‘One of the darkest days…': Indian CEO recalls firing 25 employees in a day, reveals why he couldn't even say ‘I'm sorry'
Recalling the incident, Sachdeva said the management had instructed him to remain 'cold' and detached while breaking the news. He wasn't allowed to show sympathy or even say 'I'm sorry,' since it could be seen as taking responsibility. Instead, he had to stick to a script: 'Please submit your ID card and laptop. HR will reach out for formalities. Your system's access will be disabled shortly.'
What made the ordeal unbearable, he wrote, were the faces he had to look into while delivering the message. One that still haunts him is that of a single mother, seated across from him, trying to hold back tears. 'I saw the tear form at the corner of her eyes. And then, snap, it dropped.'
Sachdeva clarified that he had no part in deciding who would be laid off; he was simply the one chosen to deliver the decision. But that did little to ease the weight of the task. 'Try telling that to a father of two. To someone who just took a home loan. To the girl who had moved cities for this role,' he reflected.
One employee's response has stayed with him over the years. Without bitterness, the man told him: 'Sir, you had hired me. You were here, so I stayed. Today, you are asking me to go, so I will go.'
Once the task was complete, Sachdeva said he rushed out of the office and broke down, away from his team. 'That day, I didn't feel like a leader. I felt like a number. A face delivering a system's decision. And yet, I carried their faces with me long after.'
Now, years later, the memory still lingers. He admitted that while companies move forward and employees eventually rebuild their lives, some moments remain etched forever. 'Some days, when I sit quietly by myself, that single tear still haunts me. Because leadership is not just about making decisions. It's about learning to live with them.'
His post has triggered a wave of responses from professionals, with many sharing their experiences of layoffs, on both sides of the table, and reflecting on the often unseen emotional burden that leadership carries. An individual wrote, 'I can completely understand what you are going through Sampark, I had to do that twice in two years, and it broke me completely inside but this is the dark side of corporate world. Had to explain myself that I had to just do my job without any emotional feelings but the scar still remains.'
Another person commented, 'Layoffs may be a business reality, but the way they're handled leaves a lasting imprint on both sides of the table.'
A third individual wrote, 'This is a moving reflection on the human side of leadership. A reminder that every decision impacts lives far beyond the office walls.'

Postmen to seek OTP, payments via UPI as India Post steps up to compete with e-commerce couriers
Gurgaon: With India's fast-changing delivery landscape, the Department of Posts is working to soon launch sweeping reforms that will bring it closer in line with private courier companies and e-commerce logistics giants. Postmen delivering letters and parcels will now rely on mobile-based OTPs (One-Time Passwords) instead of signatures for verification, while customers will also be able to make payments through UPI, cutting down on cash transactions. Officials say the reforms are part of Advanced Postal Technology 2.0, a modernised framework already activated in the Gurgaon postal circle. The system integrates 5G-enabled tools, real-time tracking, and digital payment options—features long associated with private e-commerce companies and other courier firms. "With the new software, OTP-based delivery has started. This will enhance accuracy and minimise errors in parcel delivery," said Sumit Gad, senior superintendent of post offices, Gurgaon division. "The idea is to make India Post as seamless and transparent as any e-commerce logistics network," he added. Furthermore, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has also deepened its rural presence. Villages that once depended on money orders are today using Aadhaar-enabled banking, doorstep insurance, and digital payments via the postal network. Experts believe this renewed push will help India Post capture a bigger slice of the booming e-commerce-driven logistics market while retaining its traditional role as the trusted messenger for the people. Walmart share price: Walmart stock rises over 35 per cent, check price-to-earnings ratio
Walmart stock has gained nearly 37 per cent in the last 12 months, one of the notable non-tech companies leading a market that has largely sloughed off the effects of U.S. President Donald Trump's ongoing trade war. The broader Consumer Staples sector is up 4.5 per cent, trailing the broad-market S&P 500. Walmart's forward price-to-earnings ratio currently stands at 35.7, compared with an average of 25.5 over the past five years, suggesting investors expect growth. Its market value has soared to about $800 billion, per LSEG Datastream. Investors expect Walmart's management to strike a cautious tone on customer demand as the U.S. labor market cools and inflation ticks up, though the company has outperformed its peers over the last year due to its reliance on grocery sales and wealthier customers shopping there more often. Still, analysts say this environment is a sweet spot for Walmart, which reports second-quarter results on Thursday before markets open. Its low-price model and dominance in grocery can help it weather economic storms better than others. The world's largest retailer by sales has surpassed earnings estimates for 11 consecutive quarters, according to LSEG data, sending its valuation soaring even as other consumer staples companies have struggled this year. The company's May-to-July results are the most closely watched event among this week's retail earnings, following Tuesday's results from Home Depot and Wednesday's reports from Lowe's and Target. Its significance goes beyond retail; as one of the largest and most recognizable companies in the U.S., Walmart is viewed as a barometer for the state of the U.S. consumer. "Walmart essentially is middle America, so I'll be looking for cues from Walmart as to the health of the broader economy," said Charles Sizemore, a Walmart investor. Live Events U.S. shoppers remain resilient despite declining sentiment, but they are being increasingly selective about purchases and have shown signs of trading down. RBC Capital Markets analyst Steven Shemesh cautioned that Walmart may adopt a more cautious tone heading into the second half. Investors and analysts expect the retailer to report earnings of 74 cents a share, up nearly 11 per cent from a year ago, and revenue of $176.16 billion, up 4 per cent. Sales fell slightly short of expectations in Walmart's last quarter, but July's retail sales report bolstered analysts' confidence in current spending trends. FAQs Q1.
