Husband's shock over affair claims linked to British wife murdered in France

The husband of a British woman stabbed to death in a French village has described his shock after police said an affair with a local man could have been a motive. Alan Carter, 65, said the police investigation into the death of his wife of 30 years, Karen Carter, alleged a 'relationship I did not want to believe'. Ms Carter was found dying in her driveway with stab wounds on 29 April after she had been at a wine-tasting event in Trémolat, the Dordogne, earlier that evening. A statement by French investigators said: 'The investigation is focusing on the people who were likely after the victim or the couple she formed with her friend, both of whom were very active in the local social and community fabric.' Mr Carter, who lives in South Africa and spent some of his time in France, told The Times that the police statement had compounded his grief and that of their children. 'I could not have imagined that Karen got caught up in what is being talked about as some sort of love triangle that resulted in her being murdered in France,' he said. Ms Carter reportedly ran a cafe in the village with Jean-François Guerrier, a 74-year-old retired businessman, who worked as a volunteer. She lived in France and managed two holiday homes since visiting the country in 2009. At one stage, she ran a lifestyle blog for women over 50 called La Vie est Belle (Life is Beautiful). She was also a leading player in the Queens of Football (Reines du Foot) team, which in early April completed a tour of South Africa. Last week, a Trémolat resident said: 'Everyone is in total shock. Ms Carter was a delightful, energetic person who got on with everybody. 'We saw emergency vehicles in the village, and then lots of police cars, and then the area around her house was cordoned off,' said the resident, who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons. 'Nobody can understand how this could have happened in a peaceful place like this. We are all keeping our doors locked. It is deeply worrying.' The Dordogne is an area of France hugely popular with British tourists, second home owners and expat pensioners. In February, British couple Andrew and Dawn Searle, who previously lived in East Lothian in Scotland, were found dead at their home in the southwest village of Les Peques, north of Toulouse.

Wife's affair a ‘complete betrayal', says husband of British woman murdered in France

The husband of a British woman stabbed to death in a French village has described a feeling of 'complete betrayal' after police said an affair with a local man could have been a motive. Alan Carter, 65, said the police investigation into the death of his wife of 30 years Karen Carter, confirmed a 'relationship I did not want to believe'. Mrs Carter was found dying in her driveway with stab wounds on 29 April by François Guerrier, a 74-year-old retired businessman, after they had been at a wine-tasting event in Trémolat earlier that evening. French investigators said the probe into her death was focused 'on people likely to have had something against the victim, or against the couple that she had formed,' according to The Times. Mr Carter, who lives in South Africa and spent some of his time in the France, said: 'It was obvious Jean-François had an affection for Karen, and I feel he took advantage of the time we spent apart.' 'I could not have imagined that Karen got caught up in what is being talked about as some sort of love triangle that resulted in her being murdered in France,' he added. Mrs Carter reportedly ran a cafe in the village with Mr Guerrier as a volunteer. She lived in France and managed two holiday homes. Guerrier was president of the community association that ran the village bar where they both worked. Mum-of-four Karen was stabbed to death on Tuesday night. A 69-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with her murder. Prosecutors previously said they arrested the man who found her body. Tragedy in Trémolat: The Shocking Death of Karen Carter The woman's husband, Alan, 65, who is still in South Africa, said: "What I understand is that Karen went to a wine-tasting event on Tuesday night. He explained that his wife "was supposed to phone him [her friend] to let him know that she had got back safely". He said: "It was a ten-minute drive. Her husband also fears that she was killed by someone holding a grudge. 10 10 10 10 He added: "I don't know the details but I understand the attack was vicious and deliberate and not like it was by an interrupted intruder. "It is likely to have been someone Karen knew and had an issue with her. "But she was a kind and friendly person and got on with people. "I am just speculating but the person who did it could have been someone she knew and perhaps I knew too." It comes after a manhunt was launched for the tragic Brit's killer. An autopsy revealed Karen was killed "as she tried to defend herself from a frenzied attack". Carter "collapsed and died of her injuries" next to to her car in Trémolat, in the Dordogne region, on Tuesday evening. The Queens of Football (Reines du Foot) side - nicknamed the "Football Grannies" - will observe a minute's silence before the game. Players will also wear black armbands, local media reported. British mother found stabbed to death outside home in rural France

A British woman has been found stabbed to death outside her guest house in a mediaeval French village. Karen Carter, 65, was discovered 'collapsed and unconscious' near her car in Trémolat, east of Bordeaux, on Tuesday evening. A murder investigation has been opened into the mother of four's death. Sylvie Martins-Guedes, the Bergerac prosecutor, disclosed that Mrs Carter had sustained multiple stab wounds to her chest, groin, arm and leg. In a statement released on Thursday, Ms Martins-Guedes said that the victim was found by a friend with whom she had been in a relationship for several weeks. 'They had spent the evening together in Trémolat with friends and then returned to the victim's home, whom he said had arrived only about 10 minutes before her. 'He discovered her collapsed and unconscious near her vehicle with bleeding wounds, and he immediately called emergency services, administering first aid himself.' Investigators said that the savagery of the attack testified to 'particular violence' and demonstrated 'a desire to kill'. The friend was questioned by police but later released without charge, French media reported. Police have launched a manhunt to find her killer. A murder weapon has not yet been retrieved. Prosecutors have not ruled out the theory of a robbery gone wrong and said that 'no hypothesis is being favoured'. Mrs Carter is understood to have lived in the Dordogne for the past 10 years and ran two upmarket guest houses. She was also a midfielder for the over-50s Queens of Football (Reines du Foot) team that had competed in the Grannies International Football Tournament in South Africa last month. 'Everyone is in shock, it's horrible, Karen was super helpful, she was kindness personified,' her teammates told local media. In a tribute on Facebook, a spokesman for the club wrote: 'We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Karen, our friend and Queen of Football, who leaves a great void in our hearts. 'All our thoughts go out to her loved ones.' Anne Calvert, who runs the Dordogne Chippy, a mobile food van in Trémolat, told the Telegraph that Mrs Carter was a 'lovely person'. She added: 'She was a regular customer here, we are really sad that this has happened.' Another resident described her as 'a delightful, energetic person who got on with everybody'. They added: 'Nobody can understand how this could have happened in a peaceful place like this. We are all keeping our doors locked. It is deeply worrying.' An online CV for Mrs Carter states that she previously ran a guest house in the city of East London in South Africa before moving to Nouvelle-Aquitaine in January 2015. 'She used to travel back and forth to South Africa but has been more present here since the beginning of the year,' one neighbour told Sud Ouest, a French newspaper.

British woman, 65, dies in French village stabbing

A 65-year-old British woman has died after being stabbed in a frenzied attack outside a property she owned in a village east of Bordeaux. Members of the Tremolat community are in shock after Karen Carter, who ran guest houses in the Dordogne region, was found on Tuesday with several stab wounds after a night out with a male friend, who then called the police. 'He discovered her collapsed and unconscious near her vehicle with bleeding wounds, and he immediately called emergency services, administering first aid himself,' Bergerac prosecutor Sylvie Martins-Guedes said. 'The injuries were particularly violent, and their location demonstrated an intent to kill.' An investigating source described Ms Carter as the victim of a 'frenzied attack'. She said a manhunt was now underway to identify and arrest the attacker. 'At this stage, no hypothesis is being favoured,' she said. Local media described Ms Carter as an active participant in the Tremolat community. She was the owner and manager of two guest houses in Tremolat, and both were frequently used by guests from the UK. Ms Carter at one stage ran a lifestyle blog for women over 50 called La Vie est Belle (Life is Beautiful). She was also a leading player in the Queens of Football (Reines du Foot) team, which in early April completed a tour of South Africa. A team member said everyone was in shock over her death. 'Karen was super helpful, she was kindness personified,' the teammate said. Ms Carter was also involved in the running of the community cafe in Tremolat. It cancelled a party scheduled for Wednesday, April 30th, following Ms Carter's death. A Tremolat resident said: 'Everyone is in total shock. It is deeply worrying.' The Dordogne is an area of France that is hugely popular with British tourists, second home owners and expat pensioners. In February, British couple Andrew and Dawn Searle, who previously lived in East Lothian in Scotland, were found dead at their home in the south west village of Les Peques, north of Toulouse. The prosecutor in charge of the case has since said there was no evidence that another person was involved in their deaths, and that murder-suicide was the likely cause.
