Nintendo Switch 2 beats PS4 and PS5 as fastest-selling console ever

Nintendo Switch 2 beats PS4 and PS5 as fastest-selling console ever

Metro5 days ago
The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to break records around the world, as Xbox's Forza Horizon 5 makes a big splash on PS5.
We already knew the Nintendo Switch 2 was the fastest-selling console ever worldwide, with 3.5 million units sold within its first four days, but we now have a better picture of its success in the US.
According to Circana's Mat Piscatella, an analyst specialising in US video game sales, the Switch 2 debuted as the fastest-selling games hardwre in US history, leading to record high consumer spending for the month of June, across video game hardware and accessories.
The Switch 2 sold 1.6 million units in June, following its launch on June 5, which is the highest launch month unit sales for a piece of video game hardware ever in the US. Despite the fact that June is usually a very quiet month for video game sales and a very unusual time to launch a new console.
According to Piscatella, the record was previously held by Sony's PlayStation 4, which sold 1.1 million units when it launched in November 2013. However, the PlayStation 5 was reported to have beaten this figure when it launched in 2020, selling between 1.1 million and 1.3 million units, but either way, Sony has been knocked down a peg.
Although, that's rookie numbers compared to Japan, where the Switch 2 outsold the Switch 1 by 300% and achieved the same record as in the US, of becoming the fastest-selling console ever, by beating the PlayStation 2.
Unsurprisingly, the Switch 2 was the best-selling video game hardware in both units and dollar sales, in June in the US, but the PlayStation 5 is still the best-selling console of the year so far, across both measures.

As for the June game charts, Elden Ring Nightreign maintained the top spot for a second month. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach was the highest new entry at number two, while Mario Kart World debuted at number three.
It's worth noting that the latter is only physical sales and doesn't include digital sales or hardware bundles – so it is certainly number one in reality.
Another notable point is the success of Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation 5, which is placed sixth behind Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Stellar Blade on the US sales chart (the latter received a bump following its PC launch). More Trending
According to the Alinea Insight newsletter, which has tracked total sales between January 1 and July 21, 2025, Xbox title Forza Horizon 5 has surpassed three million copies sold on PlayStation 5 in less than three months, after its release in April.
Within 25 days of its launch on PlayStation 5, Forza Horizon 5 sold a massive two million copies on the console. For comparison, it took Astro Bot roughly three months to hit the same figure, while Death Stranding 2 sold one million copies within 25 days.
By crossing the three million mark, Forza Horizon 5 has surpassed Monster Hunter Wilds (2.9 million) as the best-selling new game on PlayStation 5 in 2025, which will probably come as a surprise to both Sony and Microsoft, especially as it originally came out nearly four years ago.
This will likely only reinforce Microsoft's push to multiplatform releases, with Gears Of War: Reloaded set to launch August 26 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 is also set to hit Sony's console on August 12, with rumours of Starfield and Halo jumping ship next.

Remembering classic games: Rogue Trip Vacation 2012 (1998) Less 'Crazy Taxi' and more Certifiably Insane Taxi... Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. If you're looking at this PlayStation-exclusive arena-based vehicular combat game and wondering why the title above doesn't have the words 'Twisted' and 'Metal' in there, then you've got a good eye. After a messy contract dispute with Sony, Twisted Metal developer Singletrac left to create this spiritual sequel. And the spirit in question appears to have been an unlicensed blend of moonshine, gunpowder and gasoline. Set in a post-apocalyptic 2012, Rogue Trip turned a series of US locations into warzones as you tore around the place unloading a barrage of explosives at your opponents. Predictably, it played a lot like Twisted Metal, only with tighter, less drifty handling which made it easier to draw a bead on a rival car. Advertisement - Page continues below As you'd expect, there was a colourful collection of heavily armed vehicles to choose from. The loose connective tissue was a satire of Americana, whether that's a Sunday school bus driven by a scantily clad nun, an alligator wrestler in a modified airboat or a 1967 Chevrolet Bel Air piloted by an overweight Elvis impersonator. The pièce de résistance was a hotdog themed Weinermobile-inspired car called Meat Wagon, driven by a character called Dick Biggs, whose special ability was smashing opponents flat with a gigantic fibreglass sausage. Had he not died some 59 years before the release of this game, Freud would have had an absolute field day. And if you're still wondering about the slightly confusing vacation theming, it's because the Rogue Trip added a unique wrinkle to the gameplay to keep you occupied. In every map there was a tourist who, once collected in your vehicle, could be ferried between photo opportunities to earn you extra cash, but made you the prime target. Video game exclusives are dying as PlayStation plans new Xbox and Switch ports

As rumours claim Gears Of War: E-Day is coming to PS5, and Sony confirms more multiformat releases, the era of video game exclusives appears to be coming to an end. For 40 years the primary selling point for video game consoles has been the exclusive games that they play host to. As Xbox has acknowledged, things changed during the previous generation, when digital downloads began to dominate and switching formats no longer became a trivial matter. Nobody wants to leave behind their library of games on another console and while the PlayStation 4 still had plenty of high-profile exclusives, by the time the PlayStation 5 arrived fans were already locked into the PlayStation ecosystem. Given the increasing cost of making games, exclusives must've begun to seem like an expensive and unnecessary indulgence to Sony execs. But now it seems they're taking things a step further, with plans to release more of their internally developed games on other formats. One of the most frustrating aspects of Sony's change in approach is that they've never explained anything publicly. The above is all speculation and while it's almost certainly accurate, Sony has never acknowledged a change in plans or discussed why they've released so few exclusives in the second half of this generation – or why they're so obsessed with live service titles. That too can easily be guessed at, but it seems their plans are shifting even further, with a recently discovered job ad asking for someone to 'play a critical leadership role in shaping and executing the global commercial strategy for PlayStation Studios software titles across all digital platforms beyond PlayStation hardware, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, Nintendo, and mobile.' As the ad puts it: 'This role is accountable for optimising title profitability, ensuring cross-functional alignment, and leading a high-performing team focused on multiplatform expansion, mid-range commercial planning, and platform partner management.' Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Naturally, no examples are given but while it's still unlikely that recent PlayStation 5 exclusives will appear on other formats, other than the PC, Sony has recently ramped up its multiformat efforts with the release of former PSP exclusive Patapon on Nintendo Switch and the promise of Everybody's Golf to follow. Clearly these are very low-profile franchises, but while they and last year's Lego Horizon Adventures purposefully skipped the Xbox, live service games Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox Series X/S next month. There's no suggestion that this new role will mean God Of War or The Last Of Us turning up on Xbox overnight, or indeed ever, but the older some exclusives get the more likely it becomes, at least on Nintendo formats – which Sony has long insisted are not direct rivals. For now, the newly advertised role is still likely to focus on older games and live service titles but even that would have been unthinkable even just five years ago, at the beginning of the generation. As far as Nintendo is concerned, exclusives are their life blood and it is certainly impossible to imagine any of their games appearing on other formats, but for Sony exclusives are an increasingly minor consideration, that are no longer profitable enough when released on only one format. This is a truth that Xbox has already realised, especially given how poor Xbox Series X/S hardware sales have been compared to the PlayStation 5. More Trending Microsoft hasn't been very open about their plans either, but it already seems clear there's nothing that won't eventually be released on PlayStation 5. So it's no surprise to find that just as the Sony job ad appears there's rumours of Gears Of War: E-Day and State Of Decay 3 also coming to Sony's format. Website MP1st has found résumés and job ads that seem to confirm both games being multiformat, although whether there'd be a short delay after the initial Xbox and PC release, as there was with Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, is unknown. There were many ways to cope with the increasing cost of making triple-A games but, perhaps predictably, Microsoft and Sony have made no attempt to decrease budgets and have instead sought to increase their revenues by increasing the number of places their games can be bought and played. That's not necessarily a bad thing but there's not yet any sign that Sony will start making more exclusives, whether they're multiformat or not. If that had been the case then most fans would likely welcome Sony's new approach with open arms. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. 'Amazing' Sony headphones shoppers are calling 'best ever' cut by 45% to under £100

The Sony ULT WEAR headphones are now £99 on Amazon, down from £179, with deep bass, noise cancelling, and 30-hour battery life Whether commuting, working from home, or winding down with music, a good pair of headphones can transform the experience. With the right combination of sound quality, comfort, and smart features, some models stand out, especially when there's a significant discount involved. Sony's high-performance over-ear headphones have received a major discount, with many reviewers describing them as 'amazing' and even calling them the 'best ever'. The Sony ULT WEAR Over Ear Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones are now available on Amazon for £99, down from their original retail price of £179, a saving of 45%. Finished in black, the headphones offer a premium listening experience packed with features including deep bass, advanced noise cancellation, and up to 30 hours of battery life. The headphones are powered by Sony's Integrated Processor V1 and 40mm driver units, designed to deliver what the company calls 'ULT POWER SOUND'. Users can adjust the bass through a dedicated button, which activates two sound modes: Deep Bass for extra low-end punch and Attack Bass for added energy. The result is a powerful, customisable sound profile particularly suited to bass lovers. Noise cancelling is handled by Sony's adaptive technology, with an ambient sound mode available for those who prefer to stay aware of their surroundings. For calls, the headphones use beam-forming microphones and precise voice pickup technology to ensure clear audio, even in noisy environments. Other features include multi-point Bluetooth pairing, support for Google Assistant and Alexa, and quick charging, with 1.5 hours of playback from just a three-minute top-up. The headphones are compatible with iOS and Android and come with a compact carry case. For those who want alternatives, Sennheiser's ACCENTUM Plus Wireless Headphones are currently £139, down from £199.99, while Soundcore's Space One model is £62.99 and offers adaptive noise cancelling and 40-hour battery life. But if it's Sony's rich bass, smart design, and strong feature set you're after, this deal on the ULT WEAR headphones is hard to ignore. With a current rating of 4.5 stars from more than 1,900 reviews, the Sony ULT WEAR has received widespread praise for its sound quality, comfort, and build. Others praised the headset's premium feel, with one review stating: 'Extremely high value for money. The build quality is absolutely amazing and they come with so many features. Noise cancelling is absolutely fantastic.' However, a few users expressed concerns. One reviewer reported a crack forming on the side of the headphones after six months of regular use, suggesting they may not be the best choice for gym wear. Another wrote: 'Too much bass and not enough soundstage. Good noise cancelling and comfort, but not great for hearing background instruments.' The Sony ULT WEAR is currently available for £99 on Amazon, reduced from £179.
