Colombia Sees 43% Surge in Deforestation

Israa Farhan
Colombia has reported a sharp 43% rise in deforestation in 2024, reversing the downward trend recorded in previous years.
According to figures released by the Environment Ministry and IDEAM, the country lost around 113,600 hectares of forest last year, with the Amazon region suffering the most severe damage.
The data marks a significant setback after 2023 witnessed a 36% drop in forest loss, reaching the lowest rate in over two decades.
Environment Minister Lena Estrada
confirmed
that the Amazon rainforest accounted for more than 65% of total deforestation, with an estimated 75,000 hectares destroyed. She described the Amazon as a fragile area, home to vulnerable communities now facing increasing environmental pressures.
The government attributed the rise in forest destruction to a combination of illegal land grabbing for pastures, the expansion of cattle ranching, unauthorized construction, and the growth of illicit crops such as coca. Climate change also played a role, with wildfires during prolonged droughts accelerating the forest loss.
Protected national parks were not spared. Areas like Tinigua, La Macarena, and Chiribiquete, Colombia's UNESCO-listed heritage site, also experienced notable deforestation in 2024.
Despite the recent spike, officials highlighted that deforestation levels remain below those recorded in 2021.
Ghisliane Echeverry, head of IDEAM, noted that Colombia still maintains a net reduction in forest loss compared to that baseline year, continuing an overall downward trend that began in 2022.

OPEN// Egypt pressing to open crossings, provides 70% of Gaza aid despite Israeli obstacles

CAIRO, Aug 3 (MENA) - Egypt plays a vital, exceptional, and consistent role in supporting the Palestinian cause, based on its historical responsibility, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty said on Sunday. In an interview with Extra News on the sidelines of the 6th edition of the Egyptians Abroad Conference, Abdelatty described the humanitarian situation in the war-devastated Gaza Strip as 'catastrophic by all standards,' adding that the international community should be ashamed of this reality. He held the occupying power fully responsible under international law and the Geneva Conventions for the deteriorating situation, noting that while there are five crossings linking Israel to Gaza, all remain closed. Meanwhile, Egypt has kept the Rafah crossing open 24/7 from its side, although the Palestinian side of the crossing remains closed due to Israeli restrictions, and aid trucks are often targeted. The minister emphasized that Egypt is exerting maximum pressure on the Israeli side through its contacts with the United States to open the crossings and allow aid delivery. He added that Egypt is also working tirelessly to provide assistance, whether by land, with around 120 trucks delivered so far, or by participating in joint airdrops with Western countries and Jordan. The top diplomat stressed, however, that airdrops cannot substitute for access through land crossings, which remain closed by Israeli authorities. Abdelatty said that 70% of the humanitarian aid delivered to Gaza since October 7, 2023, has been provided by Egypt. He criticized misleading campaigns that downplay Egypt's efforts, saying such narratives only serve Israel's objective of easing international pressure. On ceasefire negotiations, the minister confirmed that talks are ongoing, and Egypt is intensifying its efforts to reach a deal. However, the main obstacle remains the absence of genuine political will from the Israeli side to agree on a comprehensive deal that would include the release of hostages and Palestinian detainees, along with the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid. He expressed hope that these efforts would soon bear fruit, allowing for the announcement of a date for the international Gaza reconstruction and early recovery conference. Abdelatty noted that many countries and international organizations have expressed their desire for Egypt to co-sponsor the conference. (MENA) M S H/R E E

OPEN// FM: Anyone claiming Egypt's regional role marginalized is delusional

CAIRO, Aug 3 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty firmly asserted that any claims suggesting Egypt's regional role is being marginalized are entirely misguided and demonstrate a lack of understanding of the geo-strategic realities of the region. In statements to MENA, Abdelatty responded to ongoing attempts by some foreign actors to sideline and undermine Egypt's influence in regional and international affairs, especially in relation to the Palestinian cause. He pointed to key factors underpinning Egypt's position, including its history, geography, demographics and above all, the wise and capable leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, who steers the country's foreign policy with strategic clarity and foresight. Abdelatty reaffirmed that Egypt will never hesitate to carry out its responsibilities, stating that Egypt's actions speak louder than words. He stressed that, without regional stability, Egypt cannot achieve the development it aspires to. "Moreover, Egypt has a moral and historical responsibility toward its brothers and sisters in Palestine, Sudan, Libya, Syria, Yemen and across the African continent." He clarified that while Egypt's Rafah border crossing operates continuously, the Palestinian side of the crossing is under occupation and has been destroyed by Israeli forces. Abdelatty warned that both categories of critics, whether misguided or intentionally deceitful, ultimately serve Israel's interests by deflecting blame from the occupying power, which bears full responsibility for the catastrophic humanitarian and medical situation in Gaza. Egyptian & Turkish FMs Discuss Gaza and Regional Developments

H-Tayea Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatti received a phone call from Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday, as part of ongoing diplomatic coordination and consultations on regional developments. Both ministers praised the remarkable progress in Egyptian-Turkish relations, noting the recent surge in high-level visits and cooperation across multiple sectors. They emphasized the importance of building on this momentum, particularly as the two nations celebrate the centennial of diplomatic relations in 2025. During the call, the ministers reiterated their shared commitment to boosting economic and trade relations, aiming to raise bilateral trade to 15 billion USD. They also welcomed increasing Turkish investments in Egypt, acknowledging the recent reforms Egypt has undertaken to improve the investment climate. The discussion highlighted the outcomes of the first High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council held in September 2024, co-chaired by the Egyptian and Turkish presidents. Regionally, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza took center stage. Minister Abdelatti briefed his Turkish counterpart on Egypt's coordination with Qatar and the United States to resume a ceasefire and facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian, medical, and shelter aid to the besieged population. He emphasized the need to increase the number of aid trucks, while both ministers condemned the deliberate starvation policy currently affecting Gaza. The two sides agreed on the urgent need for joint action with international stakeholders to end the ongoing Israeli aggression, achieve a deal for the release of hostages, and push back against violations of international law and humanitarian norms. They underscored the importance of applying pressure on both parties involved in the conflict to reach an immediate ceasefire. The call also addressed wider regional developments, including the latest situations in Syria and Libya, where both Egypt and Turkey remain actively engaged. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
