Huge volcano eruption caught on camera as ash rains down on villages
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a moderately explosive eruption occurred at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano before dawn, lasting five minutes based on seismic and infrasound data.
Ash fell in at least nine villages to the south west of the volcano on Negros island, but no injuries or damage was reported.
A level three alert - on a scale of five - that was put in place during Kanlaon's eruption in December remained unchanged. The alert means the volcano is in a state of magmatic unrest.

Typhoon Podul slams into southern Taiwan, hundreds of flights cancelled
TAIPEI, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Typhoon Podul hit Taiwan's sparsely populated southeast coast on Wednesday packing winds of up to 191 kph (118 mph), as a large swathe of southern and eastern parts of the island shut down and hundreds of flights were cancelled. Taiwan is regularly hit by typhoons, generally along its mountainous east coast facing the Pacific. Podul slammed into the southeastern city of Taitung around 1 p.m. (0500GMT), Taiwan's Central Weather Administration said. "Destructive winds from typhoon expected. Take shelter ASAP," read a text message alert issued to cellphone users in parts of Taitung early on Wednesday. The alert warned people of gusts above 150 kph (93 mph) in the coming hours. Nine cities and counties announced the suspension of work and school for Wednesday, including the southern metropolises of Kaohsiung and Tainan. In the capital Taipei, home to Taiwan's financial markets, there were blustery winds but no impact. Authorities are also working to evacuate those whose homes were damaged by a July typhoon that brought record winds and damaged the electricity grid in a rare direct hit to Taiwan's west coast. The government said more than 5,500 people had been evacuated ahead of the typhoon's arrival. All domestic flights were cancelled on Wednesday - 252 in total - while 129 international ones were axed too, the transport ministry said. Taiwan's two main international carriers China Airlines ( opens new tab and EVA Air ( opens new tab said their cancellations were focused on routes out of Kaohsiung, with some flights from the island's main international airport at Taoyuan stopped as well. After making landfall, the storm is expected to hit Taiwan's much more densely populated western coast before heading for China's southern province of Fujian later this week. As much as 600 mm (24 inches) of rain was forecast in southern mountainous areas over the next few days, the Central Weather Administration said. More than a year's rainfall fell in a single week this month in some southern areas, unleashing widespread landslides and flooding, with four deaths.

Earthquake strikes just miles from US volcano that's set to erupt
An earthquake was detected just miles north of an Alaskan volcano that is set to erupt. The US Geological Survey detected a 4.6 magnitude quake in Petersville, about 48 miles from Mount Spurr. The Alaska Earthquake Center said: 'We have reviewed a M4.6 earthquake that occurred at 10:38 am local time, 52.4 miles deep and 34 miles N of Skwentna. 'This event was reported as felt throughout Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna region.' The USGS has received nearly 200 reports of shaking in the sparsely populated region. Flash floods swallow Indian village, at least four dead, over 50 missing
Aug 5 (Reuters) - Surging flood waters swept through a village in the northern Indian Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, killing at least four people and more than 50 others were missing, India Today TV channel reported on Tuesday. Teams from army and disaster response forces had reached the area, local authorities said, with workers trying to rescue people trapped under debris and sludge, authorities added. TV news channels showed water, mud and debris surging down a mountain, sweeping away homes and a road. The mudslide cleaved through Dharali village, burying some houses, according to a video update shared by the state chief minister's office. "A massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the KheerGad area near Harsil, triggering a sudden flow of debris and water through the settlement," the Central Command of the Indian Army said in a post on X. Uttarakhand is prone to floods and landslides, which some experts blame on climate change. At least 200 people died in 2021 when flash floods swept away two hydroelectric projects in the state. There are about 10,000 glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, and many are receding due to the warming climate.
