Cape Town City lose R16 million-worth star for free!

Cape Town City are feeling the pain of being relegated from the Betway Premiership to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The Citizens had a chance to save their topflight status via the promotion/relegation playoffs last month.
However, things just didn't go their way as Orbit College secured their place in the 16-team Betway Premiership.
Now, City chairman John Comitis is on record to say going down to the Motsepe Foundation Championship would come with financial losses.
But it doesn't end there as they have already lost some of their top players, including Thamsanqa Mkhize, Darren Keet, Thulani Serero, Fortune Makaringe, Amadou Soukouna, Haashim Domingo, Lorenzo Gordinho, Kamohelo Mokotjo and Nathan Fasika.
Now, on Wednesday, FARPost reported that former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates target Thabo Nodada had left City.
Nodada was the longest-serving member of this City team having relocated with them to Cape Town in 2016.
He stayed loyal to City despite several enticing offers from both Chiefs and Pirates when he was at his peak.
However, that relationship has come to an end, and the 30-year-old midfielder, worth R16 million, is on the market for a new home. Thabo Nodada models the new Cape Town City home kit. Image: @CapeTownCityFC / Twitter
'Thabo Nodada is the latest senior player to leave Cape Town City FC as the club's squad continues to see an exodus following their recent relegation to the second-tier league,' reads part of the report.

Broos names Zwane and Mudau in preliminary squad for WC qualifiers

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named 48 players in his preliminary squad to face Lesotho and Nigeria in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers which will be played at the Free Stadium in September. Included in the squad is Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker Themba Zwane, who got injured in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal second leg against Orlando Pirates last weekend. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso told the media after his club's 2-0 win over Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership played in Polokwane that it might take two months for Zwane to recover. Another surprise in the squad is Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau who is yet to kick the ball this season due to a contractual dispute with his club. But there were many new names in the preliminary squad, including Orlando Pirates young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Thabo Maloisane of Stellenbosch FC, Sipho Mbule of Pirates, Ime Okon of Hanover 98 (Germany), Puso Dithejane of Ts Galaxy and Kamogelo Sebelebele of Pirates. Broos will whittle down his squad to 23 players in the coming weeks before they face Lesotho on September 5 and Nigeria on September 9 [both matches will kick off at 9pm].

Tinkler urges bravery as Sekhukhune chase MTN8 comeback

Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler calls on his players to be brave and focused as they chase an MTN8 semi-final comeback against Stellenbosch. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media Eric Tinkler wore a weary smile at the PSL offices on Thursday during the pre-match press conference ahead of Sekhukhune United's MTN8 semi-final second leg against Stellenbosch. The coach's expression reflected the exhaustion he has endured over the past three weeks due to mounting expectations. Babina Noko assembled a strong squad during pre-season, and there were high hopes for them to build on their fourth-place finish in last season's league campaign. They duly answered the call, beating TS Galaxy in the MTN8 quarter-final and Orlando Pirates in their Betway Premiership opener. 🚨 NEXT MATCH 🚨 We are going into the MTN8 Semi-Final 2nd Leg! 🆚 STELLENBOSCH 🏟 New Peter Mokaba Stadium 📅 Saturday, 23 Aug | 18:00 📺 SuperSport (202) & SABC 2 🎟 R100 | at OpenTickets: Be part of it. Tinkler lamented after that defeat that his troops had not followed instructions — an error they corrected by thrashing Orbit College 3-0 in the league on Wednesday night. Having endured a rollercoaster of results in recent weeks, Tinkler cut a stern and weary figure in Parktown. Despite the deficit and the possibility of missing out on one of their season targets, the ginger-haired coach insists they cannot throw in the towel just yet. 'I try to treat this game as the second half of the tie, and turn it around like we did against TS Galaxy,' Tinkler said, referencing their comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2. 'We obviously have to take more risks in attack, be braver on the ball, and more assertive going forward. But you mustn't be reckless. "You know they are going to hit you on the break and counter-attack. Your work ethic and concentration levels must be high. Most importantly, you need to stay positive, go out there, and try to get that early goal. A 2-1 lead is never a comfortable position.' Tinkler may still be chasing his first Wafa Wafa trophy with Sekhukhune, but he knows what it takes to win the competition, having lifted it with the now-defunct SuperSport United in 2017. He admitted he wants to create another milestone with Babina Noko, especially after the team has grown in leaps and bounds since he took charge earlier this year. 'I think it would be massive to reach a cup final,' Tinkler said. 'That's the target we set at the beginning of the season: to try and go all the way. 'Obviously, the players know the importance of turning the result around. For a club like Sekhukhune, winning a cup would add a piece of history to what the club has already achieved. 'Since I've been here, we've broken a number of records, and hopefully we can continue doing that. That's the objective.' Tinkler may be the chosen leader of Babina Noko, but he knows he needs the buy-in and contribution of everyone — especially the players — to succeed. 'I asked the players, 'What do you want? Do you want a coach-centred team or a player-centred team?'' Tinkler explained. 'I can be a dictator if you want me to be, or I can be a leader if that's what you prefer. So you must choose: dictator or leader. The players chose a leader. 'They've taken that ownership and created a culture within the team. For that reason, we see what we see right now: character, discipline, and unity within the squad.'

Ribeiro wants his contract with Sundowns terminated, sends request to Fifa for intervention

Brazilian striker Lucas Ribeiro has taken his club Mamelodi Sundowns to the Fifa Football Tribunal in his quest to have his contract terminated with the Tshwane giants. The South African Footballer of the Season, who has not played for Sundowns since the 2025-2026 season started, has had offers from the end of last season. He finished as South Africa's top goal scorer and was voted Players' Player of the Season after winning the Betway Premiership with Sundowns for a second time in succession. 'I believe I have just cause to terminate my contract with Mamelodi Sundowns FC, which I will explain before the Fifa Football Tribunal,' Ribeiro was quoted in South African media as saying on Thursday. 'However, in any event, after the Diarra ruling by the Court of Justice of the EU, there is no doubt the dispute between me and my former club will not prevent me from continuing my career with peace of mind: following its own regulations (as amended in light of the Diarra judgment), Fifa will see to it that the international transfer certificate be immediately delivered upon request by my future employer. 'I have received expressions of interest from various clubs, including some in the EU, and I will now consider what is best for the future of my career to make the right choice, the one that will allow me to flourish as a sportsman and try to provide for the future of my family, knowing that a player's career is short and unpredictable,' Ribeiro said.
