Petroleum Development Levy: NHA to get Rs100bn for 3 Balochistan highway projects
According to NHA document, the authority demanded Rs 160.2 billion in Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), but gets allocation of Rs 100 billion. For dualisation of Khuzdar-Kuchlak Section (N-25) length 330.52 km, Rs 34 billion has been allocated against the demand of Rs 50.8 billion. For dualisation and rehabilitation Karachi-Quetta-Chaman Road (N-25) from Karachi-Kararo (233 km) and Wadh–Khuzdar (41 km) having total length of 273 km, Rs 33 billion has been allocated against the demand of Rs 52.5 billion. For dualisation of Kararo–Wadh Section (83 km) Kuchlak–Chaman Section (104 km) of National Highway (N-25) length 187 km, Rs 33 billion has been allocated against the demand of Rs 56.9 billion.
The NHA right now is working on Rs 2,200 billion worth of roads and highways projects. In the PSDP for FY26, the NHA requested funds for 161 schemes but the federal government approved funds of Rs 227 billion for only 105 projects. Because of shortage of funds, the NHA through toll tax and other sources earned Rs 64.8 billion in FY25 compared to Rs 32 billion in FY24.

This amount would be used for maintenance and rehabilitation of roads and highways falls in the domain of NHA.
It may be mentioned here, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in April instead of passing on the relief of reduced oil prices in international market to consumers, directed to use saved money for reconstruction of the N-25 Highway and completion of Phase-II of the Kachhi Canal project in Balochistan. Transformation of the N-25, known infamously as the 'deadly road', into a Motorway-standard highway.
The N-25, connecting Karachi to Chaman via Quetta, Kalat, and Khuzdar, has claimed more than 2,000 lives in recent years due to its poor condition and single-lane structure.
PM Shehbaz announced that the Rs 300 billion reconstruction project would now move forward under the federal government's supervision, with a third-party validation to ensure high standards of construction.
The construction of highway was first approved in the fiscal year 2022-23, but progress stalled due to funding gaps in the past.

PTI leader's bail extended by ATC
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Muhammad Ahmad Chattha till September 19 in four separate cases, including the Jinnah House attack and Shadman Police Station arson. ATC Administrative Judge Manzer Ali Gill presided over the proceedings. Chattha appeared before the court following the expiry of his earlier bail period. The judge summoned the complete case record from the prosecution and directed the defence to present arguments at the next hearing. Chattha has sought bail in several cases, including the attack on Jinnah House, arson at Shadman Police Station, and setting fire to police vehicles in Zaman Park. In a separate hearing, the ATC dismissed the post-arrest bail petition of PTI leader Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed in a case related to vandalism and provocative speeches during the May 9 protests near Sherpao Bridge. ATC Judge Arshad Javed dismissed the plea after the petitioner's counsel requested to withdraw the application. The case was registered at Sarwar Road Police Station and pertains to allegations of delivering inflammatory speeches and participating in acts of vandalism during the protests. Money laundering case The ATC confirmed the interim bail of a female bank officer, Sanam Shaukat, in a case involving money laundering, terror financing, and the opening of illegal bank accounts. Presiding over the hearing, Judge Manzer Ali Gill directed the accused to submit surety bonds worth Rs. 100,000. According to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Sanam Shaukat and several other bank officials allegedly facilitated illegal financial transactions for individuals associated with banned outfits, including those listed in the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Five years after the pandemic, is remote working still viable?
Remote working, which became a necessity during the Covid-19 pandemic, still continutes to prevail in many companies even five years later, while some have switched to a hybrid model, and others have done away with it altogether. Working - or not working - from home has become a hot topic in the corporate world. According to a report in The Economist, bosses, by and large, claim that having people in the office is a cultural boon. The spontaneity that often leads to new ideas is lost when staff work from home. Collaboration suffers, too. A study of 61,000 Microsoft employees back in 2021 found that remote working in the first half of 2020 made the tech giant more 'siloed' and less 'dynamic'. It is also harder to integrate new staff. Yet virtually all employees say they would prefer to do at least some work at home and companies need to remain flexible to these needs. Whether remote working is feasible depends on many things, such as corporate culture - which varies from country to country depending upon native laws, traditions, respect for privacy, personal accommodation, merit and above all structured promotion and award mechanism. In the case of Pakistan, many firms maintain a traditionalist approach, not allowing their employees to work from home even in their difficult times thus adding to their stress and productivity. Economic strategist and regional expert Dr Mehmoodul Hassan Khan told Business Recorder 'corporate companies need swiftness, efficiency, joint work and timely execution of a certain assignment or project because every individual and section is equally interrelated and interdependent.' Remote working only works if discipline, team-work, information sharing and the nature of work is not compromised. He also believes the Pakistani banking industry's HR policies, in particular, need a major overhaul. Industry bosses rarely allow work from home even if the need is genuine, he said. Bosses in banking and other sectors are treated as supreme leaders who have their own criteria of transfers/postings, promotion, rewards and sanctions of leaves which often leads to a downfall in productivity and morale, he added. In some cases, companies are more accomodating towards women's request to work from home, given the societal assumption that they have to juggle home life with work. But firms must judge the discipline, punctuality, productivity and participation of all employees equally. Another model is the 4-day work week. In 2022, Belgium passed a law allowing workers to compress their full work hours into four longer weekdays with full pay. Employers can still refuse but must do so in writing with justification Germany conducted a six‑month pilot in 2023–2024 involving around 41–45 companies exploring shorter weeks with full pay; with 73% saying they planned to continue the model. Many other European countries, as well as South Africa, Brazil, the UK and the US have had similar trials with positive outcomes which brings one to the conclusion that employee wellbeing should be prioritised, and productivity will follow.

PM Shehbaz emphasises comprehensive plan to make EVs accessible for all
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed to formulate a comprehensive government-level strategy to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible to the common citizen, the Prime Minister's Office said in a press release. Presiding a meeting in Islamabad regarding encouraging usage of EVs in the country, PM Shehbaz emphasised that encouraging electric vehicles in Pakistan will result in billions of dollars saved in fuel import costs, environmental protection, and the growth of local industry. He announced that the federal government, including the federal educational board and all other educational boards across the country, will provide electric bikes to top-performing students. Pakistan launches National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-30 The prime minister further stated that the government will prioritise employment generation by providing electric rickshaws and loaders vehicles to unemployed individuals. To support the local EV industry, the premier instructed the development of a complete ecosystem for the manufacturing and maintenance of EVs within Pakistan. He also called for third-party validation of the EV distribution process and government support mechanisms, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The prime minister emphasised that economically disadvantaged individuals should be given priority in accessing EVs under the government assistance scheme. He ordered the launch of a public awareness campaign about the EV subsidy scheme and ensured that the electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders distributed through the initiative meet high-quality and safety standards. A review meeting, chaired by PM Shehbaz, on promoting EVs and government support for their acquisition was participated by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to PM Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior officials. The meeting was briefed on current industrial capacity and the government's ongoing steps to ensure affordability and accessibility of EVs through low-cost loans and flexible terms. Sindh govt allocates budget for EV taxis, scooters in FY26 More than 100,000 electric bikes and over 3,000 rickshaws/loaders will be made available under easy conditions through government support. Additionally, it was shared that top-performing intermediate students across boards, including the federal board, will receive free electric bikes under the scheme. A 25% quota has been reserved for women, with remaining provincial quotas to be distributed based on population. The PM directed to increase Balochistan's quota by 10%. The scheme is expected to attract at least four new battery manufacturers, which will boost investment, employment, and business opportunities in Pakistan. The prime minister directed for the swift rollout of the scheme based on these recommendations.
