US FCC approves $8.4 billion Paramount-Skydance merger, ending months of turmoil

India Today4 days ago
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially approved the $8.4 billion merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media. This deal will join well-known names like CBS, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon under new ownership. The decision, finalised with the FCC's grant of various licence transfer applications, marks a turning point for one of the oldest broadcast networks in the country, now set to undergo sweeping changes under new ownership.advertisementThe FCC agreed to transfer broadcast licences for 28 owned-and-operated CBS television stations to the new owners after Paramount paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump over a "60 Minutes" interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that aired in October.FCC GIVES GO-AHEAD AFTER PROMISES OF FAIRNESS
The FCC's approval came after Skydance and RedBird made promises to maintain journalistic integrity and fairness. The companies said they are committed to showing a wide range of views in their media coverage. In support of that, Skydance will designate an impartial individual to investigate complaints of editorial bias, known as an ombudsman. The purpose of this action is to guarantee openness and foster viewer trust.FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said, "Skydance's commitment to make significant changes at the once-storied CBS broadcast network is welcomed. The new company has made written commitments to ensure its programming includes viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum."CHANGES IN PARAMOUNT'S POLICIESParamount terminated its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives as part of the agreement. This modification supports the Trump administration's stance that these kinds of policies are unjust. This action, according to Carr, is a step in the right direction towards ending "invidious forms of DEI discrimination."The decision to approve the merger was made in a 2-1 vote. Democratic Commissioner Anna Gomez was the only one to oppose it. She strongly criticized the deal, calling it harmful to press freedom and public interest."After months of cowardly capitulation to this Administration, Paramount finally got what it wanted," Gomez said. "Unfortunately, it is the American public who will ultimately pay the price for its actions."She added, "Even more alarming, it is now imposing never-before-seen controls over newsroom decisions and editorial judgment, in direct violation of the First Amendment and the law."David Ellison, CEO of Skydance and son of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, is expected to become the chairman and CEO of the new Paramount. Jeff Shell, who used to lead NBCUniversal, will serve as the new president. This deal also signals the end of the Redstone family's long involvement with Paramount. Sumner Redstone had turned a chain of drive-in theaters into a powerful media company that once included TV, film, radio, and publishing.advertisementHis daughter, Shari Redstone, became Paramount's chair in 2019 after reuniting CBS and Viacom, hoping to make the company stronger against rising competition from global entertainment giants. In recent years, Paramount has lost billions in market value as it struggled to keep up with the fast-changing world of streaming.- EndsWith inputs from Agencies Must Watch

Republican Nancy Mace says she enjoys watching ICE deportation videos, sparks outrage

Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace has openly said she enjoys watching online videos of undocumented immigrants being arrested in court by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. 'I have to tell you, one of my favourite things to watch on YouTube these days are the court hearings where illegals are in court and ICE shows up to drag them out of court and deport them,' Mace told host Jon Scott on Fox Report Weekend. She added, 'I can think of nothing more American today than keeping our streets safer by getting those violent criminals out of the United States of America, and we all have Donald J. Trump to thank for it.' According to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, as of 13 July, over 56,000 people were in ICE detention. More than 70 percent of them had no criminal convictions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Outrage across party lines Mace's comments drew immediate criticism. Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh posted on X, 'Getting off on watching YouTube clips of immigrants at their court hearings grabbed by ICE is twisted & cruel.' He added, 'The cruelty is the point. The … Republican party base gets off on this cruelty. She knows who she's talking to.' Progressive X user Richard Angwin, who has more than 200,000 followers, wrote, 'Nancy Mace's gleeful endorsement of ICE's courthouse ambushes on undocumented immigrants exposes her as a hypocritical opportunist who prioritises performative cruelty over constitutional due process and American values of fairness.' Live Events Her interview followed a Guardian report on a separate incident in Florida, where ICE officers were filmed telling a teenage US citizen, 'You've got no rights,' after pulling him over while he was on his way to work with two undocumented men. That video has reignited concerns about the tactics ICE agents use during routine stops. New push to defund sanctuary cities During the same Fox News segment, Mace confirmed she is backing legislation aimed at punishing sanctuary cities . These are jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. 'I have a bill that would defund and take tax breaks away from sanctuary cities all across the country,' Mace said. Fox News also displayed ICE data during her appearance. It showed that New York City saw fewer than 9,500 detainer requests during Joe Biden's presidency. In contrast, within the first seven months of Trump's return to office, more than 6,000 detainers were issued in the same city. 'Even in South Carolina , Democrats and Republicans alike, they don't want the sanctuary policies,' she claimed. 'And that's why Democrats are going to continue to fail at the ballot box because they're putting illegals over real, true American citizens.' Gubernatorial run likely Mace, currently in her second term representing South Carolina in Congress, is now seriously considering a 2026 bid for governor. Asked about the rumours, she said, 'I'll be making a decision over the next couple of days about my future.' She continued, 'I believe I may be forced to run for governor because I can't watch my beautiful red state of South Carolina go woke.' If she runs, she'll enter a crowded Republican field. Representative Ralph Norman, Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, and Attorney General Alan Wilson are all expected contenders. A recent report by the New Hampshire Union Leader suggested Mace had 'all but confirmed' her candidacy during a visit to the early primary state. A pattern of provocation This isn't Mace's first brush with controversy. Since arriving in Washington in 2021, she has built a public image around divisive cultural issues. She has repeatedly attacked Delaware's Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, and opposes laws allowing transgender women to use women's restrooms. She has even posed for photos outside public toilets in protest. In February, Mace gave a 50-minute speech in the House accusing four men, including her former fiancé, of rape and abuse. During the televised address, she said to them, 'You've booked yourself a one-way ticket to hell. It is nonstop. There are no connections.' Mace's praise for Trump marks a shift in tone. After the Capitol riots in January 2021, she criticised the former president, saying his 'entire legacy was wiped out.' She now calls him 'the best president of our lifetime,' according to a recent post on X. The congresswoman's alignment with Trump's immigration agenda and her sharp rhetoric appear to be positioning her firmly in line with the Republican Party's hard-right base, especially as she eyes higher office.

Strategic Misstep: 20 national security experts write letter to Donald Trump administration, want America to STOP sale of these Nvidia chips to China

Certain section of security experts seem quite upset with the Donald Trump administration's decision to allow sale of Nvidia H20 advanced AI chips to China again. A group of 20 national security experts and former government officials have written a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urging the Trump administration to revert its decision to allow Nvidia to resume sale of Nvidia H20 AI chips in China . As reported by Tech Crunch, the letter calls the decision a 'Strategic Misstep'. It claims that the decision will have detrimental effects on the US' AI 'edge' for both military and civilian use cases. The letter further claims that selling Nvidia H20 chips in China will worsen the existing AI chip bottleneck in the US and that these chips could be used to support China's military. This letter comes weeks after the DOC gave Nvidia the green light to start selling its AI chips in China as the trade talks between the two countries started. At the time, Lutnick called Nvidia's H20 as the company's 'fourth best' AI chip. The H20 chip reportedly sits at the center of a broader US-China trade talk standoff. Nvidia is also introducing a new 'RTX Pro' chip designed specifically for the Chinese market, calling it 'fully compliant' with regulations and ideal for digital manufacturing applications like smart factories and logistics. Designed specifically to work around export control thresholds, the H20 is optimized for inference, the process responsible for the dramatic capabilities gains made by the latest generation of frontier AI reasoning models. For inference tasks, the H20 outperforms even the H100, an AI chip this administration has restricted access to due to its advanced capabilities." "Both U.S. and Chinese AI labs are betting that further investment in inference compute will be critical to the next leap in frontier AI capabilities. On the heels of DeepSeek's breakthrough model release earlier this year, Chinese AI labs began bulk-ordering H20 chips to develop even more advanced AI models. If the U.S. backs off of export controls to China, we believe that China's next generation of frontier AI will be built on the backs of the H20," the letter added. "While the biggest buyers of Nvidia's H20 chip are nominally civilian companies in China, we fully expect the H20 and the AI models it supports to be deployed by China's People's Liberation Army." "The decision to ban H20 exports earlier this year was the right one. We ask you to stand by that principle and continue blocking the sale of advanced AI chips to China as America works to maintain its technological edge. This is not a question of trade. It is a question of national security," concludes the letter. Letter's signatories The letter's signatories include Matt Pottinger, the former deputy national security adviser during Trump's first term; Stewart Baker, the former assistant secretary of Homeland Security under George W Bush; and David Feith, a former member of the National Security Council, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Lloyd Thrall, among others. China says AI risks becoming "exclusive game" as Beijing proposes global body

FILE - A Chinese flag flies from a ship at the Port of Oakland on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in Oakland, Calif. (AP Photo/Noah Berger,File) Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for the establishment of a global artificial intelligence cooperation organization on Saturday, positioning Beijing as an alternative to Washington's AI dominance just days after President Trump unveiled his low-regulation AI strategy. Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Li warned that AI risks becoming "an exclusive game for a few countries and companies." The premier emphasized China's commitment to open-source AI development and promised to share technological advances with developing nations, particularly in the Global South. Li's proposal comes as the world's two largest economies engage in escalating technological competition, with AI emerging as a critical battleground. Beijing challenges US tech restrictions Without explicitly naming the United States, Li criticized what he described as technological monopolies and restrictions on AI development. His remarks directly counter the Trump administration's AI Action Plan released Wednesday, which aims to maintain American supremacy in artificial intelligence while limiting access to advanced technologies, according to Reuters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Washington has imposed strict export controls on high-end AI chips from companies like Nvidia and advanced chipmaking equipment, citing national security concerns about China's military capabilities. Despite these restrictions, Chinese companies including Huawei continue developing AI systems to compensate for limited access to American technology. Global framework needed for AI governance, says Chinese Premier Li stressed the urgent need for international coordination on AI governance, describing current global efforts as "fragmented" with significant differences in regulatory approaches between countries. The three-day Shanghai conference brings together industry leaders and policymakers from over 30 nations, including Russia, South Africa, Qatar, South Korea, and Germany. China's Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu revealed plans to potentially headquarter the proposed organization in Shanghai while promoting pragmatic AI cooperation. The initiative includes establishing cross-border open-source communities and facilitating international technology exchanges, positioning China as a leader in global AI governance amid growing concerns about the technology's ethical implications and security risks.
