Reforms make Egypt ‘land of opportunity,' business leader tells Serbia
The head of the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce has urged Serbian businesses to use Egypt as a joint manufacturing and logistics centre for exporting to Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, citing recent economic reforms and extensive free trade agreements.
Speaking at the Egyptian-Serbian Business Forum on Tuesday, Ahmed El-Wakil said that recent reforms, coordinated in 'a successful partnership between the government and the private sector,' have transformed Egypt. 'Thanks to these reforms, Egypt has once again become a land of promising opportunities,' he said.
El-Wakil called on Serbian companies to leverage Egypt's domestic market of over 100 million consumers, which he said expands to more than 3 billion through tariff-free trade agreements with the Arab world, Africa, the European Union, EFTA, Mercosur, Turkey, and the United States.
'We must use Egypt as a centre for joint manufacturing and a logistics centre in order to export to all these markets, without customs and with low shipping costs,' he said.
He identified several key sectors for cooperation where Serbia has advanced technology, including phosphate purification, the manufacturing of phosphoric acid and fertilisers, and the metal industries, particularly iron and steel. He added that negotiations on some of these areas began during a previous presidential visit to Serbia.
Other potential areas for partnership include component manufacturing for the automotive and home appliance sectors, software development and localisation, river transport linked to multimodal logistics, and tourism.
To facilitate this, El-Wakil announced that the Egyptian and Serbian chambers of commerce would appoint contact points to develop bilateral trade and investment and connect their members.
The business leader also addressed Serbia's hosting of the Belgrade Expo in 2027. 'We have supported Egypt in various Expo exhibitions, from Milan to Dubai, and we affirm that we will spare no effort in ensuring full support for the Belgrade Expo in 2027,' he said, highlighting the experience of Egyptian construction and infrastructure firms that have executed major projects globally.
'The time for talk is over, and the time has come to move forward with concrete measures,' El-Wakil concluded.
The forum was held in Egypt's New Administrative Capital and was chaired by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Serbian Prime Minister Guro Macut. In his opening remarks, El-Wakil noted that it was the third such high-level business meeting in two years, extending greetings on behalf of the Federation's more than 6 million members.

Salt Burger Is Now Open On Egypt's North Coast
Known for drawing late-night burger crowds in the Gulf, Salt is testing Egyptian waters with a Sahel pop-up that's already attracting beachgoers and fries fiends alike. Jun 18, 2025 Salt has made its way to Egypt's North Coast with a seasonal location bringing its signature sliders and milkshakes to Sahel. Located on Marassi Marina's busy dining strip, the burger brand opened to long lines earlier this month. Salt first launched from a food truck in 2014 and quickly gained a loyal following across the Gulf, particularly in Dubai and Riyadh, with its clean branding and limited but viral menu. In the past few years, it's also become a hotspot for sneaker drops, music nights, and capsule collections, positioning itself more like a lifestyle hub than a quick-stop, fast food stop. Brief pop-ups have appeared in Cairo before, but this is the first time the brand has taken over a coastal location at peak season.

Swypex Launches Egypt's First Approval-Based Card, Redefining How Businesses Control Spend
Yara Sameh Swypex, Egypt's all-in-one financial management platform, has unveiled the country's first Approval-Based Limits Card, an innovative product designed to modernize how companies manage spending. Available exclusively through the new Swypex Premium subscription, the card introduces dynamic spend limits that unlock only after transactions are reviewed and approved, which gives finance teams real-time visibility and precise control. Mimicking the operational dynamics of petty cash management, the Approval-Based Limits Card acts like a rotating balance, ensuring that no employee's spending exceeds what's been approved. This approach replaces fragmented, manual processes with an automated, policy-enforced financial governance system that drives operational efficiency. 'Egyptian businesses want control without friction, and this card gives them exactly that,' said Ahmad Mokhtar, Co-Founder and CEO of Swypex. 'Approval-Based Limit Cards bring a new standard of precision and agility to business finance. It's the bridge between old-world cash management and seamless, secure corporate spending. This card empowers companies to shift from chasing expenses to controlling them with clarity, speed, and confidence,' he added. Swypex's launch comes as Egypt undergoes a rapid transformation in its financial infrastructure. While more than 74% of adults are now financially included and mobile wallet adoption continues to grow, 94% of business payments remain undigitized, leaving businesses exposed to risk and inefficiency. Swypex is addressing these challenges with local-first solutions that meet global fintech standards. The Approval-Based Limits Card is part of Swypex Premium, which helps businesses unlock their full potential with the most comprehensive financial management platform in the market. The subscription also includes unlimited cashback, dynamic spend controls, and custom approval workflows. 'We build products that specifically cater to the needs of the local market while pushing boundaries and spearheading innovation in the region,' said Tarek Mokhtar, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer. 'From fast-growing SMEs to complex enterprises, Egyptian businesses need financial infrastructure that's powerful, simple, and scalable. That's why we designed Swypex Premium as more than just a tool, but rather a comprehensive financial operating system. With advanced spend controls and approval workflows developed to integrate with existing financial processes, we're not just digitising finance; we're fundamentally reshaping how it works in Egypt's evolving economic landscape,' he added. Backed by a $4 million seed round led by Accel, the VC firm's first fintech investment in MENA, and licensed by the Central Bank of Egypt, Swypex is setting a new benchmark for how businesses handle finance. Its all-in-one platform consolidates payments, invoice management, smart corporate cards, and financial workflows into a unified, intuitive system designed to scale with growing companies. PM: Egypt-Serbia talks focused on enhancing economic, trade cooperation
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly welcomed his Serbian counterpart Djuro Macut on his first official visit to Egypt, saying the visit is highly appreciated by Egypt and marks a milestone in the long-standing and growing relationship between the two countries. Madbouly said that this visit constitutes the Serbian premier's first official foreign trip since taking office, underscoring the high importance Egypt attaches to it as a significant step in the ties between the two countries. Madbouly made these remarks during a joint press conference with his Serbian counterpart on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the government premises in the New Administrative Capital, in the presence of several ministers from both sides. Madbouly said that a constructive bilateral session had been convened in a spirit of mutual understanding and openness, during which an array of high-priority matters pertaining to bilateral cooperation, as well as prevailing regional challenges, were thoroughly addressed. He noted that the discussions had primarily centered on enhancing economic and trade relations, particularly in light of the Free Trade Agreement signed during the Serbian president's visit to Cairo in July 2024, and subsequently ratified by the parliaments of the two countries. Madbouly expressed his hope that the agreement's entry into force would help stimulate further growth in trade and industrial cooperation between the two countries. He also underscored the significance of convening the Egyptian-Serbian Business Forum, describing it as a valuable platform to encourage both countries' business communities to expand collaboration across diverse sectors. Madbouly noted that the talks also addressed cooperation in the fields of agriculture and food security, particularly in light of the ongoing global challenges facing this sector. He stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral exports in this vital domain, highlighting Serbia's considerable potential in agricultural production and agri-industrial processing. He added that the ministers of agriculture from both sides have been instructed to accord this file particular attention and to actively pursue areas of mutual benefit. He further noted that the joint business forum would serve as a platform to explore a wide range of investment opportunities Egypt offers, particularly within the Suez Canal Economic Zone and in the fields of new and renewable energy, including green hydrogen, as well as an array of incentives available to attract Serbian companies to invest in Egypt. Madbouly said Egypt and Serbia agreed to boost tourism and cultural cooperation, including expanding flights via Air Serbia, EgyptAir, and Air Cairo, following a recent visit by Egypt's tourism minister to Belgrade. Speaking after extended talks with his Serbian counterpart, Madbouly reiterated both countries' support for peaceful solutions in the Middle East, respect for sovereignty, and an immediate ceasefire in ongoing regional conflicts. He warned that further escalation risks broader violence and regional collapse. Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt's position on the Palestinian issue, calling for a two-state solution based on the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital. He praised Serbia's recent UN vote supporting full Palestinian membership. Talks also touched on developments in the Western Balkans, with Egypt expressing full support for Serbia's territorial integrity and its participation in the Open Balkan initiative. Both sides agreed to continue coordination in international forums, with Madbouly thanking Serbia for backing Egypt's candidate for the post of UNESCO director-general.
