'We are seeing quick commerce as a good opportunity'

Cycle Pure Agarbathi, the flagship brand of Mysuru-based 77-year-old NR Group, is the biggest player in the incense stick market, which is estimated to be around Rs 8,000-10,000 crore. Its annual revenue, according to Tracxn, stood at Rs 1,150 crore in FY24. In an interaction with Uma Kannan, Cycle Pure Agarbathi MD and Managing Partner NR Group, Arjun Ranga, who is the third-generation entrepreneur, said digital presence is now extremely important and that prayer as an opportunity is bigger in digital and ecommerce. Edited excerpts:
Post-Covid, is there any change in the Agarbatti industry in terms of market and new players?
From about 2019 onwards, there has been a huge influx of new manufacturers, and unorganised players coming to the industry. Especially during Covid, when people were talking about the benefits of using Agarbatti and keeping the fragrance at home. There has been a sudden increase in unbranded players entering the market. There is an oversupply because of that right now. However, the increase in population and consumption have helped the growth. The increase in the number of temples, rising number of pujas and rituals and the increase of religious tourism have also contributed to the growth of the industry. We have also created exotic combinations of fragrances targeting some specific geographical regions, festivals and giving the customers their taste of preference under various brands, which has further helped in boosting the growth.
As an organised sector player, how do you see the proliferation of many unorganised players in the space?
We are the biggest player in the market as an organised brand. In the AC Nielsen's report, the market is estimated to be Rs 8000 crore, which also includes unorganised players. It is estimated that the market is about 60-70% organised and the rest of it is unorganised. In this dynamic, our market share is about 20% of the whole organised share. The Agarabatti industry has made representation to the government about proliferation of unorganised players, and the government has suggested the best way is to go for an Indian standard. We are working with the Bureau of Indian Standards to come up with the Agarbatti standard. We are working closely with BIS to launch it. It should be done in the next three months.
Do you have any plans to increase digital sales?
With increase in information and accessibility for customers, we saw a shift in the consumption pattern of consumers, where unlike the older times the first access point is not the temples. Today for consumers, point of sale becomes a priority. Today, a lot of customer discovery is happening online and digitally through either social media or the portals. Digital presence today is extremely important for customers to understand your product, understand your brand, and tell your brand story. Our discovery process has increased dramatically. If we were 5% on digital 10 years ago, today we are 50% on digital in terms of communication.
Do you think there is a growth opportunity in the e-commerce space?
Agarbatti has typically been a purchase item, when stock is finished. Quick commerce is showing promise, because Agarbatti is an impulse purchase. And the unit packs are small -- Rs 100 a month is enough for you to light Agarbatti for the whole month. We are seeing quick commerce as a good opportunity. E-commerce is the new big thing. Agarbatti is not a category, but a discovery. Services have increased the opportunity for us, and we have got into astro services. That is leading into puja. So, prayer as an opportunity is bigger in digital and e-commerce. I see the next 5 years as a huge opportunity for us as well as the company in that space. We have a brand called astropuja.com, and we see that as a big opportunity going forward.
What is the long-term vision of the group?
We are all a purpose-led brand. We believe in delivering hope. The long-term vision of the company is whenever anybody thinks of prayer or God, we need to be present either as a product or a service within an arm's reach.

Brand Concepts Opens Ujjain-Indore Factory for TH Gear

Brand Concepts Limited, a leading player in India's fashion and lifestyle retail industry, has announced the launch of its new state-of-the-art manufacturing unit in the Ujjain-Indore belt. This facility will focus on producing premium travel gear for Tommy Hilfiger, marking a major step in the company's strategy to strengthen localized manufacturing and deliver world-class products to Indian consumers. The new unit underscores Brand Concepts' mission to reduce dependence on imports, build supply chain resilience, and align with India's goal of becoming a global hub for premium manufacturing. By localizing production, the company enhances operational efficiency, lowers logistics and import-related costs, and offers competitive pricing to consumers. 'Having direct control over the production process allows us to uphold Tommy Hilfiger's globally recognized quality standards across all products manufactured locally,' said Mr. Abhinav Kumar, Co-founder of Brand Concepts Ltd. He added that the savings from logistics and trade expenses are being passed on to consumers, reinforcing the company's consumer-first approach. The initiative also helps diversify manufacturing beyond China, insulating operations from global disruptions and import policy changes. To further strengthen customer trust, the company has introduced extended warranties on its travel gear range. This development reflects Brand Concepts Limited's long-term focus on innovation, quality, and consumer-centric growth, while contributing to India's emergence as a premium and lifestyle manufacturing hub.

First unit was to be commissioned by 2025: 14 yrs on, north India's first N-power plant in Haryana still hanging fire

Fourteen years on, north India's first nuclear power plant, the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP), the foundation stone for which was laid by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, remains hanging fire, even though the initial target to commission the first unit was by 2025. Attributing the delay 'primarily to surprises in the soil conditions encountered during construction,' the Union government says the power plant is now slated for commissioning in 2031-32, that too in phased-manner, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to the nuclear energy sector — increasing the nuclear energy capacity by more than ten-fold by 2047 — in his Independence Day speech. The GHAVP was conceptualised around 2009-10, and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) subsequently identified Gorakhpur village in Haryana's Fatehabad district as a suitable site. Over the next few years, land acquisition, environmental clearances and public consultations were carried out amid some resistance from local farmers. The project formally took off after former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone on January 13, 2014. However, despite the ceremonial launch, actual construction was delayed due to administrative hurdles, compensation disputes, and procedural bottlenecks. Between 2014 and 2021, the project saw limited site development, and the Covid-19 pandemic further stalled progress. Major civil construction finally began in 2022, focusing on Phase I, which included two indigenous 700 MW PHWR reactors. But ground preparation challenges and technical issues pushed the timeline, breaching the initial target of commissioning the first unit by 2025. Officials privy to the development on the site say, 'Units 1 and 2 are expected to become operational by 2031, while Phase II (Units 3 and 4) has been projected for completion by 2032. Despite delays, the construction work has picked up pace, and the NPCIL and the Ministry of Power are now closely monitoring the project. Alongside technical development, environmental and community initiatives have also been introduced, including CSR Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and large-scale tree plantations.' Congress's Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda sought details about this nuclear power project from the government during the ongoing monsoon session of the Lok Sabha. Responding to Hooda's query last week, Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and Prime Minister's Office Dr Jitendra Singh stated, 'The Gorakhpur Nuclear Power Project comprises of two twin units of 700 MW each, viz. GHAVP1&2 (2X700 MW) and GHAVP-3&4 (2X700 MW). The Government accorded administrative approval and financial sanction for the GHAVP-1&2 in February 2014. Presently, GHAVP-1&2 is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2031-32.' Giving details about the progress of the project, Dr Singh added, 'Excavation activities commenced in the year 2018. The site is a soil site with no hard rock. Therefore, technique of excavation and Ground improvement (GI) using compacted soil cement mix was carried out. This was followed by construction of foundation piles and their qualification. However, confirmatory geo technical investigations indicated some localised weak zones in soil strata. In view of this, a consultant of repute was roped in for resolution of the issue, who carried out comprehensive investigations and submitted recommendations for remediation, which is presently under review by the regulatory authority. The above stated process took significant time, leading to delay in start of construction of the Nuclear Island. However, award of work for equipment, major EPC packages and construction of other main plant building progressed.' About the current status of the project, Dr Singh added, 'In order to streamline the project activities, advance procurement of long manufacturing cycle equipment have been initiated. Accordingly major equipment have been ordered, some of which have also been received at site. All major equipment and works packages like Main Plant Civil Works, Nuclear Piping, Turbine Island, IDCT etc., have been awarded and works are in progress. Constant monitoring of progress of project activities at multiple levels, timely identification of constraints & making necessary mid-course corrections, frequent meetings with vendors/contractors and re-sequencing of construction activities to the extent possible, have also been taken. While work is in progress in the peripheral buildings/structures, the construction activities in the main nuclear island would be taken up in full swing once site specific ground improvement activities are concluded and regulatory clearance is obtained. The delay has been primarily due to surprises in the soil conditions encountered during construction.'

IT shares in focus: Infosys, TCS, Coforge rally up to 3%; here's why

Information technology (IT) companies share price today Shares of information technology (IT) companies were in focus with the Nifty IT index surging over 2 per cent, outperforming the market, on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Wednesday's intra-day trade on value buying. Infosys, Coforge and Mphasis rallied 3 per cent each, while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Persistent Systems, LTIMindtree, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and Oracle Financial Services Software gained 2 per cent each. At 12:37 PM; the Nifty IT index was the top gainer among sectoral indices, up 2.3 per cent, as compared to 0.3 per cent rise in the Nifty 50. However, thus far in the calendar year 2025, the Nifty IT index has underperformed the market by falling 18 per cent, as against 5.5 per cent rally in the benchmark index. Brokerages view on IT services sector In the April to June 2025 quarter (Q1FY26), the Indian IT services sector faced a mixed demand environment, with macro uncertainty, geopolitical risks, and delayed client decision-making keeping Tier-1 player's revenue growth tepid at -3.3 per cent to 2.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) on constant currency terms. Four of the five large players posted QoQ revenue declines, and three saw year-on-year (YoY) drop while midcaps like Persistent and Coforge continued to outperform Tier-1 peers. On the margins front, companies managed to maintain stable margins despite weak demand, aided by efficiency gains, wage deferrals, and strong cost controls, though guidance remains cautious. Deal total contract values (TCVs) stayed strong, dominated by cost optimisation and vendor consolidation deals, while discretionary spend continued to remain muted. Notably, attrition rates saw a slight QoQ uptick after several quarters of moderation, suggesting some churn in a still competitive talent market, ICICI Securities said. Moderating inflation expectations, easing labour market situations (including IT Ops /Helpdesk/Software development jobs) and possibly the expectations that companies will absorb tariff-linked cost escalation and improved odds of Fed-rate cuts in September. This could possibly be a catalyst for mean reversal in IT Services' valuation, analysts at JM Financial Institutional Securities said in the IT services sector update. Besides, rising probability of Fed rate cut (likely limited effect of tariff on inflation) implies that market expects companies to absorb most of the tariff increase. That could further squeeze IT Services spend, in the brokerages' view. These pressures, in turn, are driving higher vendor consolidation opportunities – a positive – and margin pressures – a negative. That said, benign valuations and subdued expectations mean these concerns are likely priced in. Fed rate cut could therefore trigger a minor bounce back, analysts said. Stocks with valuation buffers are better placed. The Indian IT sector is poised for modest growth in FY26, driven by stabilisation in key markets like the US and Europe, alongside increasing demands for AI, cloud, and digital transformation services. Despite near-term challenges such as macroeconomic uncertainty, discretionary spending delays, and geopolitical volatility, the sector is expected to benefit from a robust deal pipeline and a shift toward cost optimization and technology modernisation initiatives, according to analysts at Mirae Asset Sharekhan.
