‘Crying Nazi' who became infamous after Unite the Right rally is back in legal hot water with strangulation charge
The white supremacist and convicted extortionist known as the ' Crying Nazi ' is back in hot water with law enforcement after being hit last weekend with criminal charges stemming from an incident at the Manchester, New Hampshire, rooming house where he has lived since his December 2022 release from federal prison.
Christopher Cantwell was arrested shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday on one count of felony strangulation, as well as simple assault and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.
Cantwell, 44, became notorious as one of the most visible participants in 2017's infamous Unite the Right rally, during which a group of marchers paraded through the University of Virginia's Charlottesville campus brandishing tiki torches while chanting, among other things, 'Jews will not replace us.' After the angry mob drew universal condemnation for its actions, during which non-violent counterprotester Heather Heyer was killed when a Unite the Right attendee intentionally drove his car over her, then-President Donald Trump further inflamed tensions by claiming there had been ' very fine people on both sides.'
On Tuesday, Cantwell told The Independent what led to his latest arrest, insisting the accusations were 'complete BS.'
'I didn't strangle anyone,' he argued. 'People who are trying to cause legal problems for other people know that they can escalate a misdemeanor to a felony by saying strangulation occurred.'
Cantwell laid the blame on a local man who entered his room, allegedly without permission, and also claimed he was the target of a previous break-in just over a week ago.
'This is New Hampshire, not North Korea, and I have every right to physically remove someone from my home when they refuse to leave upon being ordered to do so,' Cantwell went on. He said the person 'refused multiple verbal commands to leave while raising his voice to disturb neighbors and escalate the conflict. I used the absolute minimum amount of force that I could to remove a trespasser who physically resisted my attempts to remove him.'
The strangulation charge, which carries up to seven years behind bars, is defined under New Hampshire state law as 'the application of pressure to another person's throat or neck, or the blocking of the person's nose or mouth, that causes the person to experience impeded breathing or blood circulation or a change in voice.'
News of Cantwell's latest arrest was first revealed by Charlottesville-based journalist Molly Conger, host of the podcast Weird Little Guys, which exposes the activities of right-wing extremists.
Emily Gorcenski, a data scientist and antifascist researcher who was brutally attacked by Unite the Right attendees while covering the rally, began tracking Cantwell and other members of white supremacist groups in 2018. Although she said she 'cannot speak to the particulars' of Cantwell's latest run-in with the law, Gorcenski described him on Tuesday as having 'a history of violence.'
'But more than that, he has a history of trying to play the victim when being caught in his violent acts,' Gorcenski told The Independent. 'He did this when he was convicted in federal charges for extortion, he did this when he was sued for participating in a violent conspiracy against civil rights in Charlottesville, and he did this when I swore a complaint against him for violently assaulting me with pepper spray at the University of Virginia.'
From Cantwell's perspective, Gorcenski went on, 'his frequent violence is always just and his victims are always liars.'
'Unfortunately for him, there is rarely much overlap between Chris's world and the real world,' she said. 'I hope one day he learns to take accountability for his actions.'
Cantwell is a New York native who grew up in an affluent suburb on Long Island. He told the Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch investigative unit that his father was one of 11,000 air traffic controllers fired in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan after refusing a back-to-work order amid a nationwide strike for better pay and increased benefits.
He has agitated for the violent overthrow of the U.S. government, for Democrats and 'communists' to be 'physically removed' from the country, and for white men to take multiple wives in an effort to produce more Caucasian babies.
Due to his federal conviction, Cantwell cannot presently vote, but has been vocal about the fact that he voted for 'God Emperor' Donald Trump in 2016.
'Do I have a capacity for violence? You f*****g bet I do,' Cantwell told Hatewatch prior to his 41-month federal prison sentence, which was handed down in September 2021. 'I carry two pistols, and I've been in multiple different types of combat training. I can f*****g harm a man, and I'll put an end to a life if I have to, but I don't particularly want to. I've been involved with enough violence to know that it can go very bad, and I take prudent measures to avoid getting myself into violent conflict.'
Cantwell earned the 'Crying Nazi' nickname after posting a video of himself in tears following the Unite the Right march, upon learning there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Jared Leto is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from several women, including some who were teens at the time. The Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman has been accused of inappropriate behaviour by nine women over a period of two decades. These claims involve alleged victims who say they were teenagers when the incidents occurred. According to an exposé published by Air Mail, the matter has 'been an open secret for a long time.' Representatives for the 53-year-old House of Gucci star have denied all the accusations to the publication. The claims against Leto resurfaced after a Los Angeles-based DJ, Allie Teilz, re-shared a post on Facebook from 2012 to her Instagram Story. In it, the 30-year-old alleged she was assaulted by the star when she was 17. She alleges that Leto 'knew' how old she was but 'didn't care'. 'You're not really in LA until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… in a kilt… And a snow hat,' she wrote. 'I was assaulted and traumatized by this creep when I was 17.' Teilz also described Leto's actions as 'predatory, terrifying and unacceptable.' An unnamed alleged second victim also told Air Mail that she was 16 when Leto briefly spoke with her at Urth Caffé in LA. Taking place in 2006, she alleges he got her phone number and called her days later. During the call, she says he sounded 'weird'. 'I don't know if he was on drugs or what… it was the weirdest, grossest voice… [but] for me, it's Jared, you know?' Claiming they would speak on the phone late at night, she says their conversations became 'sexual', with Leto asking if she'd 'ever had a boyfriend' and questions such as, 'Have you ever sucked a d**k?' A third accuser, Laura La Rue, 33, says she met Leto in 2008 at an animal rights event. At the time, he was 36 and she was 16. She says Leto asked what her age was, to which she responded. Despite knowing she was 16, she claims Leto still asked for her phone number, later inviting her over to his home in LA. There, he allegedly 'flirted' with and 'teased' her the 'whole time'. The model also claims that Leto was fully naked at one point and walked into the room as if it were 'normal'. 'I thought maybe this was just what adult men do.' A fourth woman, also anonymous, has said Leto approached her at an 18+ club when she was 20, where his assistant asked for her number. She said they 'hook[ed] up a little' at the nightclub and she visited his home several times afterwards. Echoing the second victim's descriptions, she also said Leto was 'weird'. 'I know some people are kinky, and that's fine,' she reasoned, but said 'his kind of kink … just didn't feel right.' Furthermore, a fifth alleged victim has said she and Leto exchanged flirtatious messages while she was underage. She allegedly also visited his home, where he would ask her questions of a sexual nature, including, 'Do any of the little boys you hang out with f**k you?' After she turned 18, their relationship was allegedly taken to another level. At one point, Leto is said to have 'pulled his penis out and started masturbating'. She says he put her hand on his penis and told her: 'I want you to spit on it.' In the original Air Mail piece, it is claimed that Leto was 'known' for taking an interest in younger women. One woman told the outlet: 'I remember being so physically ill to the point of throwing up when I passed billboards … for his films, and just wondering how everybody in LA knows.' A rep for Leto said to Air Mail: 'Their (the women's) communications contain nothing sexual or inappropriate and Ms. La Rue later applied to work as Mr. Leto's personal assistant, further underscoring the absence of anything inappropriate in any of their interactions.' La Rue denies ever applying to be Leto's PA. The actor's publicist also defends that he 'has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years', following claims that he hosted parties at his mansion attended by approximately 60 'very young women to four or five men'. It's claimed guests were encouraged to go skinny dipping at the events. Leto, now an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, first achieved recognition in 1994 for his role as Jordan Catalano in the teen drama television series My So-Called Life. He went on to have supporting roles in Fight Club (1999), Girl, Interrupted (1999), and American Psycho (2000), before turning his focus to music. Final tragic moments of dad and daughter found dead on mountain hike
Three days after Tim Keiderling, 58, and Esther Keiderling, 28, were last seen alive their bodies were recovered from Mount Katahdin after they set out to reach the summit A family has been torn apart after a dad and his daughter never returned from a hike last weekend. On Sunday June 1 Tim Keiderling, 58, and Esther Keiderling, 28, were last seen at around 10.15am local time. They had set out from the Abol Campground to hike Mount Katahdin and were last seen heading towards the summit. The Baxter State Park website describes the Katahdin trail the pair took as a 'very strenuous climb" adding that it can take an average of eight to 12 hours to hike round-trip. When Baxter State Park Rangers noticed that the Keiderlings vehicle was still in the day-use car park hours later a search was launched to locate them. Baxter Park Rangers actively searched the Abol Trail the Hunt Trail, including the Katahdin Tablelands, and found no sign of the father and daughter, both of Ulster Park, N.Y. Baxter State Park Rangers expanded their search on Katahdin on June 3, assisted by over 30 game wardens including the Maine Warden Service Search and Rescue team and the Maine Warden Service K9 team. From the skies helicopters from the Maine Forest Service, the Maine Army National Guard and a Lakota Helicopter outfitted with an infrared thermal imaging device also assisted wth the search. Days later, on Tuesday, June 3, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife updated a statement, writing that a Maine Warden Service K9 search team found Tim's body near the summit of the mountain, but his daughter remained missing. The organization updated the statement again the following day on Wednesday, June 4, announcing that searchers had found Esther's body. In a statement shared via the family's New York-based church, Tim's brother-in-law, Heinrich Arnold, has spoken out about the tragedy. He thanked community members for their 'outpouring of prayers and support" after the "heartbreaking tragedy." Explaining that Tim, a father of six, and Esther's deaths have been "difficult to fully grasp," he continued, "Both were taken from us far too soon, and we are all left asking: 'Why?'" reports PEOPLE. He added: "One comfort to the family is knowing that Tim and Esther were doing something they both were passionate about: being near to God, surrounded by expansive views and visions, immersed in nature, in the raw and wild beauty of creation. The last few days have been filled with endless hours of heartache and prayer as we prayed for God's protection and his comfort in this loss." Joe Keiderling, Tim's brother, told NBC News that his sibling was "utterly unique." The pair both worked for the medical supply company Rifton Equipment. Joe added: "Many young men and women remember him as an elementary school teacher who could hold them spellbound with wildly imaginative stories and escapades in the woods and fields of the Hudson Valley he called home." Of Esther, Joe said his niece was quiet but "deeply sensitive," telling NBC News, "She loved reading and writing, with a particular fondness for the poets Gerard Manley Hopkins and Edna St. Vincent Millay."
