Al-Ahram Weekly24-06-2025
Egypt has condemned a "treacherous terrorist attack" targeting innocent worshippers outside a mosque in Niger's southwestern village of Manda, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries,
According to a statement issued by the foreign ministry on Tuesday, Egypt reaffirmed its full support for the government and people of Niger in their fight against terrorism and extremism.
Egypt also offered its condolences to the victims' families and the government and people of Niger, wishing the injured a quick recovery.
The attack occurred on Friday, when suspected Islamic State-affiliated militants ambushed worshippers on their way to Friday prayers, in Niger's Tillaberi region, killing at least 71 people, according to AFP.
Egypt urged the international community to intensify efforts to support the Sahel countries in their war against terrorist organizations, and called for coordinated action to eliminate extremist strongholds and combat terrorism in all its forms.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents across Niger in recent week.
In May, a deadly attack by suspected Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) militants on a military outpost in Eknewan killed 41 Nigerien soldiers.
Moreover, in March, a terrorist attack targeted a mosque in the village of Fambita in southwestern Niger during Friday prayers, killing at least 44 people and injuring 13.

Egypt, UNDP discuss outcomes of joint projects, future environmental cooperation

Manal Awad, Egypt's Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, has met with Ghimar Deeb, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt, to review current and future cooperation between the ministry and UNDP. The discussions focused on the progress of joint projects, their successes, and the challenges encountered. The Saturday meeting was attended by Mohamed Bayoumi, Assistant Resident Representative of UNDP; Heba Wafa, Director of Local Development, Social Inclusion and Women's Empowerment Programmes at UNDP; Hoda El Shawadfy, Assistant Minister for Ecotourism; Soha Taher, Head of the Central Administration for Climate Change and International Cooperation; and Mona Shehab, World Bank Project Coordinator at the Ministry of Local Development. Awad reviewed a comprehensive presentation assessing the status of projects jointly implemented with UNDP. The evaluation covered project management mechanisms, progress achieved compared with planned timelines, challenges faced, and the measures taken to address them. The presentation highlighted joint projects in climate change and biodiversity, including Egypt's international reporting obligations—such as transparency reports, biodiversity reports, and national adaptation plans. These reports serve as key references for the ministry's work across areas including climate change, water, energy, agriculture, coastal protection and biodiversity. Among the reviewed implementation projects was the Green Sharm initiative in Sharm El-Sheikh, a major success story that followed Egypt's hosting of the Climate Conference. Another was the Red Sea Protection Project, which includes coral reef preservation and exemplifies long-term cooperation with UNDP in safeguarding Egypt's nature reserves. The Migratory Birds Protection Project—focusing on renewable energy projects, particularly wind farms—was also highlighted as a notable success. Awad emphasised the ministry's role as Egypt's national focal point for key UN-affiliated international financing mechanisms, including the Green Climate Fund, the Global Environment Facility, and the Adaptation Fund. Through these, the ministry supports projects for other ministries, such as the coastal protection project of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, funded by the Green Climate Fund—one of the largest in the Arab region. The ministry also plays a coordinating role in electricity sector mitigation projects, funded by the Global Environment Facility, as well as energy-efficient building initiatives. The meeting also reviewed ozone-related projects implemented in cooperation with UNDP and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), as well as progress on Egypt's National Adaptation Plan for Climate Change. Awad was briefed on projects supporting local communities in nature reserves, including the Gharqana Village initiative in the Nabq Reserve, South Sinai. The project offers services to residents and creates jobs for women, girls, and Bedouin communities through the production and marketing of handicrafts. She also discussed future tourism development in the area. She directed the adoption of specific development measures for Wadi Degla Reserve to strengthen its protection, preserve its natural resources, and boost ecotourism. In addition, she reviewed projects to support private sector participation in solar power plant development, particularly in Sharm El-Sheikh, stressing the importance of removing implementation obstacles to encourage wider reliance on renewable energy. In conclusion, Awad underlined the importance of sustained coordination with UNDP to accelerate progress and expand the scope of joint projects. She stressed that maximising the benefits of international partnerships is vital to meeting global challenges and reinforcing Egypt's position as a regional leader in environmental and climate action.

Trump warns of make-or-break chance with Putin as pressure mounts - War in Ukraine

Pressure mounted ahead of a landmark summit in Alaska between the United States and Russia, as Donald Trump warned that Vladimir Putin had only one chance but Moscow pressed ahead with major battlefield gains in Ukraine. Putin and Trump will meet Friday at an air base in the far-northern US state, the first time the Russian leader has been permitted on Western soil since his February 2022 invasion of Ukraine which has killed tens of thousands of people. With such high stakes, all sides were pushing hard in the hours before the meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has refused to surrender territory to Russia, spoke by telephone Wednesday with Trump, as did European leaders who voiced confidence afterward that the US leader would seek a ceasefire rather than concessions by Kyiv. Trump himself sent mixed messages, saying that he could quickly organize a three-way summit afterward with both Zelensky and Putin but also warning of his impatience with Putin. "There may be no second meeting because, if I feel that it's not appropriate to have it because I didn't get the answers that we have to have, then we are not going to have a second meeting," Trump told reporters. Russia, Trump said, would face "severe consequences" if it does not halt its offensive. But Trump said: "If the first one goes okay, we'll have a quick second one," involving both Putin and Zelensky. Putin pitched the meeting after Trump threatened sanctions on Russia. Trump has already ramped up tariffs on India, which has become a key buyer of Russian energy. Zelensky, after being berated by Trump at a February meeting in the White House, has publicly supported US diplomacy but made clear his deep skepticism. "I have told my colleagues -- the US president and our European friends -- that Putin definitely does not want peace," Zelensky said. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who welcomed Zelensky in Berlin, said Ukraine is ready to negotiate "on territorial issues" but stressed that legal recognition of Russian occupations "would not be up for debate." NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte declared: "The ball is now in Putin's court." Talks at Cold War base Trump will meet Putin on Friday at Elmendorf Air Force Base, a major US military hub in Alaska's most populous city of Anchorage that played a key role in monitoring the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Off the base, on the rainy streets of Anchorage, there were few signs that the world's eyes would soon be on the city, other than an influx of media who have booked up virtually all rooms. The US Treasury Department announced that it would temporarily ease sanctions on the visiting senior Russian officials, who normally would struggle to carry out simple transactions, such as withdrawing cash in Western countries. The most visible sign of the impending summit was in Ukraine itself. According to an AFP analysis of battlefield data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces made their biggest 24-hour advance into Ukraine in more than a year on Tuesday. The Russian army took or claimed 110 square kilometers (42.5 square miles) on August 12 compared with the previous day. Ukrainian soldiers in Kramatorsk, an eastern city about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the front, said they had low expectations for Trump's meeting with Putin. Artem, a 30-year-old serviceman, said the war would likely continue for "a long time." "Putin is massing an army, his army is growing, he is stockpiling weapons, he is pulling the wool over our eyes." Trump has long voiced admiration for Putin and had vowed to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of returning to the White House. But he has since voiced frustration as Putin ignores his pleas for a ceasefire and presses ahead with attacks on Ukraine. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
