[1] Bosque fire outside Socorro burning 200 acres – The Rio Rancho Fire Rescue Wildland team is working with Socorro County Fire to battle a bosque fire, just outside of Socorro. Crews with Rio Rancho deployed their dozer unit to help tackle the flames. Rio Rancho Fire says the fire is around 200 acres at last check.
[2] Project ECHO looks to help pregnant moms suffering from substance abuse – Project ECHO is working to break the stigma surrounding pregnant mothers who struggle with substance abuse. The organization is working with providers across the state to provide resources, information and support groups to help figure out the best course of action. Another issue Project ECHO addresses is the risk of newborns being born addicted to opioids. They also work with other healthcare groups to provide naloxone training throughout the state.
[3] Cooler & calmer weather, but possible fire threat for NM – Sprinkles are possible in far-southeastern areas and far-northwestern areas of the Four Corners with some wet snowflakes mixing in, but elsewhere, it will be very sunny. While it will only range from the upper 40s to the 60s this afternoon in northwestern areas, it will mostly reach the 70s and 80s in communities to the southeast with near 90-degree high temperatures in parts of Eddy County.
[4] Sexual Assault Helpline sees influx of calls across the state – A state helpline is working to provide survivors of sexual assault with immediate support. According to the New Mexico Crime Victimization Report, over 75% of New Mexicans affected by sexual assault are not making it to help. The New Mexico Coalition for Sexual Assault Programs launched a helpline in October. The line offers immediate culturally-sensitive help, including phone, text and online support to survivors. The helpline is able to provide services for several languages.
[5] Meals on Wheels holds fundraising event – Some special waiters were on hand for a recent dinner event for Meals on Wheels. Saturday, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman and state auditor Brian Colon helped serve guests their meals. KRQE's Van Tate also served at the event. The tips gathered by each server went to Meals on Wheels.

Officials say hundreds of homes damaged in Ruidoso flooding

RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – Ruidoso officials and New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham held a news conference in Ruidoso Thursday morning to give an update on Ruidoso flood response efforts. Ruidoso residents begin long road to recovery following historic flooding Gov. Lujan Grisham says that she is in talks with the feds about how much money may be made available for aid distribution. Authorities have been assessing the flood damage, and the number of damaged homes continues to rise, with officials saying 200 to 400 homes have been damaged. Officials said they had approximately 65 swift water rescues with people getting stuck in homes, cars, and trees. Many in the village are experiencing water outages as utility workers assess the damage. Drinking water is available at the Gateway Church, Wingfield Park, and at the Humane Society. Floodwaters reached as high as 20 feet hit the Village of Ruidoso Tuesday, and claimed the lives of three people, including two children. Gov. Lujan Grisham signed an emergency declaration Tuesday night in response to the flooding in Ruidoso. The emergency declaration requests federal response teams and repair resources to Ruidoso immediately. Areas hit the hardest include the Upper Canyon, Brady Canyon, Cedar Creek, and Paradise Canyon. With more rain expected in the region, state leaders are urging residents to stay vigilant. 'We will protect New Mexicans. But if you live here in Ruidoso, follow the emergency evacuation orders. We cannot lose another life,' said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-New Mexico). President Donald Trump signed an emergency declaration for New Mexico, which will help bring in millions of dollars to the region for flooding recovery and response efforts. There is a disaster recovery center set up at ENMU-Ruidoso, open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There, case managers can help with replacing documents, finding resources, and answering insurance questions. New Mexico Gov. declares emergency in response to Trout Fire

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued an emergency declaration on Tuesday in response to the Trout Fire near Silver City, which has burnt over 24,000 acres and led to evacuations across the area. Alongside the emergency declaration, Gov. Lujan Grisham has also secured Fire Management Assistance Grants to further assist with firefighting efforts in Grant County. Soldiers and Airmen of the New Mexico National Guard have been activated as well, with personnel from Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, Kirtland Air Force Base and Las Cruces helping with evacuations ordered last Friday. The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management is being allocated $750,000 by the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to request assets such as additional firefighting crews, fire engines, air support, sheltering assistance, and out-of-state other personnel. This is through Executive Order 2025-235. 'New Mexicans are all too familiar with the devastation that comes from wildfires that bring danger and destruction to everything in their paths,' said Gov. Lujan Grisham. 'I appreciate our federal partners for taking this threat seriously and for doing their part in supporting the responders who are working their hardest to protect the community.' New Mexico Lt. Governor Howie Morales said 35 New Mexico National Guardsmen and women will be on scene by the end of the day. He said there are no indications that structures are being threatened at this point, but power is being shut off to protect firefighters. 'When I drove through there yesterday, the smoke was pretty heavy. The air quality was causing a lot of respiratory issues. So there is generally just the fear that comes with fire and the uncertainty of it,' said Lt. Gov. Morales. More information on Fire Management Assistance Grants can be found here. By the #s: New Mexico's first triple-digit weekend ahead

Workers with Health Care for the Homeless offer water, education and treatment to unsheltered New Mexicans in Albuquerque in response to high heat risk. (Courtesy of Health Care for the Homeless / Sara Lucero) Parts of New Mexico will get their first encounters with intense heat this weekend, including projected temperatures of 103 and 104 degrees in Las Cruces. The temperatures will be dangerously hot in some places, according to the National Weather Service's Heat Risk Map. The map takes into account how unusual the heat is at a given time of year, how long it will last into the day and night and whether those temperatures pose a higher risk of heat-related impacts based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Local New Mexico officials told Source New Mexico earlier this week that they're monitoring for heat threats and ready to take action during extreme heat. Rio Rancho, Albuquerque and Las Cruces recently topped a USA Today analysis of cities with the largest increase of high-heat days — 90 degrees and upward — since 1985: 39, 36 and 31 more such days, respectively. According to the Heat Risk Map, areas in and around Las Cruces will be so hot that they'll turn from 'red' to 'magenta' beginning Monday, June 16. Areas can reach this 'extreme' level of heat with rare or long-duration extreme heat with little overnight relief. Heat at the 'magenta' level 'affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts likely in most health systems, heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure,' the National Weather Service warns. Despite the extreme temperatures predicted, local officials in Las Cruces told Source that, as of Wednesday, they did not plan to extend cooling center hours, unless a power outage or further needs arise. Heat of the Moment Doña Ana Assistant County Manager Steven Lopez said recent temperatures have not reached a threshold of 105 degrees on the heat index. The county requires those high temperatures for several days to provide additional cooling sites, he said. Dangerously hot temperatures forecasted in the coming days have nonprofit advocates and providers bracing for 'life or death' impacts to unhoused people in New Mexico's largest cities. Advocates said governments at all levels need policies, funding and data to better address the threat.
