Ben Johnson Addresses Huge Caleb Williams Controversy

Yahoo22-05-2025

I feel like I'm watching The Color Purple when Nettie told Mister, 'nothing but death can keep me from it.'
Really, it's not that dramatic, but I did feel like something wicked was trying to ruin the peace and tranquility attached to the Chicago Bears' offseason when excerpts of Seth Wickersham's book, American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback, leaked.

For those who are unaware, Wickersham's book seemed to expose the fact that Williams and his dad sought to circumvent the NFL's rules in an effort to avoid being drafted by the Bears ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.

This wasn't a situation where Johnson had to say anything. But he did anyway—on his own terms. He walked into the press conference and made sure Bears fans knew that he nor the organization was running to hide from the story.
Johnson addressed the controversy about the book without being asked.
'It's come to my attention that the quarterback's been out in the media over the last week, Johnson said. 'And just to get out in front of that a little bit, I just wanted to say I wasn't here last year. And so I can't speak too much in terms of what it was like before he got here and when he got here last year. But from my four months on the job, he's been outstanding to work with and we just are focusing on getting a little better every day.'
Here is a look at the segment from Johnson's presser.
Let's be frank, no Bears fan is thrilled to learn that Williams didn't want to be a part of the organization. However, that was then, and this is now.

He's a part of the team and based on his on-field actions, Williams hasn't behaved like a guy who wants out. Johnson has asserted himself as the kind of leader every quarterback should want to play for, and all will be well if the upcoming season is a success.
As for Williams' dad, we need not worry about that too much. As young players get older and mature, the opinions of their parents still matter, but they don't shape the player's decisions as much as they might have fresh out of college.
If Williams is happy, successful and paid, he'll be fine. And the Bears will be too.

Three LSU baseball players who need to step up in super regional against West Virginia

Three LSU baseball players who need to step up in super regional against West Virginia Thanks to strategic moves from head coach Jay Johnson, LSU baseball advanced to the 2025 NCAA Tournament super regionals. Johnson switched one of his best hitters out of the two-hole and plugged in Ethan Frey, the team's hottest bat as of late, for the Tigers' rubber match against Little Rock in the regional round. The result yielded four hits, four RBI, and two walks from Frey. In addition to consistent at-bats from leadoff hitter Derek Curiel and Steven Milam, LSU knocked off the Trojans and earned the right to host West Virginia in the Baton Rouge Super Regional. At the plate and on the mound, multiple Tigers continued hot streaks at the right time. But who needs to step up their game in order for LSU to clinch a berth in the College World Series? These are the three LSU players who must improve their performances in the super regional. Jared Jones Jones underperformed this far in the postseason. He went five for 20 in the Baton Rouge Regional, including an 0-5 showing with three strikeouts against Dallas Baptist. Johnson moved the slugger to sixth in the lineup after he occupied the two-hole much of the year. With a trip to Omaha on the line, Jones needs to find his way out of his first large slump of the season. West Virginia's pitching staff, also seemingly hitting a low, gave up a combined 14 runs over the last two games of the Clemson Regional. Jake Brown Often the middle man of the lineup, Brown went quietly through the regional. He batted .250 with just one extra base hit, which followed a hitless SEC Tournament. Brown's slump follows a six-game hit streak to end the regular season, and he experienced some streakiness throughout the conference slate. He must channel the confidence he felt during the South Carolina and Arkansas series in mid-May. Zac Cowan Cowan can go nowhere but up after his postseason showing so far. Over his last 6.2 innings, his ERA is 14.85. In a start Monday against Little Rock, he exited in the second inning after allowing four earned runs on three hits and two walks. For most of the regular season, Cowan was the SEC's best reliever. He may have been out of his element on Monday and experiencing command issues as of late in his first postseason with LSU. The talent is still there and must come through if the Tigers need to keep a game within reach during the super regional.

Ravens GM confirms team is in 'introductory stage' of contract talks with Lamar Jackson

Ravens GM confirms team is in 'introductory stage' of contract talks with Lamar Jackson During an appearance on the BMore Baseball Podcast, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta confirmed that the team is in the 'introductory stage' of contract talks with Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson is a two-time NFL MVP and arguably should have won the award in 2024. Baltimore's 2025 NFL season is quickly approaching, and the Ravens' focus has shifted to reshaping the roster and preparing for a juggernaut of a schedule. The Ravens have made fifth-year option decisions on Kyle Hamilton and Tyler Linderbaum, while Jackson will have a cap hit of over $70 million for the 2026 season. During March's NFL owners' meetings in Florida, head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that Jackson is due for a new deal that will once again make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. That hasn't happened yet, but DeCosta, during an appearance on the BMore Baseball Podcast, confirmed that those discussions have started. 'We've had some conversations before the draft, after the draft, in person last week,' DeCosta said, via the team's website. 'I think we're in the introductory sort of stage of looking at what an extension might look like.' Last week, former sports agent and CBS Sports lead analyst Joel Corry masterfully broke down the leverage Jackson again holds over the franchise with his 2026 and 2027 cap hits being unworkable for the organization. The Ravens have more urgency for a new deal than Jackson although he has dropped to the NFL's 10th-highest-paid player after Brock Purdy's recent five-year, $265 million contract extension, averaging $53 million per year, with the San Francisco 49ers. Patience can be Jackson's best friend because his salary cap number jumps from $43.5 million in 2025 to an unmanageable $74.5 million in 2026 and also in 2027. The $74.5 million is 2026's third highest cap number. Fortunately for Jackson, Harbaugh conceded at the league meetings that Jackson was going to be put back at the top of the NFL salary hierarchy with his next contract. "The value is the top," Harbaugh said. "When Lamar gets paid, he's going to be the highest-paid player in football, just like he was last time. I think every contract he signs till he decides to hang up his cleats, he's going to be that guy." These dynamics give Jackson, who represents himself and has never had an agent, significant leverage in negotiations. He shouldn't think about twice about using the existing circumstances to his advantage. As Corry pointed out, Jackson just finished the second year of a five-year, $260 million contract signed with the Baltimore Ravens on May 4, 2023. Of this, $185 million is guaranteed, of which $135 million was fully guaranteed at signing. As of this article, Jackson is the 10th highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after Brock Purdy's new contract. Corry highlighted that based on recent trends with Dak Prescott and Josh Allen, Jackson can justify $65.5 million to $67 million per year" for a contract extension he signs in the coming months. With inflation and an adjustment for the 24.2% increase of the salary cap since he signed in 2023, Jackson could command upwards of $64.5 million per year.

Commanders' handling of Terry McLaurin offers a contrast in how NFC East rivals operate

Commanders' handling of Terry McLaurin offers a contrast in how NFC East rivals operate According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, Commanders WR Terry McLaurin exited a recent workout after growing frustrated with the team over the lack of progress on a long-term contract extension Terry McLaurin has been one of the best wide receivers in the NFL since being selected by Washington in the third round out of Ohio State. McLaurin has one year left on his contract, and he's looking for an extension after watching the team acquire Deebo Samuel and his $23,850,000 average salary from the San Francisco 49ers in an off-season trade. The veteran is the 16th highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL. With just $2,800,000 of his 2025 salary guaranteed, McLaurin recently exited a voluntary workout in frustration over the lack of movement on a new deal. McLaurin made his second Pro Bowl in 2024 after catching 82 passes for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. Even more remarkably, the 29-year-old has recorded at least 1,002 receiving yards in five consecutive seasons, and he hasn't missed a game since 2020. In contrast to how Philadelphia and GM Howie Roseman do business, A.J. Brown has signed two extensions since being traded to Philadelphia, and DeVonta Smith is in the top 12 in wide receiver salary.
