Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min: Sometimes nice guys do finish first

During one of the episodes of the fly-on-the-wall documentary All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur, then-Spurs manager José Mourinho was seen having a half-time rant about his players being 'too nice.'
As this is a family platform, I can't really repeat the whole monologue, but he basically said that the Spurs players needed to be 'bastards' on the field.
Many people in and outside of the Spurs fanbase believe this is why the club never got over the line in a plethora of cup finals over the last decade, including the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool. The club also became a footnote in Leicester City's 5000/1 Premier League title win, eventually finishing third in a two-horse race.
As the saying goes, 'nice guys finish last' — and Tottenham were just the personification of this.
When it comes to nice guys, nobody was nicer than their Korean superstar Son Heung-min, who is one footballer universally liked for his wonderful footballing ability and wholesome demeanour.
But he was part of that group of Spurs players who couldn't get the job done when it mattered. Besides star winger Son, that group featured some of the world's best players, including striker Harry Kane and World Cup-winning French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Both Kane and Lloris left in the same season, leaving Son behind as the last of the Spurs underachievers.
Over the last few years, Son received various offers to leave for big, established Champions League clubs. But he decided to stay at Spurs and was eventually handed the captaincy in Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge of the team.
A lot of people questioned Son's ambitions, saying he had 'retired from winning trophies' by staying at a club where he had not won a single piece of silverware since joining in 2015.
Last year, Son entered his second season under Postecoglou looking like a player in decline. Over the years, he had been one of the Premier League's most feared attackers, combining blistering pace with clinical finishing.
But last season, it looked like he had lost a yard of pace, while his radar was off when attempting some of his trademark curling efforts from the left side.
His form also seemed to mirror that of his team, who — through a horrendous injury crisis — had slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League table. But, bizarrely, they had a surreal Europa League campaign going, in which they fought tooth and nail to stay in the competition.
By some miracle, Spurs managed to make it to the final against Manchester United in Bilbao. After almost 10 years at the club, and many failed attempts at a trophy, Son had another chance to win something with his beloved club.
With his contract soon coming to an end, many believed it would be his last opportunity to earn a winner's medal in Spurs colours — something Kane and Lloris went in search of at other clubs while he stayed.
And, on that fateful night in Spain, Son finally got that monkey off his back, dropping to his knees at the final whistle, the trophy drought washed away by his tears of joy.

Harry Kane scores as Bayern Munich thump Tottenham Hotspur in pre-season friendly
Tottenham Hotspur's Argentinian defender Cristian Romero (L) and Bayern Munich's English forward Harry Kane (C) vie for the ball during a friendly football match between FC Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur in Munich, southern Germany, on August 7, 2025. Piicture: Lukas Barth Tuttas/AFP Harry Kane scored his first goal against his former side as Bayern Munich romped past Tottenham 4-0 at home in a pre-season friendly on Thursday. Kane, who is boyhood club Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer with 280 strikes in 435 matches, put Bayern in the lead after 12 minutes with a composed penalty box finish. The England captain then had a chance to double Bayern's lead two minutes later when Joao Palhinha, who joined Spurs from Bayern on a season-long loan on Sunday, gave away a penalty. Kane however slipped, blasting his shot well over the bar. It was the first time Kane failed to convert a spot kick since his miss in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

Kaizer Chiefs latest: Velebayi, Baartman - where are they?
Kaizer Chiefs will kick off the 2025-26 Betway Premiership season without two of their signings in Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman. And that's because the saga involving the two players and Cape Town Spurs appears to be far from over. As previously reported by The South African, Chiefs did seal the Velebayi deal but later Spurs contested it. Spurs claim that both Velebayi and Baartman belong to them as they have existing contracts to keep them. This despite the fact that Spurs were relegated to the ABC Motsepe League; an amateur league in South African football. Players in the amateur ranks do not have binding contracts with their teams. In fact, their contracts are season-to-season. Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman in action for Cape Town Spurs at the Athlone Stadium. Image: FARPost Now, the latest is that the PSL Resolution Chamber (PSL DRC) is still going through all the evidence presented by all parties. Spurs believe the two players – Velebayi and Baartman – have no leg to stand, and that they should report back to training. However, the two youngsters are training alone, and have not reported for pre-season at Ikamva as the matter is ongoing. Chiefs, on the other hand, are waiting on the sidelines for the final verdict before they can register their men with the PSL. Nonetheless, the wait could be prolonged by the disputes between the parties involved and the PSL DRC taking time to make a ruling. Man Utd agree 85m euro deal to sign Sesko: reports
MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM - Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to 85 million euros ($99 million, £74 million) to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig on Thursday, according to multiple reports in England. The BBC, Athletic and Sky Sports reported United will pay an initial 76.5 million euros for the 22-year-old with a further 8.5 million euros due in add-ons. Newcastle were also interested in signing the Slovenian, possibly to replace wantaway star Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool. However, Sesko has been wooed by the enduring stature of the 20-time English champions despite a lack of European football in the coming season. His arrival will complete an overhaul of the Red Devils' blunt attack. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were signed earlier in the window, taking United's total spend on forwards in recent months to over £200 million. Sesko had also previously been linked with Arsenal after impressing during his two-year spell in Germany, where he scored 39 times in 87 appearances for Leipzig, including 21 last season. Standing 1.95 metres (6ft 4ins) tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. United are banking on Sesko realising his abundant potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League table. Between them, Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo combined for 58 goals last season. The massive outlay on their arrivals needs to bear fruit quickly with United under pressure to meet financial sustainability rules, especially without the revenue of European football this season.
