
One more death after two-week battle, toll rises to 12
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old A. Vijay, succumbed at 1:22 a.m. on Thursday (July 24, 2025) at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad, where he had been receiving treatment since July 9. He was initially admitted to Gandhi Hospital on July 8 before being referred to NIMS the following day.
According to information shared by the hospital, Vijay succumbed to sepsis and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS), a life-threatening condition in which an infection leads to systemic inflammation, eventually causing the failure of vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
'A. Vijay, admitted with history toddy consumption, was intubated on July 23, has expired today at 1:22 a.m. July 24 due to sepsis with MODS. Death summary is being written now , the local police station has been informed as it an MLC case,' a statement from the hospital read.
Meanwhile, several others are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals across the city. The victims, mostly from Kukatpally, were rushed to hospital on the night of July 8 after experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, low blood pressure, dizziness, and fatigue. Since then, hospitals have continued to receive patients reporting similar complaints.
They had allegedly consumed toddy from three toddy depots in Kukatpally, samples of which have tested positive for alprazolam. Further investigation in the case is underway by the excise officials.

475 patients screened for hepatitis at IMS-BHU
Varanasi: About 475 patients were screened for Hepatitis B and C and given medicines for viral hepatitis free of cost in the OPD of gastroenterology department, at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) BHU on Monday, marking World Hepatitis Day. On the occasion, People were made aware of the disease through banners, posters, and hoardings. The Viral Hepatitis Control Programme, operated under the department of gastroenterology, has been running since Sept 14, 2020. Under this program, free examination of the patient, viral load test, and free medicine are being distributed. So far, about 10,190 patients have been registered. The programme, run by the govt of India, aims to make India hepatitis-free by 2030. On Monday, 7 patients were found positive for hepatitis B, and 2 patients were found positive for hepatitis C . Dr Devesh Prakash Yadav, head of gastroenterology and nodal officer of the programme, said HbiG is administered to newborns of a hepatitis B positive woman, for free under this program. Prof. Shampa Anyapurva of the department of microbiology and Dr Kuhu Chatterjee, Dr. Sunit Kumar Shukla, Dr. Anurag Tiwari, Dr. Vinod Kumar, and Dr. Brijesh Pandey of the Gastroenterology Department participated in the programme.

Workshop on self-care for academic success, mental health
Varanasi: The well-being services cell of Banaras Hindu University organised a workshop on 'Self-Care for Academic Success: Strategies for Nurturing Well-being at University', on International Self-Care Day 2025. The event aimed to empower students with essential strategies for maintaining their well-being and achieving academic success. The workshop focused on key objectives, including understanding the importance of self-care in academic success, identifying personal stressors, and developing effective coping mechanisms. Prof Manushi Srivastava, from the department of community medicine, Institute of Medical Sciences, served as the resource person. She emphasised the critical link between self-care and a healthy academic life. Nityanand Tiwari, student counsellor of the well-being services cell, explained the aspects of self-care, including self-care actions and interventions. Over 150 students participated in the workshop from various faculties.
