This Tequila Is So Exclusive You Have To Apply To Drink It

Yahoo3 days ago
You can drink it neat or use it to make a margarita (Jennifer Aniston's favorite cocktail). You can buy it from Jose Cuervo, Tres Agaves, or one of the many brands owned by celebrities. It's a drink so fun that they named a bopping surf rock instrumental after it and had Pee Wee Herman dance to it. Tequila is a delightful, versatile, frequently misunderstood spirit, and one that has been historically pretty easy to get one's hands on. But there's a new, hyper-luxurious brand of tequila coming out — one that's so exclusive you have to fill out an application to even be considered to taste it.
It's called Tequila Purísima, and it's the brainchild of Brent Hocking, an entrepreneur who has become a big name in the high-end liquor market. (He's a frequent collaborator with Drake, which honestly explains a lot about this whole situation.) Tequila Purísima sells itself as the best of the best, made in small batches with very high-quality ingredients; the whole bit with the application, then, is a way to reinforce the tequila's rarity. Hocking specifically contrasts this quality-first approach with the myriad of celebrity-endorsed tequilas that have saturated the market, which we guess is a noble enough aim. Still, the brand's landing page, with its tagline "for those who know better" and its button asking you to "request consideration", is a little much. At least George Clooney didn't ask us to prove our worth before he deigned to sell us hooch, y'know?

Tequila Purísima Is A Seriously Fancy Tequila
It is, admittedly, quite easy to make fun of a tequila presented with such self-important gravitas, especially when it comes in a bottle with such a...erm, suggestive shape. (We freely admit to not knowing the best practices when it comes to shaping tequila bottles, but none of the other ones we've seen are shaped like something you'd buy at a Spencer's in the mall.) But just because tequila is a relatively inexpensive liquor to produce doesn't mean it's okay to put aside quality altogether, which plenty of celebrity-endorsed liquors, tequila or otherwise, have done far too often.
Hocking's product is made in a single distillery in Mexico from agave plants with an exceptionally high sugar count, and the cooking process takes three days. You certainly can't say that care wasn't taken to provide a quality product — but you certainly can't say it's cheap, either. A single bottle of Tequila Purisima blanco costs $400, which is very expensive for tequila. (For context, Hocking's previous excursion into tequila blanco was sold for $150 a bottle, which was itself considered an eye-popping figure at the time.) It's entirely possible that the product is worth the price, but us hoi polloi probably won't be able to find out.

Magic Moments maker ties up with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to launch premium tequila

By Chandini Monnappa and Hritam Mukherjee (Reuters) -Radico Khaitan, the maker of "Magic Moments" vodka, will invest up to $4.56 million and team up with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath to launch a premium tequila brand, marking its foray into the category. The Indian liquor maker, known for premium offerings such as Rampur Indian Single Malt and Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, will roll out the brand D'YAVOL Añejo — a premium spirit made from agave and aged about two years in wine casks. D'YAVOL, a luxury brand founded in 2022 by Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, along with Leti Blagoeva and Bunty Singh, is headquartered in Amsterdam and offers vodka, blended malt Scotch whisky and premium streetwear. D'YAVOL Añejo is set to launch by December and depending on state excise duty, will be priced between 20,000 rupees ($228.21) and 30,000 rupees, Radico Khaitan Managing Director Abhishek Khaitan told Reuters on Tuesday. The launch comes as affluent Indians increasingly splurge on everything from luxury dining to premium alcohol, housing and cars. Alcohol sales in the country, according to data from analytics firm Crisil, are projected to grow as much as 10% to $61.35 billion in fiscal 2026. Tequila is one of the fastest growing segments globally and India is catching on very fast. The market size in the country is about 300,000 cases, out of which 15% is the Añejo (Spanish word meaning 'aged') category, Khaitan said. "We believe that in the next five years, tequila can reach a volume of about a million cases in India plus global market, so I think it was a great opportunity," he said. Under the partnership, Radico Khaitan and Shah Rukh Khan's family will each hold a 47.5% stake in the venture, while Kamath will own 5%. The deal also underscores the fierce competition in mass and premium liquor segments. Just three weeks ago, peer Tilaknagar Industries bought the "Imperial Blue" whisky brand from Pernod Ricard for $486 million. Put a Tomato in Your Martini

The tomato's limited yet lush seasonal run never lacks in possibility. But once you've had a respectable number of ripe, peak season tomatoes layered on toast, with noodles or in salads, grab the cocktail shaker and head to the bar. 'When tomatoes really shine, that's when you want to add them to a cocktail,' said Shannon Ponche, a bartender at I Sodi in New York City. 'If you want to eat it, then that's when it should go into your drink.' Recipe: Green Tomato Martini A fine way to start incorporating the tomato's vegetal flavor into your next drink is by making sweet-savory, lightly acidic tomato water. Set a cheesecloth-lined strainer over a bowl, add blended tomatoes and salt, and use the liquid that falls through in your next cocktail. The process takes little effort but, like a good cold brew or iced tea, it requires a slow, unhurried drip for the best results. (For the impatient, you should have enough for at least one cocktail after 20 to 30 minutes.) Then, add it to a martini. By making a batch of tomato water with green heirlooms, the green tomato martini takes on a pale green hue. Combined with gin, dry and blanc vermouth, the drink pairs the distinct booziness of a traditional martini with a romp through the garden. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Leonardo DiCaprio suffers embarrassment as he's stopped and searched by police who don't recognize him

Leonardo DiCaprio ditched his usual face covering while partying in Ibiza, but he still wasn't recognized by police. The 50-year-old actor and his friends were seen being held up by cops before entering a tequila party in a video obtained by the Daily Mail. DiCaprio, wearing an all-black outfit with his signature baseball cap and a chain, looked at his phone as he waited for his turn to be searched. A woman in the background could be heard saying, ''They are searching me full-on right now.' It's unknown if the woman speaking is DiCaprio's girlfriend, 27-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti, who was with him in Ibiza. However, an insider exclusively told Page Six that the A-lister wasn't singled out by police. 'Every single person was patted down, and ID'd,' the source said, adding that there were many notable people at the party. The Spanish cops just didn't initially recognize DiCaprio. 'It's funny, they did a double take and then he went in!' the source continued. Travis Scott was denied entry into the exclusive party held at a private villa by Patron and Spanish actor and singer Aron Piper, the Daily Mail reports, but other celebs that made it in included Kendall Jenner and DiCaprio's best friend Tobey Maguire. DiCaprio is a fixture in Ibiza and has vacationed in the country multiple times over the years. Earlier this month, he and Ceretti were photographed going on Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's mega yacht on the Spanish island. The couple also attended Bezos and Sánchez's wedding in Venice, Italy, in June. Ceretti revealed she had a wardrobe malfunction during the festivities, tearing her vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress. DiCaprio has been linked to the Italian-born model since summer 2023. But she's said that she doesn't like being known as the 'Titanic' star's girlfriend. 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone who has a larger following than you, you become 'girlfriend of' — or 'boyfriend of,' for that matter,' she told Vogue France in March. 'And that can be extremely annoying.' 'Suddenly, people are talking about you as so-and-so's girlfriend who was so-and-so's ex,' she continued. 'So it's not nice to think that you can't love whoever you want, because of the labels people need to stick on you.' Solve the daily Crossword
