Sold-out musical about Luigi Mangione adds new S.F. date
' Luigi: The Musical,' inspired by the social media frenzy surrounding the 27-year-old suspect in the murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has added a July 13 performance at the Independent. The music venue on Divisadaro Street has a capacity of 500, roughly five times that of the Taylor Street Theater, where the show premieres Friday, June 13.
All five of the production's originally announced June performances at the Taylor Street Theater, the former Exit on Taylor in the Tenderloin, sold out more than a month ago.
'Luigi: The Musical' was developed by Nova Bradford, Arielle Johnson, André Margatini and Caleb Zeringue, and is staged in the style of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical 'Chicago.'
The satirical show is set at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center and features Mangione alongside a fictional group of prison mates including Sean 'Diddy' Combs, whose sex trafficking and racketeering trial began last month, and fallen FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.
'Luigi the character, as we've written him, is dead serious about his thoughts and goals,' Johnson previously told the Chronicle. 'There's something campy about the whole 'good guy with a gun' premise.'
As Johnson and his colleagues prepared for the stage production's June 13 premiere, the real Mangione pleaded not guilty to four federal charges against him for the murder of Thompson in December.
He is next set to appear in court June 26. During the appearance, a trial date may be set.
Mangione spent his 27th birthday last month at the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he has been held without bail since Dec. 19. To mark the occasion, he sent a list of 27 things he's grateful for to various people who have been writing him letters while he has been locked up. The list has since gone viral on social media and features entries such as 'memes' and 'Latinas for Mangione,' both nods to the internet discourse around his arrest.
Mangione also revealed that around 30,000 people donated more than $1 million to his legal fund, and expressed gratitude for the various books and letters that he has received.

Nonprofit takes in sheep found wandering Chicago's West Loop
It was sheer madness, or shear madness, in Chicago's West Loop this week — and we don't mean "Shear Madness," the famous whodunit play set in a hair salon. We do mean a sheep — yes, that's right, a sheep — that was spotted running around the West Loop and the Fulton Market area on Monday. The sheep caused quite a commotion for hours, with people following the animal with their phones to see what was going on. Witnesses said the sheep escaped a butcher shop and slaughterhouse on Halsted Street. He clearly had a mission, and he saved his own life in doing so. He was spotted around lunchtime Monday, running all around the West Loop and the Fulton Market District. "I pulled up to the stop sign, and I literally thought I was like tripping or seeing something," said Bobby Grilli. "I could not believe I was looking at a shee p." Grilli saw the sheep on the lam himself before he trotted down Green Street. People following the woolly animal said he got out of the flock of the Halsted Packing House at 445 N. Halsted St. "It was funny, because as we got to Halsted Street, the butcher came running across the street," Grilli said. Butchers were seen in TikTok videos going after the sheep, which they corralled into a parking lot. "The butcher was like hiding behind the car to like sneak up behind it," Grilli said. At one point, the sheep was cornered by Chicago Animal Care and Control — and the fuzzy fugitive was put in the back of their van. But Chicago Animal Care and Control said they do not have the space to house livestock like sheep. So the sheep ended up in the backyard of Chicago Chicken Rescue, a nonprofit in the South Side's Woodlawn neighborhood. Cofounder Christina Zelano said the rescue operation works with Animal Care and Control to take in domestic animals that come into the shelter — and after 15 years, she said this was her first sheep. "He was at a slaughterhouse in Chicago, and managed to escape and find his way to the main administrative office, and then smashed through a glass window and ended up roaming the streets of Chicago," said Zelano. This is why Zelano says the sheep had a slaughterhouse marking on his back. "So we're looking for a home for the sheep, a more permanent home, on a farm that has other sheep," said Zelano. For the next few days to a week, Zelano said Chicago Chicken Rescue will be in the backyard. Dozens of chickens and ducks are on one half of the yard, while the sheep is claiming the other. "I thought, what an impressive animal that he escaped this way to his freedom — and [we] wanted to provide him a chance to live, which is what he wanted," said Zelano. Zelano said she does not think the sheep has been outside. She is not sure of his history, but said he is very scared and standoffish.

Crystal Lake, Illinois neighbors furious after Airbnb guest is caught in lewd act outside
The residents of a quiet neighborhood in Crystal Lake, Illinois northwest of Chicago were subjected to a shocking surprise recently. They said they looked out their window to see the Airbnb guests next door brought more than luggage. A man staying on the property was caught in a lewd act. It has now all raised questions about the actions of short-term guests in residential areas. Lynette McClain said she spotted the man while looking out her kitchen window toward the pool in the yard next door. "I was here, and just directly, like I saw him facing this way, in action — his whole body," said Lynette McClain. McClain had just come to her home on her quiet street in Crystal Lake when something caught her eye out of that kitchen window on a Saturday afternoon. "I just shouted, 'Oh my God, he's naked!'" said McClain. McClain stepped one photo, showing an adult man — not only completely naked, but in the middle of a lewd act on the steps of the pool with his phone in his other hand. McClain said the man moved around the backyard for more than 10 minutes. "It's traumatizing to see something like that, and then my daughter to see something like that," said McClain. "So yeah, it wasn't something I expected to see." McClain's husband is now calling for action. "You know, when you have a child that's seeing things like this, that's the last thing you ever want your child to deal with," said Lynette McClain's husband, Antijuan McClain. "I was very upset. I immediately called the cops." Police came over, investigated, and filed a police report — though no charges were issued. When CBS News Chicago reached out to the City of Crystal Lake, they said it is still an ongoing investigation, and they couldn't say any more. The property owner said the incident "does not follow house rules," and they "have since reported it to Airbnb and they are investigating the incident." Airbnb released a statement reading, "The reported behavior has no place on our platform, and we have suspended the guest's account as we investigate." Meanwhile, the listing photos do show neighboring windows are visible from the backyard where the man was spotted. The McClains say they don't have a problem with the Airbnb next door — they just want to make sure there isn't a next time for what they witnessed. "Laws need to be changed. This is unfortunate something like this happened, or it happens again, and you can't deal with it," said Antijuan McClain. "Who wants to deal with something like this?" As for the apology the man offered to police, in which he claimed he didn't know he could be seen, Lynette McClain is not having it. "I don't believe that — just because you can see that you can see that there's windows here," she said. "I'm sure he looked this way. He was facing directly this way." Airbnb also said it encourages neighbors to use its our Neighborhood Support Line to speak directly to Airbnb with concerns about properties or guest behavior.

Chance the Rapper talks about life after divorce ahead of 'Star Line' release
Chance the Rapper is opening up about co-parenting with his ex-wife as he prepares to release a new album and go on a national tour. The rapper from Chicago stopped by the 'CBS Morning' studio on Monday to discuss the release of his second studio album, 'Star Line.' Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, described the new EP as his 'most expansive work.' 'It covers a lot of different areas in my life,' he said. Chance etched his way into the music world after recording a mixtape during a high school suspension. He self-released "10 Days" in 2012 and began his career as an independent artist, a path that he continues to follow. He followed up his debut LP with "Acid Rap" a year later, and "Coloring Book" in 2016. In 2023, Chance celebrated the 10th anniversary of his second mixtape by performing the entire tape at the Kia Forum. "I wrote [Acid Rap] when I was opening up for artists playing 300-cap rooms. I'm rapping about doing open mics but closing my eyes and seeing arenas. Going back and playing arenas for that project just makes me proud," Chance said in a 2023 interview. Now, the rapper behind tracks like 'Cocoa Butter Kisses' and 'No Problem' said his new album reflects the change his personal life has gone through in the last six years, including his divorce from Kirsten Corley, with whom he shares two children. 'It's always just a good thing to, as an artist … release and to like, you know, just share with the world,' he added. The couple married back in 2019 and announced their separation last year on their Instagram. Corley filed for divorce in December 2024. They continue to raise their two young daughters together. 'You know, family is like one of the biggest things for me, for [Corley], for my kids, for my mom and dad, so I think the most important thing for anybody that's ever navigating [parenting after a divorce] is making sure that you keep an environment for the kids where they understand that [family is] the priority,' Bennett said. His last album, 'The Big Day,' was released in 2019. Chance the Rapper is releasing his follow-up on Friday and will go on tour starting in September, with a stop in L.A. on Oct. 20.
