire" in Sanskrit, is the name given to a series of rockets India developed as part of a guided missile development project launched in 1983. The Agni-5 employs technology that enables it to carry several nuclear warheads, so they can split up and hit different targets.

China considering yuan-backed stablecoins to boost global currency usage, sources say

China is considering allowing the usage of yuan-backed stablecoins for the first time to boost wider adoption of its currency globally, sources familiar with the matter said, in a major reversal of its stance towards digital assets. The State Council - China's cabinet – will review and possibly approve a roadmap later this month for the greater usage of the currency globally, including catching up with a U.S. push on stablecoins, said the sources. The plan is expected to include targets for usage of the Chinese currency in the global markets and outline the responsibilities of domestic regulators, they said, adding that the roadmap will also include guidelines for risk prevention. The country's senior leadership is also expected to meet for a study session as early as the end of this month, focusing on yuan internationalisation and stablecoins, which are gaining momentum worldwide, said one of the sources. In that meeting, senior leaders are likely to deliver remarks to set the tone for stablecoins and define the boundaries of its application and development in business, said the source. China's plan for the usage of stablecoins, if approved, would mark a major shift in its approach towards digital assets. The country banned cryptocurrency trading and mining in 2021 due to concerns about the stability of the financial system. China has long aspired for the yuan to achieve global currency status, akin to the dollar or euro, reflecting its weight as the world's second-biggest economy. However, its tight capital controls and its trillion-dollar annual trade surpluses have worked against that aim. Those restrictions are likely to be a key hurdle to the development of stablecoins as well, market participants have said. Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value. They are usually pegged to a fiat currency such as the U.S. dollar and are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens. The yuan's share as a global payment currency fell to 2.88% in June, its lowest in two years, according to payment platform SWIFT. In contrast, the U.S. dollar commanded a 47.19% market share. China places strong capital controls to manage flows in and out of the border, with a few connect schemes permitting capital to be deployed in some key offshore market such as Hong Kong. In the U.S., President Donald Trump backed stablecoins days after his inauguration in January and is establishing a regulatory framework that helps legitimise dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies. Their underlying blockchain technology enables instant, borderless and round-the-clock transfer of funds at low cost, giving stablecoins the potential to disrupt traditional daily money moves and cross-border payment systems. Financial innovation, specifically stablecoins, is viewed by Beijing as a promising tool for yuan internationalisation amid the growing influence of U.S. dollar-linked cryptocurrencies in global finance, said the sources. Details of the plan are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, with Chinese regulators, including the central bank, the People's Bank of China (PBOC), being assigned implementation duties, said the sources. The sources declined to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media. The State Council Information Office (SCIO) did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. The PBOC could not be immediately be contacted for comment outside of normal business hours. Major shift Stablecoins backed by the U.S. dollar currently dominate the market, accounting for over 99% of the global stablecoin supply, according to the Bank for International Settlements. In Asia, South Korea has pledged to allow companies to introduce won-based stablecoins and develop the necessary infrastructure, while similar initiatives are underway in Japan. The latest push comes amid mounting geopolitical tensions with Washington, and the growing use of dollar-backed stablecoins by Chinese exporters. Beijing's latest plans come after a Shanghai regulator last month said it had held a meeting for local government officials to consider strategic responses to stablecoins and digital currencies. In a recent interview, PBOC advisor Huang Yiping told local media that an offshore yuan stablecoin in Hong Kong is 'a possibility'. Separately, Hong Kong's long-awaited stablecoin ordinance took effect on August 1 and positions the Chinese-controlledterritory as one of the first markets globally to regulate fiat-backed stablecoin issuers. China's commercial hub Shanghai is also establishing an international operation centre for the digital yuan. According to the sources, Hong Kong and Shanghai will be the main cities to fast-track local implementation of the latest plan. China is expected to discuss expanding the use of yuan and possibly stablecoins for cross-border trade and payments with some countries at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit to be held Aug. 31-Sep. 1 in Tianjin, said the sources. The global stablecoin market is currently small at about $247 billion, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. However, Standard Chartered Bank estimates it could grow to $2 trillion by 2028.

PSX notches another record close above 150.5k

Bulls continued to maintain their firm grip over the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday as the KSE-100 index roared past 150.5k points, a historic high that came on the back of Moody's ratings upgrade for banks and encouraging corporate-sector earnings. Robust interest from local institutions in stock buying and a modest current account deficit for July also lent support to the stock market, which rose 820 points, or 0.55%, and closed the day at 150,591. 'Stocks closed at an all-time high after Moody's Ratings upgraded the local and foreign-currency long-term deposit ratings of five leading Pakistani banks to Caa1 from Caa2, following its recent decision to raise the country's sovereign rating,' commented Ahsan Mehanti of Arif Habib Corp. 'Upbeat data showing $284 million in current account deficit amid strong remittances, rising exports and rupee stability powered the market's record close,' he said. Market Snapshot – August 20, 2025 Unlock yesterday's market moves and stay one step ahead! #August20 — PSX (@pakstockexgltd) August 20, 2025 Topline Securities, in its report, said bulls showed no signs of fatigue at the local bourse, storming ahead to notch the intra-day record high of 1,490 points before settling at 150,591, up 820 points (+0.55%). The upward momentum was underpinned by better-than-expected corporate earnings and a strong liquidity push from local institutions, lifting the benchmark index to uncharted heights, it said, adding that investor confidence remained buoyant as market heavyweights attracted robust flows, reinforcing the bullish undertone. The rally was largely fuelled by index heavyweights including Systems Limited, Bank AL Habib, NBP, MCB Bank and Bank Alfalah, which collectively contributed 503 points to the upward trajectory. Market participation remained robust, with traded volumes surging to 668 million shares and traded value reaching Rs40.7 billion. The Bank of Punjab led the volumes as it saw 52.3 million shares change hands during the trading session, Topline added.
