Pedro Martinez says he has family members unaccounted for in Dominican nightclub roof collapse

Yahoo09-04-2025

Dominican-born Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez said Wednesday he has family members unaccounted for who were inside the Santo Domingo nightclub when its roof collapsed.
The 53-year-old Martinez was born in Manoguayabo, about 10 miles west of the Dominican Republic's capital city. At least 124 people were killed and hundreds more injured when the roof collapsed early Tuesday.
'We are all affected,' he said. 'I still have family members who are still in the rubbles and we don't know what happened to them. But we just want to be strong, like we have always been. We're a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time, so I just hope everybody has the same courage.'
Authorities confirmed former major league pitcher Octavio Dotel and former major league utility player Tony Blanco were among the dead. Also killed was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the Monte Cristi province in the country and sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.
The Jet Set club was packed with musicians, professional athletes and government officials when dust began falling from the ceiling and into people's drinks early Tuesday. Minutes later, the entire roof collapsed. Concrete slabs killed some instantly and trapped dozens of others on a dancefloor where hundreds had been dancing to a lively merengue concert.
'It is with a heavy heart that it is my turn to actually send condolences to all our family members and the people here in the United States who have family over there,' Martinez said. 'We're all sad."

Traded away, two former Mets find their way with the Rays

When Rays center fielder Jake Mangum and reliever Eric Orze saw that they'd soon be visiting Citi Field to play the Mets, excitement quickly washed over them. The pair was drafted by the Mets just a year apart and developed together in the minors. Before they could suit up together in the majors, Mangum was traded to the Miami Marlins in December 2022. Advertisement Orze was traded to the Rays two years later, reuniting with Mangum in 2023. Not only are the two back together, but they are also thriving on the field, showing off the potential that the Mets saw in them years ago. Friday's 7-5 Rays win represented Orze's first career win as he struck out two and allowed one hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mangum went 1-4 and brought in two runners in the sixth. His hit started a six-run turnaround for the Rays, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Mangum was drafted by the Mets twice. Once during his junior year in 2018 at Mississippi State and again in his senior season. This series has extra meaning for him. 'When you get drafted by the Mets, you always dream about getting to Citi Field,' Mangum said before Friday's game. 'I made my dream [come true] with the Rays, and getting to take the field of Citi Field is another bucket list thing.' There's no animosity or hard feelings between Mangum and his former club. Coming into this series, he said he wasn't looking at this as a revenge tour. Maybe that's for good reason. Mangum got his shot to play in the majors with the Rays, and he hasn't squandered the opportunity. He is batting .304, which would be good for 14th in the league if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. 'Just a big thank you to the Rays,' Mangum said pregame. 'I always told everybody that when I was in Triple A, I always said, 'Just give me a shot, and I'll give you all I got.'' Mangum was excited about Orze joining the team in the offseason. The two were already close during their time with the Mets. For Orze, joining a team with a familiar face made all the difference in his transition. Having been in the Mets organization since he was drafted in the fifth round in 2020, Orze didn't quite know what he was walking into when it came to being in a different clubhouse with a new group of guys. But between Mangum and others whom he played with in the minors, such as Cole Sulser and Mike Vassil, Orze had a support system in place. Advertisement 'It's a cool part about baseball. It's a small community,' Orze said. 'There's a lot of good people over there that helped me throughout my career already up to this point. It's nice to come back and see everybody.' In 22 games with the Rays, Orze has a 1.32 ERA with 25 strikeouts. He's come a long way from his debut game with the Mets, where he gave up three earned runs without recording an out. After being down 5-1 in the fifth inning, the two former Mets played key roles in the Rays' comeback effort. The game was everything they expected when they first saw the matchup on the schedule. 'What I expected was a loud, crazy environment, and we got that,' Mangum said. 'To stick it out and win the game was really cool.' (Top photo of Mangum: Dustin Satloff / Getty Images)

Pope Leo XIV Spotted Wearing a White Sox Hat at the Vatican

This isn't the hat most people expect a pope to wear. Pope Leo XIV, who is the first American-born pontiff, sported a Chicago White Sox cap while meeting newlywed couples as part of a public appearance at the Vatican on June 11. Advertisement A photo captured the pope with a smile while wearing the hat. The pope, who is from Chicago and was born Robert Prevost, is a White Sox fan. He even attended the first game of the 2005 World Series between the White Sox and Houston Astros, which the White Sox won in four games for their first World Series title in 88 years. Coincidentally, the White Sox played the Astros on June 11, the same day he wore the cap. (Filippo Monteforte / AFP via Getty Images) 'I read something about that,' White Sox manager Will Venable said about the pope wearing the team's hat before they played the Houston Astros on Wednesday, according to 'Yeah, I mean, it's great. I love the support. Need it.' '@Pontifex representing his favorite squad,' the team wrote on X, while sharing the photo. The White Sox, who last month installed a mural in Leo's honor, have embraced the holy support. Advertisement 'He has an open invite to throw out a first pitch,' said Brooks Boyer, executive vice president, chief revenue and marketing officer for the White Sox, according to 'Heck, maybe we'll let him get an at-bat.' The pope wore the cap on a day the White Sox could've used some divine intervention, as the team dropped a 10-2 decision to the Astros, lowering their record to an American League worst 23-45. They are in last place in the American League Central and have the second worst record in all of Major League Baseball, behind only the Colorado Rockies. After he was elected pope last month, reports surfaced that Leo was a fan of the other MLB team in the Windy City, the Chicago Cubs, but his brother set the record straight in an interview with NBC Chicago. Advertisement 'Whoever said Cubs on the radio got it wrong. It's Sox,' he said. At least one White Sox player believes having such a high-profile fan can only mean good things for the team and baseball, in general. 'It's pretty cool,' rookie reliever Grant Taylor said, according to 'Worldwide, baseball is growing a lot more. But in Europe, it's not very big. So if he's over there in the Vatican wearing a White Sox hat, maybe all of them will become White Sox fans. Grow the fanbase a little bit.' This article was originally published on
