'Will decide accordingly': Kerala Catholic body warns BJP that 'friendship' will depend on progress in nuns' case
Addressing reporters here, Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) president, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, said the incident would be a determining factor in the Church's political stance.
"If no justice is done, then what friendship can there be? How can we speak of perfect brotherhood?" the Cardinal asked, expressing displeasure over the denial of bail to the two nuns, who were arrested following complaints made by Bajrang Dal members.
"The nuns are yet to get bail. This will be a criterion. Naturally, we will observe developments and decide accordingly," he said.
Cleemis questioned the "sincerity of outreach efforts" when justice was being denied to the nuns.
"Everyone should act on what they preach and show sincerity. This is what we expect," he said, responding to questions about the BJP's attempts to engage with the Christian community in the state.

'No One's Listening': Kanpur Man Protests By Lying In Water-Filled Pothole, Video Emerges
Last Updated: Amid the situation in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday attacked the BJP government over the worsening flood situation. Heavy rain has caused waterlogging in several regions of Uttar Pradesh, with the water level of the river continuously rising. Videos shared online show flooded areas. Now, a video has emerged from Kanpur that shows a man lying down on road in Kanpur in a large water-filled pothole with a mat and pillow. The man was reportedly protesting against the hazardous condition of a key school route after his daughter slipped and was injured on the damaged road. The man raised the 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' slogan in the video. On being asked why he was protesting, he said that the roads have not been constructed for several months despite complaining about it. 'The road hasn't been built for months. I've spoken to many officials — the councillor, the minister, the MLA, but no one is listening. What do we do?" the man said. 'Children go to school here. My daughter slipped today. Everyone's children walk this road," he added. Meanwhile, amid the situation in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday attacked the BJP government over the worsening flood situation, saying the 'corrupt and failed" regime is more focused on event management than public welfare. In a post on X, the former chief minister said that when the state government can organise 'super VVIP" rallies, why has it failed to carry out relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas? Seventeen districts — Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Banda, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Chandauli, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Etawah and Fatehpur — have been impacted. 'There is a terrifying situation not just in Prayagraj but across the entire state due to floods. People are facing an acute shortage of food and drinking water. Sanitation is in disarray, forcing many to live in inhuman conditions," Yadav said. Children, pregnant women and the elderly are unable to access healthcare due to collapsed medical services, he claimed. 'People are scared of rats, poisonous insects and the risk of electric shocks. Houses are collapsing, (people's) belongings have been washed away, and people have no clothes left to wear," Yadav said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘She will not let attack pass without fitting response': Stalin backs Mamata on ‘Bangladeshi language' row
Amid the ongoing row between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Centre, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and fellow INDIA Bloc leader M K Stalin Monday came out in support West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, stating that the TMC supremo stands as 'a shield' for the language and the people of Bengal. His latest remark is in response to a letter from the Delhi Police in which Bangla is referred to as 'Bangladeshi language'. Speaking out 'in the face of assault on non-Hindi languages', Stalin, in a strongly worded post on X, said: 'Hon'ble @MamataOfficial Didi stands as a shield for the language and people of West Bengal. She will not let this attack pass without a fitting response.' He also said it is a direct insult to the very language in which India's national anthem was written in. 'Such statements are not inadvertent errors or slips. They expose the dark mindset of a regime that consistently undermines diversity and weaponises identity,' the DMK leader added. The Delhi Police, under the Union Home Ministry, has described Bengali as a 'Bangladeshi language.' This is a direct insult to the very language in which our National Anthem was written. Such statements are not inadvertent errors or slips. They expose the dark mindset of a… — (@mkstalin) August 4, 2025 The TMC on Sunday demanded an apology, calling it a deliberate attempt to strip a constitutionally recognised Indian language of its identity. 'Is there no limit to @BJP4India's hatred for Bengalis? After repeatedly harassing and detaining Bengali-speaking workers across BJP-ruled states, @AmitShah's @DelhiPolice has now crossed all lines by officially branding our mother tongue, Bangla, as the 'Bangladeshi language',' the party's post on X read. The BJP at the Centre hit back, accusing the TMC of shielding illegal Bangladeshi settlers. The ongoing row was triggered after CM Mamata, at her recent rallies, highlighted an issue of allegations of harassment faced by migrant workers from Bengal in BJP-ruled states on suspicion of being Bangladeshis. The letter dated July 24, written by Inspector Amit Dutt from Lodhi Colony Police Station to Officer-in-charge of Banga Bhawan, requested for a translator to decipher documents seized from suspected Bangladeshi nationals. It said that police needed an interpreter 'proficient in Bangladeshi national language' to translate documents for a case involving eight persons 'strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India'. 'Upon inquiry, copies of national ID cards, birth certificates, bank account details etc. were found from these suspected Bangladeshi nationals. The suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on the order of the honorable court concerned,' the letter stated. Inspector Dutt, the Investigating Officer, wrote in the letter that the identification documents contain texts written in 'Bangladeshi' and are needed to be translated to Hindi and English. 'Now, for the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator /interpreter proficient in Bangladeshi national language may kindly be provided for the aforesaid purpose,' the letter said. 'Emphasis is laid on the fact that the requisite report would be a pivotal piece of evidence for successful prosecution of suspected Bangladeshi nationals facing trial. Expeditious disposal of this letter is desired as the same is required to be submitted before the honorable court in a timed manner. Any bills raised against the translation service shall be payable by the department and a quotation for the same may be communicated before hand,' Dutt said in the letter. Although senior police officers confirmed that the letter was sent to Banga Bhawan, an official response from Delhi Police is awaited.

BJP's ally IPFT demands SIR in Tripura
The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP in Tripura, has demanded a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the northeastern State on the lines of Bihar, a senior party leader said on Monday (August 4, 2025). The development came days after a delegation of Tipra Motha Party (TMP), another ally of the BJP in Tripura, met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and demanded SIR in the State. "A four-member team, headed by IPFT president Prem Kumar Reang, met the CEC on August 1 in New Delhi and submitted a memorandum before the poll panel backing the demand for SIR in our state," the party's general secretary, Swapan Debbarma, said. "In our memorandum, the party has clearly stated that the ECI will have to ensure that no genuine citizen of the state shall be disenfranchised from the electoral rolls," he said. Mr. Debbarma said the party will organise a massive rally at Swami Vivekananda Ground in Agartala on August 23 to mark 'Sixth Schedule Day'. "The party used to hold a rally in Delhi's Jantar Mantar on the occasion of Sixth Schedule Day, but this time, we will organise the programme at Vivekananda Ground here because the crucial elections of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are due next year," he said. The IPFT, capitalising on its core demand of a separate state of Tipraland comprising the TTAADC areas, had contested the 2018 Assembly election and won 14 ST-reserved seats. The BJP-led coalition unseated the Left Front from power in the state in that election.
