Mexico's Sheinbaum says no agreement exists with DEA on 'Project Portero'
The DEA on Monday said in a statement it was launching a "bold bilateral initiative" with Mexico aimed at dismantling drug smuggling corridors.
"The DEA issued this statement, we do not know on what basis. We have not reached any agreement through any of the security agencies with the DEA," Sheinbaum told a morning press conference. "We do not know why they put out this statement."
Sheinbaum said Mexico's foreign ministry had been working for several months with the U.S. State Department on a security coordination agreement, which was now "practically ready" and provided a framework for coordination initiatives.
This agreement prioritizes sovereignty and "territorial respect, which is to say each of us operates in our own territory," she added.
A group of civil protection police officers have also been participating in a workshop in Texas, Sheinbaum said.
The DEA had introduced Project Portero as a "flag ship operation aimed at dismantling cartel 'gatekeepers,'" and a "major new initiative to strengthen collaboration between the United States and Mexico in the fight against cartels."
The DEA said it launched a multi-week training program at one of its intelligence centers on the southwest border, bringing together Mexican investigators and U.S. defense officials and prosecutors who would identify joint targets and coordinate strategies.
Some Latin American countries have a complicated relationship with the DEA and its interventions on Mexican soil have sometimes been criticized by the government as a violation of sovereignty.
Earlier this year, Washington designated some Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, prompting Sheinbaum to say she would not accept foreign interventions or intrusions that violate Mexico's independence.

Cesar Chavez Jr jailed after US deportation
Former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been jailed in his native Mexico after his arrest in the United States in July. The Mexican boxer was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Studio City, Los Angeles, five days after fighting Jake Paul in nearby Anaheim. The 39-year-old has now entered a prison in the northern Mexico state of Sonora, the country's national arrest registry showed on Tuesday. It said that the boxer was arrested at a checkpoint in the border city of Nogales on Tuesday morning and transferred to a federal institution in Sonora's capital of Hermosillo. Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum said in her daily news conference that he had been deported. She previously said there was a warrant for his arrest for charges of arms trafficking and organised crime, and that prosecutors were working on the case. The Mexican attorney general's office declined to comment. Chavez Jr, who held the WBC middleweight title from 2011 to 2012, is the son of three-weight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez. Mexican prosecutors allege he acted as a henchman for the powerful Sinaloa cartel, which Washington designated a foreign terrorist organisation earlier this year. The White House just joined TikTok a month before it's set to be banned (again)
The White House joined TikTok on Tuesday with a video montage of President Donald Trump. The US government previously voted to ban TikTok over national security concerns. TikTok faces a divest-or-ban deadline next month, though it's been extended several times this year. A lot can change in a year — just ask TikTok. Last year, the US government took the extraordinary step of voting to ban the popular app used by millions of Americans, citing national security concerns. On Tuesday, the White House became its latest user. The White House TikTok account launched with a video montage of President Donald Trump narrated by the man himself. "Every day I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation," Trump says over images of him with UFC head Dana White, law enforcement officers, and American workers. "I am your voice!" The account's second post featured various shots of the White House during different seasons. The White House joined the app less than a month before it's set to be banned in the US on September 17 unless it's sold to a US buyer, though that deadline has already been extended several times. "The Trump administration is committed to communicating the historic successes President Trump has delivered to the American people with as many audiences and platforms as possible," Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, said in a statement to Business Insider. "President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign, and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before." The White House did not respond to questions about whether the divest-or-ban deadline would be extended again or if a deal was expected by the deadline. Lawmakers in April 2024 voted to ban TikTok unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sold its American assets. Some officials cited concerns that sensitive data belonging to American users could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, and members of Congress have said it could be used for Chinese Communist Party propaganda. TikTok has said it does not share data with the Chinese government. The TikTok divest-or-ban law, signed by President Joe Biden last year, gave TikTok until January 19 to sell or risk shutting down. The app briefly went dark that day for US-based users before coming back online, with TikTok crediting Trump for its return. The White House has said the president does not want TikTok to go dark and prefers it be sold. Trump has delayed the divest-or-ban deadline three times since taking office in January. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNBC last month that TikTok will go dark again unless China agrees to a deal that will give Americans control over the app. "We've made the decision. You can't have Chinese control and have something on 100 million American phones," Lutnick said, adding that China's decision would be coming "very soon."
