Google Unveils Stitch, Replacing Galileo AI with Gemini-Powered Design Tool

Arabian Post30-05-2025
Google has officially launched Stitch, a generative AI tool designed to streamline user interface design and frontend development. This new offering replaces the Galileo AI service, which will be discontinued on June 20, 2025. Stitch leverages Google's Gemini 2.5 models to transform text prompts and images into functional UI designs and corresponding code.
Announced at the Google I/O 2025 developer conference, Stitch allows users to input natural language descriptions or image references—such as sketches or wireframes—to generate responsive UI layouts and frontend code. The tool supports customization of themes, color palettes, and user experience requirements, enabling developers to iterate on designs conversationally. Generated assets can be exported directly into applications or design platforms like Figma for further refinement.
Stitch is powered by Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash models. Gemini 2.5 Pro offers enhanced reasoning capabilities through its experimental 'Deep Think' mode, which enables the model to consider multiple hypotheses before responding. This mode has demonstrated strong performance on complex benchmarks, including the 2025 USAMO and LiveCodeBench. Gemini 2.5 Flash, designed for efficiency, has been optimized for speed and low-cost operations, making it suitable for rapid development cycles.

The transition from Galileo AI to Stitch follows Google's acquisition of the AI-driven UI startup Galileo AI. Users of Galileo AI are encouraged to export their data, including designs and chat history, before the service shuts down on June 20, 2025. Imported conversations into Stitch will not retain continuity, necessitating users to adapt to the new platform's interface and capabilities.
Stitch is currently available at no cost to users aged 18 and above in most countries, subject to Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. The tool aims to make app creation more accessible and efficient for both experienced developers and newcomers by bridging the gap between design and development.

Google agrees $36 million fine for anti-competitive deals with Australia telcos

Google agreed on Monday (August 18) to pay a A$55 million ($35.8 million) fine in Australia after the consumer watchdog found it had hurt competition by paying the country's two largest telcos to pre-install its search application on Android phones, excluding rival search engines. The fine extends a bumpy period for the Alphabet-owned GOOGL.O internet giant in Australia, where last week a court mostly ruled against it in a lawsuit brought by Fortnite maker Epic Games accusing Google and Apple AAPL.O of preventing rival application stores in their operating systems. Google's YouTube was also last month added to an Australian ban on social media platforms admitting users aged under 16, reversing an earlier decision to exempt the video-sharing site. On anti-competitive tie-ups with Australian telcos, the country's consumer watchdog on Monday said Google struck deals with Telstra and Optus, under which the tech giant shared with them advertising revenue generated from Google Search on Android devices between late 2019 and early 2021. Google admitted the arrangement had a substantial impact on competition from rival search engines, and has stopped signing similar deals while also agreeing to the fine, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) added. "Today's outcome ... created the potential for millions of Australians to have greater search choice in the future, and for competing search providers to gain meaningful exposure to Australian consumers," ACCC Chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb said. Google and the ACCC have jointly submitted to the Federal Court that Google should pay the A$55 million fine. The court must still decide if the penalty is appropriate, the ACCC said, but the cooperation between the regulator and Google has helped avoid lengthy litigation. A Google spokesperson said the company was pleased to resolve the ACCC's concerns which involved "provisions that haven't been in our commercial agreements for some time". "We are committed to providing Android device makers more flexibility to pre-load browsers and search apps, while preserving the offerings and features that help them innovate, compete with Apple, and keep costs low," the spokesperson added. Google owns Android. A Telstra spokesperson referred Reuters to an earlier statement saying it and Optus, owned by Singapore Telecommunications had fully cooperated with the ACCC and promised not to sign agreements with Google to pre-install its search product since 2024.

'Flight Deals': Google launches new AI-powered search tool for 'best bargains'

On August 14, Google introduced a new AI-powered search tool called 'Flight Deals'. The tech giant said that the tool is "designed for flexible travellers whose number one goal is saving money on their next trip". In a blog post detailing how it works, Google said that users can just describe when, where and how they'd like to travel "as though you're talking to a friend" to uncover top deals. Users can search something like 'week-long trip this winter to a city with great food, nonstop only' to see the "best bargains available" across destinations. The blog post said: "What makes Flight Deals unique is that it uses Google's advanced AI to understand the nuances of what you're looking for and identify matching destinations. Then, it'll tap into real-time Google Flights data to quickly show you relevant, up-to-date options from hundreds of airlines and booking sites." This feature will be rolling out in the coming week in the US, Canada and India. Flight Deals is being launched in beta to gather feedback as of now. The original Google Flights will continue to stay.
