British mother found stabbed to death outside home in rural France
Karen Carter, 65, was discovered 'collapsed and unconscious' near her car in Trémolat, east of Bordeaux, on Tuesday evening.
A murder investigation has been opened into the mother of four's death.
Sylvie Martins-Guedes, the Bergerac prosecutor, disclosed that Mrs Carter had sustained multiple stab wounds to her chest, groin, arm and leg.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ms Martins-Guedes said that the victim was found by a friend with whom she had been in a relationship for several weeks.
'They had spent the evening together in Trémolat with friends and then returned to the victim's home, whom he said had arrived only about 10 minutes before her.
'He discovered her collapsed and unconscious near her vehicle with bleeding wounds, and he immediately called emergency services, administering first aid himself.'
Investigators said that the savagery of the attack testified to 'particular violence' and demonstrated 'a desire to kill'.
The friend was questioned by police but later released without charge, French media reported.
Police have launched a manhunt to find her killer. A murder weapon has not yet been retrieved.
Prosecutors have not ruled out the theory of a robbery gone wrong and said that 'no hypothesis is being favoured'.
Mrs Carter is understood to have lived in the Dordogne for the past 10 years and ran two upmarket guest houses.
She was also a midfielder for the over-50s Queens of Football (Reines du Foot) team that had competed in the Grannies International Football Tournament in South Africa last month.
'Everyone is in shock, it's horrible, Karen was super helpful, she was kindness personified,' her teammates told local media.
In a tribute on Facebook, a spokesman for the club wrote: 'We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Karen, our friend and Queen of Football, who leaves a great void in our hearts.
'All our thoughts go out to her loved ones.'
Anne Calvert, who runs the Dordogne Chippy, a mobile food van in Trémolat, told the Telegraph that Mrs Carter was a 'lovely person'.
She added: 'She was a regular customer here, we are really sad that this has happened.'
Another resident described her as 'a delightful, energetic person who got on with everybody'.
They added: 'Nobody can understand how this could have happened in a peaceful place like this. We are all keeping our doors locked. It is deeply worrying.'
An online CV for Mrs Carter states that she previously ran a guest house in the city of East London in South Africa before moving to Nouvelle-Aquitaine in January 2015.
'She used to travel back and forth to South Africa but has been more present here since the beginning of the year,' one neighbour told Sud Ouest, a French newspaper.

An actor whose mother was victim of a murder-suicide has urged her friends not to attend the suspected killer's funeral. Dawn Kerr was found dead alongside her husband Andrew Searle's body in the Aveyron region of France on February 6. The prosecutor in charge of the case previously described the case as a murder-suicide, in which Searle is alleged to have killed his wife before taking his own life. There was no evidence that anyone else was involved in the deaths. More than six months later Searle's body has been released by the French authorities and his funeral has been planned. But Dawn's two children, Hollyoaks actor Callum Kerr along with his sister Amanda, have issued a statement asking friends of their mum not to attend his funeral. They said that while the investigation into the deaths was ongoing, they 'cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand'. In the statement shared on social media, the siblings said: 'In the absence of any evidence suggesting third-party involvement in the tragic death of our mother, Dawn Kerr, the prevailing hypothesis remains that of a murder-suicide. 'Our mother was killed by multiple blows to the head, and Andrew was found deceased by hanging. 'His injuries are consistent with self-hanging, and no defensive wounds were found on his body. 'While the official investigation is ongoing, we cannot ignore the circumstances as they stand. 'For this reason, we must respectfully but firmly request that our mother not be included in any way in the funeral arrangements being made for Andrew. 'Please do not share photographs of them together. Please do not attend Andrew's service if you were a friend of our mother. 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death. 'We ask for understanding, privacy and respect as we continue to grieve and seek justice for our mum.' More Trending Dawn's body was found in the garden of the couple's home in Les Pesquiès, about an hour north of Toulouse, with severe wounds to her head. Searle's body was found inside the house. Police were called after a neighbour went to check on the couple when they didn't turn up to a planned dog walk. The couple, who were both aged in their 60s, previously lived in Musselburgh, near Edinburgh, and married in France in 2023 with son Callum walking Dawn down the aisle. They had lived in the Aveyron region for five years. Callum played PC George Kiss in Hollyoaks, and has also appeared in Netflix's Virgin River. Stirling union members to honour sole Scots woman who died at Auschwitz with visit
The study tour will be an opportunity for members to learn about the atrocities of the Holocaust and to pay tribute to the only Scottish woman known to have died there. Trade union campaigners from Stirling are set to embark on an educational journey to the Auschwitz concentration camp next week to highlight the horrors of the Holocaust and pay tribute to the sole Scottish woman known to have perished at the site. UNISON's Stirling branch members will depart on Wednesday, August 27, where they will honour Jane Haining – a Scottish missionary working for the Church of Scotland who tragically lost her life at Auschwitz. She was detained there after putting her own safety at risk to assist Jewish schoolgirls, but was eventually captured by the Gestapo. She faced accusations of having "worked among the Jews"; had shed tears whilst placing yellow stars on the pupils clothing; had let go of her housekeeper, who was an Aryan; had tuned into BBC news broadcasts; had entertained numerous British guests; was involved in political activities; she made visits to British prisoners of war; and she posted packages to them. The Stirling branch representatives will unite with fellow UNISON members from throughout the country in undertaking the visit and showing their respect, which they claim will "educate members, activists and the wider community to ensure these events are never forgotten". The Stirling branch will be dispatching delegates Stuart Thomson and Aaron Higgins on the trip. Upon their return they will relay their experiences to their branch colleagues and the broader community. Stuart Thomson, Stirling Council trades steward at Allan Water House, said: "I'm incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to represent UNISON on this study tour to Auschwitz. Streamer found dead in bed after '10 days of torture and sleep deprivation'
A streamer known for taking part in extreme online challenges has been found dead. Raphael Graven, also known as Jean Pormanove or JP, died following a live broadcast at his home in Contes, a village north of Nice, on Monday. The 46-year-old reportedly endured '10 days and nights of torture' including 'extreme' physical violence and sleep deprivation beforehand. People watching his final stream are said to have raised the alarm after seeing him lying motionless on a mattress and not responding to any of their messages. French newspaper Le Monde reported that Graven was known known for taking part in videos depicting violence and humiliation. While he lay on the mattress, a man could be seen throwing a bottle of water at him. Government minister Clara Chappaz described the violence Graven suffered before his death as an 'absolute horror' and said he had been 'humiliated' for months as she announced a judicial investigation is now under way. Sarah El Haïry, the country's high commissioner for children, similarly said the streamer's death is 'horrifying' in a post on X. She wrote: 'Platforms have an immense responsibility in regulating online content so that our children are not exposed to violent content. I call on parents to exercise the utmost vigilance.' Graven's cause of death has yet to be determined, and an autopsy will take place later. He had more than a million social media followers and was particularly popular on Kick, which is seen as having less stringent user terms than those of its rival, the better-known Twitch streaming service.
