US and China trade talks to take place at the weekend
American and Chinese officials will finally hold trade talks later this week, a first attempt to limit the tariff war launched by President Trump on his 'liberation day' on April 2.
In a co-ordinated announcement, spokespeople for the two governments said Scott Bessent, the US treasury secretary, Jamieson Greer, the trade representative, and He Lifeng, the Chinese vice-premier, would arrive in Switzerland on Friday for talks on Saturday and Sunday.
'I look forward to productive talks as we work towards rebalancing the international economic system towards better serving the interests of the US,' Bessent said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

China continues push for greener packaging
With express delivery ubiquitous in China, where almost 175 billion packages were delivered last year, the public and private sectors are taking steps to address the reduction of packaging waste and forge a more sustainable way forward for the rapidly growing industry. Last year, express deliveries in China reached 174.5 billion, the most for any country in the world for the 11th straight year, and a rise of 21 per cent year-on-year. According to a report released by the State Post Bureau, in 2022 alone, approximately 9.92 billion packaging boxes and about 55.71 billion feet of tape were consumed in China's express delivery sector. This staggering volume has raised growing concerns about the environmental impact of packaging waste and excessive material consumption. The State Council requires express delivery companies to promote greener, reduced and reusable express packaging from 1 June, according to an updated regulation on the industry. The update stresses that eco-friendly, biodegradable and reusable materials are used in express delivery packaging, while avoiding excessive and wasteful packaging. In recent years, major express delivery companies in China and postal authorities have made efforts to reduce material use, recycle packaging materials and develop degradable materials, however, more action is still needed. Express delivery companies typically repackage goods using their own branded boxes, however, more recently, some shipments are being made using original boxes to save on excess packaging. Gao Jiaqi, who is in charge of JDL Express' intelligent logistics park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, said direct shipments are becoming more commonplace. 'When goods arrive at our warehouses from the manufacturers, we ship them directly to consumers without any repackaging,' Gao said. JDL is the logistics branch of the e-commerce platform JD. 'Couriers only need to put an express waybill on the original package for goods suitable for direct shipments, such as packed tissues and diapers, and small electronic devices in individual packages,' Gao said. In total, direct shipment helped JDL reduce over 1 billion repackages last year. ZTO Express, another major express delivery company in China, has been promoting the same practice. 'Currently, all warehouses prioritise shipping goods in their original packaging from merchants,' said Xu Yonggui, head of the marketing and branding department of ZTO Cloud Warehouse Supply Technology. Since 2022, nearly 300 of ZTO's warehouses nationwide have used an intelligent system to recommend the most efficient repackaging. Express delivery companies have also been exploring ways to reduce material usage in packaging. In 2023, JDL said it cut its use of cardboard boxes from between 5 to 25 per cent by changing their design. Last year, over 860 million of these upgraded boxes were used, reducing 12,164 metric tonnes of carbon emissions, the company said. Despite more efficient material use, single-use packaging still generates a significant amount of waste. To extend the life cycle of boxes, express delivery companies and postal services have introduced reusable circulation boxes designed for multiple uses. Reusable plastic boxes are circulating in logistics stations of JDL Express, SF Express and Deppon Express for inter-station transportation, saving single-use packaging. While the amended regulation puts more emphasis on the responsibility of express companies, the actions of consumers also matter for waste reduction. To tackle the express packages flooding into its campuses every day, Zhejiang University has operated a package collection program since 2016, serving around 100,000 people. 'Students open their packages and leave the cardboard boxes at the station for reuse,' said Yao Xin, chairman of the logistics group at Zhejiang University. 'In one station, over 200 packages are collected every day, which will later be provided to students for free.' Last year, over 8.2 million parcels were delivered to Zhejiang University campuses, according to Yao. A further 440,000 parcels were sent out from those campuses.

Midyear shopping festival shows robust purchasing power
Chinese consumers have exhibited robust purchasing power for home appliances and intelligent electronic products during this year's '618' shopping carnival, a weekslong sales event that culminates on 18 June, as e-commerce platforms have ramped up efforts to offer steep discounts and shopping subsidies amid the country's pro-consumption policies, such as the consumer goods trade-in programme. Experts said the midyear promotional event is expected to play a vital role in further stimulating people's purchasing appetite, expanding domestic demand and promoting the recovery of the consumer market, given that boosting consumption is a top priority for China's economic growth this year. Data from e-commerce giant JD, which initiated the '618' shopping extravaganza, showed that the turnover, order volume and number of shoppers placing orders on the platform all increased more than 200 per cent year-on-year in the first hour of the shopping gala, which officially started at 8 pm on 30 May. More than 20,000 brands saw their sales surge more than threefold year-on-year during this hour, and the turnover in the electronics categories soared over 380 per cent from a year earlier, JD said. Meanwhile, over 500 home appliance and home lifestyle brands recorded over tenfold growth in turnover compared with the previous year. The transaction volume of Apple, Xiaomi, Midea, Huawei and Haier each surpassed 100 million yuan (£10.3 million) very quickly within the first hour of the promotion, while the sales of more than 10,000 popular electronic products such as gaming laptops, high-end earphones and intelligent robots skyrocketed over tenfold year-on-year. According to Tmall, Alibaba Group's business-to-customer platform, 217 brands saw their sales exceed 100 million yuan (£10.3 million) between 8 pm on 16 May and 9 pm on 30 May. The turnover of home appliances, mobile phones and digital products participating in the country's trade-in programme increased 283 per cent compared with last year's Singles Day shopping festival, a weekslong sales event that peaks on 11 November. The overall sales of home appliances, home decorations and electronic gadgets registered double-digit growth year-on-year, Tmall said. Consumers increasingly prefer to snap up bargains via livestreaming on the e-commerce platform, with the turnover from 419 livestreaming rooms surpassing 10 million yuan (£1.03 million) as of 9 pm on 30 May. 'Consumption has become the main driving force boosting China's economic growth, and the 18 June online shopping extravaganza is pivotal in terms of unleashing consumers' purchasing potential, driving domestic demand and shoring up the economy amid external uncertainties,' said Wang Yun, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research. Stephan Patton, from the United States, who works for a multinational company in Shanghai, recently bought a new refrigerator and outdoor sports equipment on Chinese e-commerce platforms. 'I am delighted to stock up on products that I am keen to purchase without spending too much money during the shopping festival.' He said there are some pretty decent discounts if people can catch them in time, and he enjoyed a discount of about 20 per cent with shopping coupons. China's efficient delivery services have also greatly impressed him. 'Most items can be delivered to my doorstep the next day after placing an order. It is quite convenient.' The country announced a raft of measures to expand the scope of the consumer goods trade-in programme in January, increasing funding from 150 billion yuan (£15.4 billion) last year to 300 billion yuan (£30.8 billion) through ultra-long-term special treasury bonds, and offering subsidies for more home appliances and electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. 'The policy measures to encourage trade-ins of consumer goods have not only motivated consumers' enthusiasm to purchase and bolstered the sales of consumer electronic products and household appliances on online marketplaces, but also propelled the popularity of green and energy-saving commodities,' said Mo Daiqing, a senior analyst at the Internet Economy Institute, a domestic consultancy.

FIFA 'close stadium sections' after slashing ticket prices for Club World Cup - as governing body offers special deal for fans to watch Lionel Messi
FIFA have reportedly closed sections of stadiums for some Club World Cup matches due to a lack of ticket sales, after the governing body reduced prices for the competition. The revamped and expanded tournament will kick off in the United States on Sunday June 15, with Al Ahly taking on Inter Miami in the tournament's opening match. There have been concerns that the first game, which features Lionel Messi 's Inter Miami, will be met by thousands of empty seats. Thousands of tickets have been left unsold for the game, which will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium - a ground that have a capacity of 65,326. Earlier this month it was reported that sales for the match had been as low as 20,000, but FIFA denied the estimate. Tickets for the tournament have been sold under a dynamic pricing model, which sees prices determined by demand, and lowering costs indicate FIFA is struggling to sell them. The Athletic reported that the cheapest seat was priced at $349 (£257) following the draw in December, but tickets have been listed at $67 (£50) on FIFA's official ticketing partner Ticketmaster. The outlet reported that FIFA have also offered a deal to Miami Dade College in their bid to fill the stadium for the tournament's opening match. The governing body had launched a partnership with the college last year, offering the chance for students to intern at their Miami office. FIFA have now reportedly offered a promotion which will provide 'up to four complimentary tickets to the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup with the purchase of one ticket at the reduced student price of $20'. The offer effectively sees some tickets to watch Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday be priced at $4 (£2.90). The Hard Rock Stadium is set to host eight matches of the expanded competition. The Associated Press reported that the upper levels for certain matches at Seattle's Lumen Field and Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field were no longer available. Links to a smattering of resale tickets in those sections did not work. A person with knowledge of the situation said some sections of Lumen Field in Seattle had been closed, but did not offer details. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak on the record. In Philadelphia, some ticketholders received messages that said they were moved. 'As we continue preparations to deliver a world-class event, we are making a few enhancements inside the stadium to optimise operations and ensure the best possible matchday experience for fans, players and the global broadcast audience,' the message said. 'As a result of these stadium optimisations, some seats, including yours, will be relocated. We want to ensure you that your new seat will be in the same or better value zone than your original one.' Thousands of tickets are currently available for the match between Brazilian side Flamengo and Esperance de Tunis from Tunisia. Numerous tickets are available at $33 (£24) for the match on Monday. FIFA offered a general statement on ticketing for the tournament, stating that the revamped competition has 'global anticipation and reach,'. 'We anticipate great attendances and electric atmospheres at its inaugural edition, with excitement growing with every round of matches and the tournament ultimately standing as the undisputed pinnacle of club world football,' a statement read. 'The appetite speaks for itself: fans from over 130 countries have already purchased tickets. 'The top 10 markets are led by the United States, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, France, Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Portugal - a clear sign of global anticipation and reach.' Some matches at the tournament have attracted interest from fans, including newly crowned Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain's opener against Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The least expensive seats at the Rose Bowl are currently priced at $97 (£71).
