Chery prices newly shocked plug-in hybrid Tiggo 8 CSH

The Citizen11-08-2025
CSH sports the same plug-in hybrid setup as sister brand Jaecoo's J7 SHS, but slots-in between the pair of combustion engined Tiggo 8 Pro Max models.
Chery has officially completed the roll-out of its CSH or Chery Super Hybrid models in South Africa with the arrival of the Tiggo 8 CSH.
Not the flagship
Joining the Tiggo Cross and Tiggo 7, the Tiggo 8 adopts the same plug-in hybrid configuration as the latter, but restricted to a single unbadged derivative which, surprisingly, isn't the local line-up's new flagship.

Positioned between the two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the Tiggo 8 Pro Max, the Tiggo 8 CSH doesn't adopt the 'Pro' suffix and as such, will be marketed as Tiggo 8 CSH as opposed to the Hybrid-e description used as its official preview launch in China two years ago.
Changes inside and out
Similar to the newly facelifted Tiggo 7, which takes leave of the 'Pro' and 'Pro Max' names, the Tiggo 8 CSH differs aesthetically from the combustion models by featuring a new grille with black surrounds, a restyled front bumper, standard Auto High Beam Assist LED headlights and new 19-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the differences continue in the shape of the same centre console as sister brand Jaecoo's J7, complete with a pair of wireless smartphone chargers, a rotary drive mode selector and two cupholders.
The rear facia has not undergone any changes. Image: Chery
With the gear lever moving to the steering column, Chery has also redesigned the Tiggo 8 CSH's dashboard by eschewing the dual 12.3-inch displays for a freestanding instrument cluster of the same size, plus a new 15.6-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The latter's inclusion has seen the central air vents move to the centre console, while the previous toggle switches and physical buttons on the steering wheel make way for touch-sensitive switchgear.
Space and tech
As with the rest of the Tiggo 7 range, the CSH keeps the seven-seat layout, with boot space ranging from 117-litres to 494-litres. Dropping the middle row results in space maxing out at 1 930-litres.
On the specification front, the Tiggo 8 CSH, bar the items mentioned, comes equipped with the following as standard;
three type-C USB ports;
12-speaker Sony sound system;
dual-zone climate control;
ambient lighting;
ventilated, heated, electric and massaging front seats;
imitation leather upholstery;
panoramic sunroof;
electric tailgate;
Head-Up Display
The interior has been revised for the CSH only. Image: Chery
The extensive array of safety and driver assistance system include;
540-degree camera system;
10 airbags;
front and rear parking sensors;
Driver Monitoring System;
Adaptive Cruise Control;
Hill Start Assist;
Rear Cross Traffic Alert;
Traffic Jam Assist;
Lane Departure Warning;
Front Collision Warning;
Blind Spot Monitoring;
Door Opening Warning;
Automatic Emergency Braking
Plug-in hybrid punch
On the power front, the Tiggo 8 CSH carries over the same powerplant as the Jaecoo J7 SHS, namely the brand's 1.5 T-GDI engine combined with an 18.3-kWh battery pack powering a single electric motor.
The result is a total system output of 255kW/525Nm, an electric-only range of 90 km, and a combined overall distance of 1 200 km. The claimed fuel consumption is 5.2 L/100 km.
Sending the amount of twist to the front axle is a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). In addition, three driving modes are offered; Eco, Normal and Sport.
Warranty
Now available, the Tiggo 8 CSH's sticker price includes:
seven-year/200 000 km warranty'
seven-year/90 000 km service plan'
10-year/1 000 000 km engine warranty transferred to the second owner only via the first owner having made the original purchase through the Cherished pre-owned dealer network;

Jaecoo J7 SHS: Value for money and range for weeks

Stylish and practical: The Jaecoo J7 SHS The It had everything we've come to expect from Chinese vehicles and the inclusion of a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine placed it above its competitors. The interior was also very comfortable. Jaecoo launched the J7 SHS — the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the J7 — in June and when I received it on test, I was excited to test just how far this car could take me on a single charge and one tank of fuel. It's always good to know that, so I can understand if it is worth paying the extra money for the PHEV over the internal-combustion engine (ICE) version. Usually, it's difficult to judge because the PHEVs come in far above the ICE variants. But with the Jaecoo J7, it's slightly different. It has three ICE variants: the J7 Inferno (R519 900), the J7 Glacier (R579 900) and the J7 Vortex which is an all-wheel-drive (R679 900). The J7 SHS comes in at R689 900, which is just R10 000 more than the top-of-the-range petrol variant, but it must be noted that the SHS is a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Jaecoo claims that the 18.3kWh battery pack will provide 90km of all-electric range and a combined range of over 1 200km. The interior of the Jaecoo J7 SHS To test it, I took the car on a few long journeys during the week that I had it. On the first day, I did my usual stroll around Bakerton in Springs just to get a feel for the car and, in the evening, I did my trip to Boksburg and back for padel. Nothing extraordinary, but I could feel that difference in power and a smoother driving experience in the short time I spent on the road. The Jaecoo J7 SHS has an electric motor that works with a four-cylinder 1.5 litre engine to produce 255kW of power and 525Nm of torque. Due to the electric motor, you do feel that slight rush of power when accelerating, but it otherwise picks up speed in a linear fashion, which keeps the car comfortable. On day two, I took a trip to Sandton, then to Rosebank and came back to Springs in the evening. The drive still felt well over a million bucks but there was one slightly annoying feature. The camera facing the driver, meant to detect fatigue and when you are distracted, allowing the digital cluster to remind you to stay focused on the road, was way too sensitive. Every time I glanced at the infotainment system, whether it was to check the navigation or even just change the music, the vehicle would start freaking out like my high school teacher when I hadn't done my homework. There were even times when I had my eyes fixed on the road but it was still on my case. I guess I just look tired all the time. I had to contend with this annoying feature on every trip I took. On day three, I took a trip from Springs to Azaadville and back. By now, I had done more than 500km in the car, and while the battery sat around 30%, thanks to the help of regenerative charging, the combined fuel range was still well over 700km. On day four, I took another trip to Sandton and back in the day and then, in the evening, I took another trip to Boksburg and back. So it was yet another 200km day for me, but the vehicle was still sitting with a combined range of over 500km. The next few days of testing involved me taking the car to Boksburg and back twice, which amounts to 150km, and I drove it in and around town. No charging, no stops at the petrol station. When I returned the car, the battery was still at 30% and there was 380km of fuel, meaning that there was still about 400km of range left, combined. I could not believe it. I feel that, if you are not driving with a heavy foot, you can take this car from Johannesburg to Cape Town on a single tank and a full charge. However, it would be an anxious trip and I do not recommend taking on that challenge. But that's the beauty of a PHEV. You don't need to worry too much because, if you are running low on range, you can always fill up with fuel. Verdict I like that Jaecoo has kept the SHS in line with the other versions of the J7 and not changed too much. The rims have been altered on the outside to make it look like an electric vehicle, and there are a few other minor changes, such as replacing the buttons in some places on the inside. I maintain that this is one of the best compact SUVs in terms of comfort and drive quality. At R689 900, this PHEV is one of the most affordable in South Africa and screams value for money. It also will definitely save the buyer a lot of money on running costs.

Chery's new plug-in hybrid Tiggo 7 CSH promises over 1 200km of range

Chery South Africa recently hit the road to showcase the fuel efficiency and real-world driving range of its Tiggo 7 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) plug-in hybrid. According to The Citizen, the result was impressive: 1 290km before requiring a stop for fuel and a charge of the battery. 'These results reinforce our belief that hybrid technology can deliver more than just efficiency; it can redefine what South Africans expect from family vehicles,' said Verene Petersen, the national brand and marketing manager at Chery South Africa. 'With the new Tiggo CSH range, we're offering drivers a smart, capable, and highly adaptable solution that meets the realities of modern mobility, whether you're commuting in the city or crossing provinces.' Chery Tiggo 7 CSH packs a punch At the heart of the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH's powertrain is a highly efficient 1.5TGDI dedicated hybrid turbo petrol engine that delivers 115kW of maximum power and 220Nm of peak torque on its own. An 18.3kWh battery pack powers a dual electric motor system that adds a further 150kW and 310Nm to the equation. This mix is driven down to the front wheel through a single speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission for a combined output of up to 265kW and 530Nm of torque. This translates into strong real-world performance that you can feel when driving the medium-sized SUV, whether you are accelerating from a standstill at traffic lights or overtaking at highway speeds. The system ensures instant power on demand, always keeping you one step ahead. For urban commuting, the hybrid battery offers over 90km of pure electric range, which is sufficient for most daily driving needs. Charge in a jiffy When it's time to recharge, the DC fast-charging capability recharges the battery from 30 to 80% in around 19 minutes — about the time needed for a coffee break. Even in charge-depleting mode, fuel consumption drops to as low as 4.9L/100km, significantly reducing the overall cost of ownership for customers. The range of over 1 200km from the 60-litre fuel tank eliminates range anxiety on long-distance trips, while reducing the need for frequent refuelling – making every journey more convenient and worry-free. Catering to the growing popularity of outdoor lifestyles, the Tiggo 7 CSH boasts a 3.3kW vehicle-to-load capability. This effectively eliminates the need for additional portable power stations on a weekend away. With most household appliances operating below 2.5kW, intelligent power management keeps your devices powered on the go, letting you stay connected if that's what you want.
